I am confused. First they were going to build a new pier where the old interisland teminal is. But like all contructions projects in Hawaii, it is delayed or is it cancelled?

Now they want to build another concourse where the current Diamond Head terminal is located!!!

Construction should start in 5 years and take 5 years (yeah right!) to complete.

The Mauka Concourse appears to still be in the image in the article you have linked. This looks like the next step after that, it seems?

Looks like they are going back to a planned layout resembling this, which is good:

The picture shows a new concourse/terminal built over the current commuter terminal in the top left of the picture. When that will come to be who knows.

IIRC the plan I posted in reply #3 was made public several years ago, then they went on the cheap and planned this instead:

A simple regional extension of the Diamond Head concourse.



So based on the Star-Advertiser rendering it looks like they are going back to plan A which could mean a complete replacement of the Ewa Concourse as well. This is what HNL needs; get rid of those stupid buses.

Correct. The construction of the Mauka Concourse where the current Commuter Terminal is should be starting soon. Hawaiian desperately needs more space for check in, security, gates, lounges, etc. The interisland terminal (Terminal 2) is literally bursting at the seams!! This can't come soon enough. Based on HA's recent comments it sounds like they will be using their tax-cut savings to heavily renovate HNL's Terminal 2.

Mokulele has a notice on their website that they are moving to the Main Terminal (Terminal 3) effective May 1 ... It will be interesting to see what gate or area between gates Mokulele will be using.

The shutdown of Island Air has eliminated the need to build a quickie commuter terminal near Gate 6, so thankfully the State is going back to Plan A which is much better for the long-term.

The Mauka concourse is still on track. Now that the HA Mx/Cargo facility is finally done and the plan to move Mokulele in place, the rest of the project can continue. This includes the demolition of the old HA MX/Cargo facility, the demolition of the old commuter terminal and the completion of the A and G taxiway widening project. It seems that what was announced today, is above and beyond this longer term modernization plan that has been dragging on forever.

The recent announcements by HA regarding independent investment in the facilities, from what I understand, will be separate from the Mauka concourse. I believe what HA has in mind is in T2, involving creating more space for security, check-in, bag drop and the separate bag belt set-up behind the scenes. Maybe HA even has ideas to bring the aesthetics out of the 90s and improve the passenger experience in T2.

Yes, T2 needs some work. It was great for interisland only ops with HA and AQ, but HA's current operation has totally outgrown the check-in area and post 9/11 security situation in particular. I definitely hope they don't wait for the Mauka Concourse to be completed before renovating T2 ... it would be fantastic if they upgrade the existing areas of T2 in in the next year or two so they match the Mauka Concourse once it is completed.

They should've started updating HNL Interantional Airport first before that lousy overbudgeted monorail project, that's all I have to say about this. This is good, as HNL looks very outdated for a world class tourist destination and the main airport for the Hawaiian Islands. Hopefully it will improve HA's services and amenities in it's home hub.

The rail system is a City & County of Honolulu project, while the airport is a State of Hawaii project. Both are over budget and delayed, but not really related. HNL supports itself with fees while the rail is a never ending black hole of tax increases and extensions.

Ha Ha Ha. 5 years to start and 5 to be Pau at HNL I wish them luck but from Working there, I say double it. Man they are going to loose all the Hardstands for Transits and MTC work. Maybe they can move the Hardstands by the Tower.

The devil is in the details. I'm based at HNL, and can see a lot of questions that would need answering. The Diamond Head extension means removal of the fuel tank farm. Where do the tanks go? It also takes out a majority of the employee parking, which is already a disaster. Where will everyone park? By my count it only adds half a dozen gates. Is the price worth that few new gates? How will passengers get from the end gates to customs? Will the Wiki Wiki still be needed? Will the horribly overcrowded customs facility be expanded?

HAL, the pics in these are from the Hawaiiairportmodernization website, which hasn't been updated in ages. But with the news articles images that was released, shows that the tanks are still there.




What it looks like it's going to be similar to how HA currently operates its Widebodies out of the Interisland Terminal, where one widebody can go in and out at a time while, the smaller narrow bodies can taxi side by side. I'm sure eventually if the airport finds a suitable site for the fuel tanks, they would move it. And it would look like DL Cargo would have to move also for sufficient taxi clearance in the older pics.
As for the the customs, there probably will be a secured walkway similar to what the Ewa Concourse has right now to the current customs. The new customs is said to be much larger than the current one, stating it could process over 4,000 pax an hours, which remains to be seen if its properly staffed.



Since this is suppose to start build in 4 years, wonder if they are anticipating the Mauka Concourse to be finished by then? If not then its gonna be a mess for gates when they start closing gates for the new Diamond Head Concourse .

On a side note, wonder how much the city will be paying the post office for columns for the rail haha

I’m confused - the way I read the article, I thought the new FIS facility is going into this new concourse. Is that not the case? There’s not much room for growth with the current facilities unless I’m wrong.

I think this is a super exciting plan that’s only about 20 years too late and on way too ambitious of a schedule. This construction is going to eliminate the north ramp hardstands so I’m very curious where the replacements are going to be. I guess I’ll have to start parking my cargo flights at the main terminal. And as posted above, this has to be contingent on the new mauka terminal being operational before construction starts because otherwise the Gate situation will be impossible.

Anyone know where the employee parking lots are going? Too bad there’s not a grand master plan because they could have made the new rental car facility taller with 4 floors of dedicated employee parking. They could always move the lei stands and build another structure there under the railway but I don’t think it would be big enough. There’s the empty lot across from Dunkin Donuts - maybe a new structure there?

I went on HNN to read about UA1175 and saw the article about the new terminal. I figured it was just an update on the Mauka Concourse. I didn’t even bother reading it. When I finally read it I was surprised to read the article is about the Diamond Head Concourse being rebuilt especially because they are currently renovating it. Then I remembered that this is Hawaii. Of course we’ll spend millions to renovate a terminal slated for demolition in 5 years to build a billion dollar one because some government official has an uncle who’s a general contractor and his coworker has a brother in the same profession. Doesn’t matter to them as they’ll see some kickback. Just your average local suffers the financial strain. Paradise !

Don't forget that this is an election year and governor Ige needs to improve his image after the missile fiasco.

The rental car facility is late, the Hawaiian Air hangar was late (and riddled with problems), the Mauka Concourse has yet to start so this "5 years from now and built in 5 years" seems a little too optimistic.
