NCA and SIA to form strategic cargo partnership

Tue Feb 13, 2018 6:31 pm

Nippon Cargo Airlines (NCA) and Singapore Airlines Cargo (SIA Cargo) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a strategic partnership. The proposed strategic partnership will build on existing block space arrangements between the two airlines that have been progressively expanded over the past five years.

SIA Cargo president Chin Yau Seng said: “We value our longstanding relationship with NCA. The signing of this MOU marks our commitment to explore synergies and mutually enhance our product and service offerings for the benefit of our customers.”
“NCA has maintained a continual presence in Singapore for over three decades, and we are excited to embark on new partnership initiatives with SIA Cargo under this agreement. The proposed codeshare service will pave the way for future ventures, leading to greater customer satisfaction,” said NCA president & chief executive, Fukashi Sakamo.

Suppose good opportunity especially for SQ Cargo which has been shrinking year after year. Access to NCA network and capacity could help boost its footprint.

Hopefully SQ Cargo will order some 748F's in future.

I expect this more being SIA leveraging NCA's 747-8Fs (and other metal) so they don't need to buy their own to replace their 747-400 freighters as they are retired.

Yes long term I am not sure SIA will stick with dedicated freighters especially considering they closed the cargo AOC and merged everything back into the passenger airline while freighter fleet has been halved.

A deal with NCA could give SIA access to freighter capacity, particularly across the Pacific without worry of running its own planes.

A sensible move. The agreement might only cover Singapore-Tokyo for now but it will be interesting to see if and how it might expand to other parts of Japan and potentially other countries.

Its actually interesting that both SIA and NCA have shrunk over the years, and both are extremely conservative, so it will be interesting who really helps who here.
Though I guess initially they can coordinate traffic flow between SIN-Japan as they learn how to dance closer with each other.

Is SIA Cargo in it for the long haul? That's the question. If they are, then they have a very aging fleet by Singapore standards and it's time they bit the bullet on fleet replacement. This one has clearly been on the backburner due to recent financial woes at SIA and its time they laid out a strategy and focus for the future. I'm pleased to see cooperation between these two. Lots of synergies. They could ultimately unite (brand-wise) into a new identity focused on freight to and from east Asia. And give CX a run for their money. Time to move it up a notch, I say.
