Delta Airlines Busiest Routes

Wed Feb 21, 2018 3:41 am

What are the busiest routes, both domestic and international, in Delta’s system, in terms of both load factors and frequencies?

There are probably close to a dozen routes out of ATL that have at least 12 flights at some point in the year. BOS, LGA, DCA, FLL, MCO, DFW, ORD, and LAX come immediately to mind. Of those, I would think MCO has the highest overall capacity.

In international long-haul, my guess is DTW-AMS has the most flights and seats.

Delta flies 9 flights per day (this time of year) from JFK to LAX, mostly using 764’s, 333’s, and 752’s. Lots of capacity, probably not as much as some of the ATL-Florida routes though.

I think MCO-ATL is there buisiest route. MCO has the most passengers of any domestic destination from ATL (Although WN/NK/and F9 also fly it) They have 17 flights per day on that route all on 752s/753s/and A321s and are always full.

The top routes out of ATL, all of which have competition but are generally dominated by DL:

1. MCO - 1.41 m - 17x (752, 753, 321)
2. LGA - 1.20 m - 16x (320, 321, 738)
3. FLL - 1.17 m - 13x (M90, 321, 739, 752)
4. LAX - 1.11 m - 10x (321, 738, 739, 752, 753, 764, 772)
5. TPA - 1.04 m - 14x (M90, 739, 321)

These are Aug 2016 - July 2017 figures (including competitors), against the flights scheduled today by DL. Most Florida flights are operated by some mix of 739/321/752.

I would imagine each of these routes is within DL's top 15, if not top ten, from a volume perspective.

MCO-ATL has an hourly shuttle for almost the entire day. It's insane how much capacity they can throw on this route, but it is an incredible blessing for MCO based DL flyers like me.

ATL-AMS bumped DTW out of that spot a long time ago.

17x ATL to MCO 757,32S
16x ATL to LGA 32S,737
16x BOS to LGA EMJ,717
16x LGA to ATL 32S,737
16x LGA to BOS 717,EMJ
16x MCO to ATL 757,32S
14x ATL to TPA 737,M90,M80
14x TPA to ATL 737,M80,M90
13x ATL to FLL 32S,M90,737

I'd put LAX to ATL pretty high up there in terms of capacity, 777, 757, 767, A330

It’s peak Presidents Day recess. Whole NE is off and in Florida.

Probably not best time to look at FL frequencies as they will be at their
highest now.

To do a better comparison you should take a shoulder month and compare schedules. I imagine MCO for seats, LGA for flights.

Eh, DL is pretty consistent on the trunk routes to FL, and flights today are already 1-2 frequencies lower than Monday (I noticed 16x on TPA-ATL). We won't see sustained peak schedule more weeks. Shoulder might see it drop to 12x, but they tend to tweak equipment more so than frequency on ATL runs. The shoulder is much more apparent on the longer DL flights.

Pretty sure it didn't.

Random search for June 25th:
ATL-AMS 2x A333 1x 77L
DTW-AMS 1x A359 3x A333

And yes, I know KL serves ATL and not DTW. And no, KL has nothing to do with thread. Just be happy there's at least one city where DL has more service to DTW than any other hub, including ATL.

It depends on whether you're including KL metal. On ATL-AMS, DL operates 3x daily and KL is 1x daily. DL is 4x daily on DTW-AMS, which is the highest capacity on DL metal in any long haul market. Including JV partners definitely changes the picture, and with that in mind I'd think JFK-LHR (DL+VS) and JFK-CDG (DL+AF) would be the top two.

Sorry if this is off-topic but why is DTW-AMS such a popular route? I didn't think DTW was a particularly big port of entry. Lots of automotive professionals flying it?

Management of the system. Toss a lot of folks coming in from other parts of the Delta network through Detroit and save your stronger O&D markets for O&D seat sales.

The venture between KLM and Northwest was one of the first successful transoceanic joint ventures. Much of the capacity on that route consists of people who will never leave the airport in either Detroit or Amsterdam. Amsterdam has a ton of connections to Africa, South Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, making it popular for Americans headed back home. And Detroit is a former Northwest hub, so Delta has a lot of capacity on that route. It has actually been dropping as Delta prefers putting some connections through CDG with Air France and on their end prefer putting connections through JFK, Atlanta, and Minneapolis, and smaller hubs closer to O/D destinations like Seattle and SLC.

Not really, back in the day ATL-MCO was all 302 pax L1011 Wide Body aircraft.

The importance of this route goes back to the NW days. DTW was the main Transatlantic hub for NW, and AMS was their hub (JV with KLM) on the other end. I'd venture to guess that JV connecting traffic remains the single most important factor affecting capacity on this route, as AMS is a great place to connect all over Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, and DTW provides connections to large cities all over the U.S. and to numerous small markets in the Midwest. I don't know where DTW ranks among U.S. airports for O&D demand to the Netherlands, but I'd guess that auto industry traffic through AMS is mostly destined for Germany, Italy, India, etc. (although I wouldn't be surprised if some people travelling to the Rhine-Ruhr region of Germany fly into AMS and then drive or take the train). Western Michigan has a lot of people with Dutch heritage, but I highly doubt that's much of a factor in this route.

At the end of the day, I think that if there wasn't a KL hub on the other end, DTW-AMS would be 1x daily.

It'd be twice, while the market isn't as large as DTW-LON or FRA, it still fares pretty high, I think it goes LON, FRA, CDG then AMS, still top 5.

