The 787-10s role in Singapore Airlines

Wed Feb 21, 2018 8:02 am

What are the roles for the 787 in SQ? They already have the A350 to replace their current fleet of A330s as well as their 777-200s. And their order is not small too. Are they gonna be used to open new destinations?

They are betting heavily on the efficiency of the 787-10 ..Word goes that SQ wants to grow at least 20% in the Asian Pacific region..I guess that.s why they placed a big order for the dash 10..It will be a challenge to fill all those seats..First destination is Osaka.

I would also speculate more regional China/Japan destinations with the 787-10 too. Maybe ADL and/or PER as well?

Any chance any of these go to Scoot? I'd imagine a scoot config with near 440 seats would kill it CASM wise for much of Scoots high demand regional routes.

787-10 will be the regional workhorse replacing A333 and some 77E. The A359 replaces the 77E.

I could see the 787-10 replacing a lot of Australian flying 330s and 77E. With the 77W and 380s for the rest. Good regional and mid haul aircraft leaving the 359 to long and thin and 77W and 380 to more sense routes

Are the 773 supposed to be replace by the 787-10 too?

Don't forget the 773. SQ have several which they use on short haul and medium haul (while 77W do long haul). 773 are also prime target. So it's 773, regional 772 (E) and some A333. As I understand it, regular A359 will take over remaining long haul routes flown by 772 (E) and apparently some other sectors currently flown by A333 that don't justify size of 787-10. Don't ask me whether there will be a separate A359 configuration for the regional route. Me thinks, given the 787-10 business config announced so far that the answer is no. So A359 may be aimed at higher yielding markets with lower proportion of economy uplift. We shall see shortly. A359 ULR are essentially a newmarket, replacing what was occupied by the A345. Expect A359 ULR on SFO-SIN too as it will improve payload uplift.

The A350-900 has three roles at Singapore Airlines, the current one flying long haul to smaller destination like Manchester and Dusseldorf. Some planes will have a regional configuration replacing the A330-300 & 777-200. The final role is nonstop to the USA with a plane we have yet to see inside. Expect lots of Business Class and Y+.

The 787 will be an A330 and 777-200 and 777-300 (non-ER) replacement. It'll serve busy regional routes without sufficient premium demand to justify A350s (which will apparently also have a regional configuration but I presume will be more premium than the 787), 777-300ERs/777-9 or A380 service. I think it would also be used into India and less wealthy parts of China?

I don't think it would be used to Australia.. Darwin is too small (although who knows), Adelaide maybe though... I think SQ would want Premium Economy to PER, BNE, SYD and MEL, as well as First to MEL and SYD.

Now that the 78J is certified, when is the first SQ delivery scheduled?

How does it feels like to have your elder brother inducted in the fleet?

Looking forward to this. The 78X is a great choice for intra-Asian flying. Quite the looker, as well.

Oh, after KLIA, BKK, PER. The next route for the 787-10 is possibly CGK, MNL, HKG, PVG, HND, DPS, DEL or SYD.

I don't believe you'll see them anytime soon in SYD and HND. SYD is going all 77W/388 services, while HND is all-359/77W services. For PVG I think the only possibility would be the seasonal SQ832/5 services; all others are going in the 77W/388 direction as well.

Not as a passenger in the back. I much prefer the A330 2-4-2 to 787 3-3-3. I normally fly as a couple, and getting the window/ aisle seat combo on an A330 is a winner. On a 777 3-3-3 we either have to go right to the back (where the plane narrows to have doubles) or grab middle & aisle.

I see 9 abreast on SQ's 78Xs with 32" in Y. As for where I ultimately see it flying---as far west as Dubai and anywhere within Asia to a slot-restricted airport, and maybe even on the SIN-DME-ARN route. Basically, any 777 at SQ that isn't a B77W is as good as gone and being replaced by the 78X.
