Noticed a SwiftAir charter at SYR yesterday when I flew in. What is there in Syracuse for such a thing?

That is sad to hear, but it proves that they have been in serious discussion with United. Maybe United is interested, but with the opportunity of this grant, they said "well, let's give it a try." Just because they didn't get it, doesn't mean they aren't still willing to give it a try. It just means greater risk that it won't gain traction, and the flights will be short lived. But with F9 jumping in first, the two airlines might prove demand that neither was confident existed before. Here's hoping!

DL has been doing the same thing from SYR (with the occasional sub on the 717)

Yes, I enjoy seeing it on the ROC webcam! Loving the summer increase in UA mainline to ORD, too. The EWR mainline may stick, as UA is upgauging to deal with EWR's capacity limitations.

Possibly an ACY casino charter. Drum has a 10,000 foot strip and charters, up to 747s, operate into there. Symbol for Drum is GTB.

Yeah, I knew we got 717/MD90s but never saw a DL airbus here!

I too am enjoying the UA mainline increase, not to start up the AB v B debate though :) Where is the webcam?

Here it is! For now, the DL A319 regularly parks at gate B4.

At SYR DL uses either an MD-88 or an A319 during the summer for the MSP flights. Interestingly enough yesterday on theSYR webcams (https://www.syrairport.org/about-us/live-video/) I saw a Frontier A320neo with a rabbit on the tail operating the DEN-SYR-RDU-SYR-DEN route and it looked brand new. BTW the SYR webcams are streaming and there's 3 of them plus you can access them from Youtube.

BNIA / Buffalo up 9.6% or 40,000 passengers in June! My guess is that they hit over 5 million passengers this year.

Heard a rumor in Polish media that LOT may start transatlantic flights BNIA, would be pretty wild considering how many Polish people live across the border in Ontario.

LOT must be angling for better rates from Toronto Pearson

Honestly I'm surprised that low cost European carriers like Norwegian or WOW aren't making inroads into Buffalo as an alternative to YYZ. Sure it is a smaller terminal and would require expansion of its customs facilities to handle regular international traffic, but I would think the already-existing market of Canadian cross-border travelers in addition to US passengers would support one or two flights a week.

The Buffalo area actually had the third largest Polish-American polpulation in the US. The town I grew up in was 40% Polish.

I'm not saying it could never happen, but I think the YYZ market would prefer Hamilton if they need a cheaper alternative. I know some Canadians go to BUF to save money, but those are bonus pax for US carriers. European carriers targeting Toronto probably would see Hamilton as a way to lure Toronto and Western NY to middle ground.

I’m not sure about The Canadian - Polish aviation agreement. Is it frequency limited or is it strictly a matter of cost.

If it’s frequency, that could count Hamilton out.

In any event time will tell.

But generational/heritage links don’t equate to air travel demand. Perhaps a first generation immigrant that still had family to visit in their former country, but not someone whose ancestors emigrated many generations ago. If that was the case Lufthansa would be flying daily to Milwaukee.

Yea I noticed that, growing up first generation in NYC almost all my family friends went yearly, in Buffalo its more of a cultural thing, found many people here are 2nd or 3rd gen. Still would be neat, although impractical for my childhood airline to start flying into the area, but who knows stranger things have happened.

FedEx still seems to operate DC-10's to ROC now and then. I really enjoyed seeing them on my visits home when they were being used regularly.

Got some great pictures considering I was using an iPhone

I didn't realize how many spotters there are in the ROC community, I ran into at least 7+ maybe more who came out just to see the DC-10!

