Future for the Antonov AN-225 Myria?

Wed Feb 14, 2018 5:10 am

Hello! It's been a very long while (1 year and 2 months to be exact) since the Antonov AN-225 has performed a flight. Are there any plans to get this giant six engine monster machine back up in the air, or is it game over for the beast? Thanks for the answers and have an awesome rest of your week!

I wasn't aware that it ceased flights. Do you happen to know why it doesn't fly anymore?

I have no idea lol, that was one of the reasons why I was asking. I noticed that there were alot of old videos and photos of the AN-225 and went to do quick research on where the frame was located and it hasn't moved from that place for a year now. It looks like its at an airport in South America. I'll have to post a link to the thread once I get the aircrafts registration number.

Okay here's where the aircraft is currently located. Not sure why its been in hibernation for a year but it has to be within reason.

This link is from September 2016, from after the sale of the AN225 program to the Chinese. The Chinese hope to have a 2nd AN225 up and flying by 2019: https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news ... gram-china

I doubt the AN225 is currently in Suriname as just one day after its last logged flight it was sighted in Santiago and Iquique, Chile

There are also a few 2017 photos of the AN225 back in Gostomel Ukraine.

The AN225 most likely has not found any customers since 2016 or at the very least Antonov has disabled the trackers used by sites as flightaware.

I understand it's been going through a very heavy maintenance. Should be back flying soon though

Thats an 124 not the 225. Don‘t know where, but read in the last days that Antonov does not have any Cargo which would require the big 225.

What's the status on that? There were even rumors that the Chinese would produce additional airframes, besides finishing the craft that already "exist".

Hard to say, as the deal was not exactly open. Despite there are high ranked official from both countries, the Chinese company used in the deal was just slightly more than a shell company. Some people compare the role of that company to the role of that Chinese company which brought the Soviet carrier as to be an amusement park before finally being converted to a combat ready carrier.
Although the deal does say making An-225 in China but it's believed that they're eyeing for the technology to make an An-124 class transport
Meanwhile the engine maker Motor Sich which was also to manufacture engines in China (in cooperation with a different company) get more news probably due to probes by Ukrainian government, and most recently they said they're planning to manufacture multiple model of engines in China in next 3 years teaching Chinese workers one on one and also to co-develop new engines with China