This has generally been my experience as well. RSW is a highly seasonal airport (summer sees a 50% drop off in flights/seats vs 'snowbird season' across airlines). However, RSW-ATL sees minor flight reductions. On Monday 2/26, there are 10 flights, all on 757. In the doldrums of summer, on Monday, August 20, DL still maintains 8 RSW-ATL but normally downgauges equipment (though that is not reflected yet. Currently it is showing 757s and 739s but I expect to see some of those flights move to MD-90s and MD-88s as with past summers).

If RSW, one of the most seasonal (if not the most seasonal) airports in Florida can maintain nearly the same number of ATL flights, I expect more popular airports like MCO and TPA can maintain even more.

Maybe I can't do math but 4x 333(DTW) is less than 2x 333 and 1x 777(ATL)?

According to Seatguru, the A333 has 293 seats, while the 777 has 291 seats.

So technically, DTW has more seats available, but it doesn't mean they are selling at the capacity of ATL.

Hey folks, speaking of Delta, does anyone know why they recently downgaged their daily JFK-GRU service from the A333 to the good old 763?
It's a little odd since were starting the high season in the US and the middle year Brazilian scholar breaks are just around the corner...
Their other frequencies (ATL, MCO and DTW) were unaffected in terms of acft.

Even MSP has 4x AMS flights (3x DL and 1x semi-daily KL) during the Summer. AMS is a connection point. I don't think DTW or MSP have a ton of O&D to Amsterdam. It's all about leveraging KL connectivity to Europe, Africa and Asia.

Granted these are two airports. But Delta runs 7x between MSP and ORD and MDW daily. 14 flights per day between the two cities. I dont know what that represents as passengers as a lot of these. At least into MDW are RJs. I fly into MDW often as we have a branch in Chicago.

MSP-ATL today is 11 flights, all mainline, no RJs. This route varies wildly as to what aircraft they place on a particular flight number.
4/18: A321, 753, 752, MD90, 752, MD90, 752, 739, 753, 752, 752
I'm guessing other hubs to ATL are the same way.

DL JFK-ATL is 9x daily

757-200 x2 (16J, 44Y+, 108 Y)= 168x2=336
A320 x4 (16F, 18Y+, 126 Y)= 156x4= 624
A319 x3: (12F, 18Y+, 102 Y) 132x3= 396

1356 Seats Per Day

This has been going on since NW. However, CDG is becoming increasingly popular for DTW connections because of the Middle East.

ATL-RDU is pretty impressive too

Today as a random date has 13 flights: 11x MD88, 1x B738, 1x B752

108Y 25Y+ 16F x11
108Y 36Y+ 16F x1
150Y 29Y+ 20F x1

that's 1446Y 340Y 212F
or a total daily capacity of 1998 seats!!

Out of those, Amman is the only significant one. Beirut is served via CDG, and so are opportunities for double connect to Yemen and Iraq.

Measured by Seats, ATLMCO is the route where DL has the most capacity at ~2.24M seats annually
Measured by ASMs, it's LAXJFK, at 3.33B ASMs annually

MCO-ATL has an hourly shuttle for almost the entire day. It's insane how much capacity they can throw on this route, but it is an incredible blessing for MCO based DL flyers like me.

Not really, back in the day ATL-MCO was all 302 pax L1011 Wide Body aircraft.

At the same frequency as today?

Yeah, those hoards of vacationers wanting to go to Yemen and Iraq are filling those planes...
They can't wait t get to the beaches there!
You’re really beginning to irritate me, how is this relevant to the VFR that actually travels from there?

I guess I am prone to call out people who make statements they can't substantiate.

What are the VFR numbers? Do you have any?

What does the Middle East have to do with it? Amman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Musqat, Tehran, Abu Dhabi; all destinations served via AMS and not via CDG.

You think that out of all those places "Amman is the only significant one" ?

There are probably close to a dozen routes out of ATL that have at least 12 flights at some point in the year. BOS, LGA, DCA, FLL, MCO, DFW, ORD, and LAX come immediately to mind. Of those, I would think MCO has the highest overall capacity.

In international long-haul, my guess is DTW-AMS has the most flights and seats.

ATL-AMS bumped DTW out of that spot a long time ago.

Actually, if you include JV TATL operations in DL's busiest routes, then it looks like this:

- JFK-LHR 8x daily
- JFK-AMS 5x daily
- JFK-CDG 5x daily
- ATL-AMS 4x daily
- ATL-CDG 4x daily
- DTW-AMS 4x daily
- MSP-AMS 4x daily (upto)
- DTW-CDG 3x daily
- LAX-AMS 3x daily (upto)
- LAX-CDG 3x daily
- LAX-LHR 3x daily

A few months old but helpful, Weekly one way seats, so divide by 14 to get daily seats per direction.

ATL-LGA is pretty high, but how does the whole market look? I assume with JFK and EWR into the mix there surely are more passengers than on the MCO route.

To adapt capacity to demand.
October-March is peak demand from South Hemiphere. Airlines use their largest gauges and increse amount of departures to South America, Australia and South Africa.
During March-October demand is much higher on North America - Europe corridor, so they move the larger gauge from South Hemisphere to Europe.

Actually Amman is the only non-capital in that list. I have no idea why it would be the only significant one or why a connection with Beirut would be more relevant than all the extra destinations AMS offers. Connecting to secondary airports in the Middle East would make a lot more sense via IST or DXB anyway.

It's right that CDG is becoming more important for DTW as it is a former NW hub, and NW partnered with KL and not AF. Just as the opposite happened at ATL where AMS catched up with CDG. But nothing leads me to believe that has anything to do with the Middle East, as that is the one area in the world outside Europe where KL has significantly better coverage than AF.