Driving down Scottsville road this evening from work I looked over at the terminal as I always do and noticed something that looked bigger than regional parked at the American gates. Right now I believe the biggest thing in here on AA is the E175's from CLT. I figured it was a A320 or B737 with all the WX tha'ts been happening along the coast, but when I looked on flightaware I couldn't believe it. AA89 SNN to PHL was in ROC. Is this the first time ROC has gotten an international diversion (not including Canada)?

https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAL ... /EINN/KROC sorry cant figure out how to post image. Maybe someone else that knows how can

I worked for Eagle at ROC for around 10 years and never remember ever seeing any airline getting and international diversion. SYR usually gets those due to their runway length. We did work a charter one year for the Wegmans LPGA when the late Danny Wegmans chartered a 757 to take the ladies who played in his tournament to the Womens Britsish Open the week after the Rochester LPGA....never forget that. Loading a 757 to the brim full of golf bags. I think I lost at least 10 lbs that day :)

I don't know if anyone's posted this yet, but in recent days I have been driving around the Amherst/Tonawanda area and have noticed several passenger jets coming in via Runway 16. I have never seen this before, and I am 22 years old and have lived in the area for as long. In fact today I saw TWO planes heading to Runway 16. Why is this the case? I thought 16/32 was only for certain wind patterns?

In other news I see Air Georgian substituted a CRJ100 this morning on AC7282, once again I unfortunately missed that one.

Whoops....sorry. Yes I meant Bob. I used to work those too. It was really neat seeing the 757 parked at B7 all day. Most of those would come from IAD when Wegmans was first opening up stores in that area. The plane would arrive into ROC around 730-800 am and leave around 6-7pm.

Got some nice photos from one of the charters if someone could let me know how to post them on here? I have them in google photos. Thanks!

jworks58--thank you for posting the photos!! It always makes me happy to see a DC-10 at ROC. I have pictures that I posted at Airliners.net's old hosting site, myaviation.net, before the new or last owners let it lapse. After I get home from travel, I'll see if I can post some via Flickr.

Love to see the international diversion! ROC's posted diversion plan says that anything larger than a 757 can't be parked at a gate, and would have to be parked remotely and pax bused in. That's not correct, because I've seen a charter Rich International L-1011 parked at A9 before; it was a charter to LAS. Runway length shouldn't be a factor; an inbound international jumbo has burned off most of its fuel and doesn't need to be fully fueled to hop to JFK, EWR, PHL, etc. 8,000' should be plenty for anything such a diversion should need.

aeroc--post your photos to Flickr, and click on the photo's "share arrow" at lower right, and click on the "BB Code" link to get a URL to put your post. 800 or 1024 pixels horizontal is what I usually use for sharing photos in posting somewhere. That will allow you to share the photos here.

I wanted to bring up an unfortunate experience I had while trying to spot yesterday.

After arriving a fantastic location on the perimeter of ROC, a location I have been going to this summer, a MC Sheriff Deputy arrived, I am not sure if he was just patrolling or if he was called to see what was going on. He first talked to another male located by Fence Gate 19, he then came over to me as an old AE livery E135 was turning on to the runway for takeoff, and said "Hi, I wanted to let you know your not really supposed to be by the fence around the airport" I responded by explaining that I have been going to numerous spots around the airport for well over a year and that I hadn't had an issue (what I should have also brought up was that the sheriff often pass by me on the inside of the fence and that they don't seem to care) however I didn't bring this up. He said "as I told the other gentleman it really depends on whether you get caught or not, they have cameras all around here, and it depends on which they are looking at on a given day, and I know you guys are probably just watching the planes, but if you stay much longer they may call me to come back here and ask you to leave" I left right after my encounter with him.

I was really surprised by this encounter, as I said earlier I have found ROC to be really lenient with spotters. Each time I have been at this location 10+ cars have gone in and out of the gate, I have taken special precautions to ensure I am 20'-30' from the gate to lower suspicions.

That being said I know that some airports are not huge fans of spotters. At my home airport BOS it is very well publicized that the top level of the garage is one of the best spotting locations, however that the state troopers or massport officials will ask you to leave.

