Rumor: New long haul LOWER cost airline Canada/Australia

Thu Feb 22, 2018 1:59 pm

told it would be flying from Canada to Australia later this year. Rather than a long haul LCC, it would be a lower cost airline, not a low cost. Apparently this means, with cheaper fare, you'll will get checked baggage & some basic meals & drinks with meals & water at other times. Alcohol will not be included, but for sale.

People in same booking will be seated together, in centre of rows. If you want to sit, on outside or up front of economy, extra cost.

Might be a small basic business type of class at front.

Also might be some cheap promo fares, that include nothing except air.

Fares to be 20-40% less than existing legacy carriers.

Minimal call centre staff, as bookings will be preferred online or through a travel agent (who'll book via travel agent only website) not through a GDS.

Apparently, they are trying to direct any enquiries via email.

Anyone out there heard anything more ?

Make sure you buy insurance in case the airline folds. Canada doesn’t have the market for an additional airline if past history is any indicator.

Nah that'd be bad luck as old names rarely succeed the 2nd time around. I'd say call it Canada 4000. :bomb: :rotfl:

Two countries with high taxes and high fares...I doubt this airline will be much cheaper than the competition or even survive very long.

If someone is actually trying this as a startup, I'd say good luck. I don't think the market is that big and ULH flying is pretty challenging to make work economically. If this is just describing Westjet adding service with their new 787s, I'd say that's plausible.

Canada's high taxes are a bit of a myth. I fly between Canada and the US constantly and the American taxes on international flights are considerably higher than Canada's. Canada's high airport landing fees, however, are a very real issue. Mind you, Canadian airports look a lot nicer than American ones.

Maybe one route will be YYC-DEN-AKL-SYD. For all the ski traffic.

Actually this means that the airline "would" have a lower cost base than comparable "legacy" airlines.

Low-Cost Carrier has always referred to the carrier's cost structure and has nothing to do with the fares passengers pay.

Nevermind DEN. YYC-YVR-SYD already covers the ski traffic.

We don't have the kind of long haul oversaturation there is in europe and asia. There isn't any market for a "lower" cost Canada/Australia long haul airline. Its already as low cost as it can be, while still providing a *reasonable* profit to the investors that provide the large amounts of capital ($$$) to buy planes and lease facilities. Flying is expensive when the geography/political situation do not allow for 3rd world flags of convenience. No serious investors are going to be interested in trying to compete against AC in this market.

No longer rumored, and nothing special. Simply a new fare class.

That was my initial thought. They are unveiling a new livery later this week. Heard rumors it might coincide with new routes or new class of service on board.

On domestic routes only. However, there was a time when Tango was domestic only, so...

It makes sense. There is likely good demand there and I can't think of another carrier that would be interested.

ac have a monopoly of YVR/BNE & YVR/MEL & for YVR/SYD they only have to compete with the big red rat.

Not that said it was to be based in YVR. Could be based somewhere else.

Have a look at fares BNE/YVR nonstop in 2nd half of DEC coming back few weeks later. Most dates AUD$2300-$2800 return.

there's a growing glut of relatively new widebodies being parked all over the place. Lease rates must be plummeting. Any smart long haul startup should be able to get a great deal on any number of these aircraft.

How about YYZ-(seasonal DEN stop)-IVC. with narrowbodies based in IVC for Australian connections.

Could pick up a parked A340-500 or I hear EY has 77Ls available

Negative, don't work for any airline, though clearly have a lot more connection/common sense with regards to the industry than you!

WOW AWESOME you've picked 2 weeks out of 52 weeks where fares are very high yielding... what about the rest of the year?

AC only have a monopoly on direct services ex BNE/MEL, there is plenty of competition from one-stop options (NZ, KE, UA, VA etc)... not withstanding that routes like BNE/MEL-YVR are very unlikely to be able to sustain multiple daily nonstop services to Canada.

Whenever any airline has a monopoly or virtual monopoly fares are always higher.

Maybe the new entity will run flat out in peak seasons like whole of DEC & JAN & JUN-AUG & less in off peak seasons.

Or they could be a virtual airline that only operates in peak season.

That would work well.

There seems to be a low of swapping aircraft between Canadian & Eu carriers. Maybe that's what they are doing ? Air Transat do it I believe. When Canadian carriers busy, EU carriers aren't & vice versa.

Source didn't tell me everything, but is definitely in advanced planning stages, with aircraft number & type sorted.

NZ has a good option from OZ, but KE is long, UA & VA mean going thru USA which is not ideal (ie. enter USA, then leave USA, rather than being in transit)
