Changing their name at this point would just be silly and pointless. They have their brand, it’s well known to Canadians and has a strong reputation. Even with a push into more international markets, the name has little bearing on regular customers - the brand itself well make a name for itself outside Canada.

As for teal, love it or hate it - I can’t see them dropping it. It’s an integral part of their history and brand - from the livery, uniforms and reward program.

And the #1 most important way for me out of the million ways would be dumping that outdated 90s teal paint.

Do you have any evidence of that? I have found the opposite, at least in markets where WJA flies.

Changing their name won't give them recognition outside of Canada either, and it'll confuse a lot of non avgeeks where the brand has been established and recognized.

A Feb 28th unveiling makes sense as that is the airline’s de facto anniversary 3 out of every 4 years.

HUH. Didn’t know WJ was a leap child.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see WestJet incorporate the leaf widget I to the tail. The new logo on the fuselage with the pointy thing on the tail looks strange. Like that proposed AA logo with them flight symbol And the eAAgle.

In order for WestJet to succeed in international markets, they will need to get boots on the ground in these markets ensuring travel agents and booking agencies are aware of Westjet and selling tickets for them. This won’t be as simple as throwing a feel good party at the gate in Beijing.

Most international carriers servicing China (for example) have been doing so for decades, and there is brand recognition there. Most people know ‘Air Canada’ is from Canada, British Airways is from the UK, etc. Ask some random people in China if they know where Westjet is from, and I think you will get some puzzled looks.

I am not saying they should change their name. I’m saying they may have some brand recognition issues as they enter these new markets.

What am I saying? Of course everything Westjet does or touches turns to gold! ;)

Why would you change the name of a successful product? The colours are now recognized by most so why change them. The airline is very successful therefore the terrible teal every talks about cant be that bad.

Something like Westjet-Canada might work, although a mouthful and a bit awkward it achieves both keeping the name and adding Canada for those outside the home market. WestJet by itself outside Canada seems very unlikely get any traction, just too meaningless. It worked somewhat for Wardair in the 70's when Wardair-Canada appeared on their international fleet.

Yep. February 29th, 1996. Probably the world’s only airline that started operations on a leap day.

Call is Canadian Airways or Canadian Air or something "Canadian"...keep it simple.

Most jurisdictions extend trademark protection to similar names in related industries, so I expect AC would still have grounds for an objection, but I'd want to check with a lawyer before I put money on it.

A fair point. Although I’d argue that Canada Airways or Canadian Airways are very different to Air Canada, especially given that a second airline’s options are limited to not using the other two of three main airline naming conventions.

Yeah, but they're pretty close to "Canadian Airlines", which in the absence of confirmation otherwise AC still own.

Alternately they may not care at all, but some vaguely similar examples are Swiss, who bought up the Swissair branding and periodically license very limited use of it to training schools in order to demonstrate it's still in use, and also that railway up in the US north-east that owns and uses the Pan-Am brand.

Looks like WS are going to be less Eurowhite and hopefully we will see a new font with the elimination of the italicized WestJet titles.

The teal looks softer too. Definitely looks promising. I wonder if this will also coincide with the launch of a full-fledged J product, moving Plus to being their Y+.

An update for you.. more is revealed from behind the curtain :D
It appears the engine cowling gains some color as well. The westjet font appears to have changed or updated. There appears to be extra wording right after as well.

Interesting, that does look good. I'm anxiously awaiting to see the unveiling too :) I know the image is purposely blurred but still the tail colors blending with each other looks similar to what TS did with their new livery change. Nice!!!!

TS’s was quite the nod to Qantas and their livery with the same scheme protrusion . Seems to be the trend these days. With a transitionary metallic grey between the body of the aircraft and the tail end.

I’m guessing there is a half maple leaf in a lighter shade of green on the fuselage.. This is going to look sharp.. Also looks like the Canadian flag has been moved up to just in front of the forward doors..

Does anybody have any tangible proof that a airline has financially gained enough after a rebranding to at least cover the costs of the rebranding? Same with a renaming. It just seems like throwing money away for no real gain.

In all fairness (I don’t usually stick up for WS) the ad with the Feb 28 could have been made up for all we know, it was never posted on any of their media pages or anything after taking some time to look for it.

I would have thought it would have been announced today as Westjet did start commercial service on the 29th of February 1996. It is their 22nd birthday today.

One is the fact that no media of any sort were made aware of or invited to an allegedly major overhaul in branding of the hometown airline.

Source = logical thinking...

Since spring is around the corner and no announcement of any kind happened today there’s all evidence you need. Oh and I live in Calgary and there was no event of any kind at HQ...

In retrospect we were massive idiots to think WS would unveil a new livery on the 787 without actually having a 787 to unveil it on. Hindsight is 20/20.

There was a birthday event at HQ for sure today, at which they did whatever an airline feels it necessary to do at a birthday event.