I have three questions for you all:

1. What has you experience been like while spotting at ROC?
2. Do you know what ROC's policy is on spotters?
3. I have also been thinking about contacting the airport to see if they would be willing to create a policy to allow spotters or other people to observe planes taking off by the runway, I know some airports have dedicated spotting platforms, I have heard that some even create cutouts in the fence to allow for cameras to fit through. At ORD Spotters have worked with airport authorities and police to create an official group of spotters trained to prevent crime while spotting, they receive special ID's and everything http://ordairportwatch.org/index.html . Other justifications that could be used is that could bring greater community engagement and support for the airport. I am curious what you all think about this idea/ or if anyone would be interested in joining me in an effort to do this? One concern I have depends on how they would react to the idea, if they react negatively it could bring greater scrutiny to spotters at the airport this would certainly be a reason to not move forward with this idea.

Let me know what you think

There's a nice observation area at SYR, between the cargo ramp and main terminal. It has a fairly close "50-yard line" view of 10-28, the primary runway there. They used to provide tower transmissions there via an FM translator, but the last time I was there, it was no longer offered.

SYR also has the 3 streaming webcams which allowed be to get a good look at an AC Express CRJ as it turned into the gate right in front of the middle camera the other day. You can also watch the whole main runway from the other side of airport in the main GA area on the former site of one of the original hangers which was torn down a few years ago.

Because of increased security over the past couple of years, many small to medium sized airports don't have specific areas for spotting especially with main runway views over a fence. Some exceptions to this in New York include; ALB, BGM, and SYR.
BUF has places for spotting around the airport but they don't have one specific area they call observation area.

In my experience, some smaller airports with only 1-4 flights a day (SLK, PBG, and ART) have lead me into the secure area to take pictures right next to the runway. But of course I didn't just show up on the spot, I had to call ahead of time, and explain that I was just taking pictures for fun, 8/10 times that will work.

Never park over by the road off Scottsville Road . The one that opens for the fire fighters to go in & out of . That or the road that leads down to the County Maintenance place.

One of BUF's best viewing areas is from the Thruway, which I have seen almost cause a number of car accidents from gawkers. :o

Your best bet for spotting at ROC is probably still the gravel lot/pull-off at Beahan and Paul Roads near the approach of runway 4.

If you mean the area by the business park...

About a year ago I tried planespotting for the first time ever there, and caught several nice sized planes there. Nobody was around because it was a weekend. I was very nervous for a variety of reasons, one being that it's within the line of sight of the control tower even though it's a "hidden" area.

I saw a NFTA Transit Police car come down the road and I thought they were coming after me, so I just jump back in the car and scroll through my pictures on my DSLR. He drives by, turns around and leaves. I leave shortly thereafter.

Aside from the time the 747 came around New Year's, that was my last time plane spotting.

From the ROC airport twitter

"On September 8, 2018, the ROC Airport will be conducting an FAA required drill to test the Airport Emergency Plan. THE DRILL WILL BE CONDUCTED RAIN OR SHINE and will require the participation of at least 100-150 volunteers. Volunteers will act as victims and or family participants looking for information on family/friends aboard the aircraft being used for the DRILL."

I saw that. They’re doing it again today with a 767. Routing is MEM-ROC-JFK. Hopefully it continues

Heard a rumor in Polish media that LOT may start transatlantic flights BNIA, would be pretty wild considering how many Polish people live across the border in Ontario.

Interesting rumor ....... LOT does have 787s.

i think we are a few years away from actually flights to Europe. Lets say BNIA hits 5 mil passenger count this year .... bigger medium size airports like cleveland barely have any international service, Pitt gives good incentives to airlines, and so on.

My personal favorite is 12 Gates Brewery. Right under the final approach to 23 and departure path of 5. Having beers available is a very nice touch as well!

Thanks Jim I will try that when I get a chance.

On a side note does anyone have any photos or news clips of the Concorde or other charters in ROC for the '95 Ryder Cup? I remember playing golf in Macedon and seeing it fly overhead on its approach to Rochester. I was only 14 at the time and its one of those memories I will never forget!

I remember cars lining Paul Road when it came in (from JFK I think) . I wish I had a picture.
