Cathay Pacific to offer Macau ferry code-share service

Tue Feb 13, 2018 5:03 pm

Effective from 26 February 2018, the airline place its “CX” code on Cotai Water Jet services operating between Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) and the Taipa Ferry Terminal, in Macau

During the initial launch stage, Cathay Pacific customers in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore and the United States can book travel to Macau through the airline’s local websites, with tickets now available for sale. Booking eligibility will be extended to other international markets over the months ahead. Cathay Pacific customers traveling to Macau will enjoy check-through baggage, ensuring expedient and flexible inter-modal transport connectivity.

I'm a little surprised this hasn't been done before. Seems like a low-cost, effective method of capturing Macau O&D.

Cool idea, and yes should probably have been done earlier. Suppose they could also do same to mainland China ferry destinations also.

Related, when is the bridge to Macau opening?

If Cotai was already operating to HKG, then this seems like an easy win. I don't know how CX schedules their different banks, but it'd be interesting to see what kind of minimum connecting times they figure in for these intermodal connections.

Exactly! This is probably a desperate move from the Ferry company since in the not too distant future that bridge will open.

The last time I flew past it on arrivals in to HKG 3 months ago, it looked to be pretty much at the completion stage. Local HK papers say Q2 of this year.

- Why it wasn't done earlier and by other airlines?
- Why only to Taipa, not the other pier used by more population in Macau, and not to other ports in mainland China?

For the first few years, there'll be no airside connection between the airport and the bridge. It probably take them a few more years until they can complete the enclosed busway that would facilitate such connection, and that busway was only announced a few months ago. The ferry will most probably last until at least the completion of that busway.

Currently passengers can do so by themselves when they arrived HKG.
For outbound flights, they can check in and get boarding pass at the ferry pier.

Macau and cities around Pearl Delta are available for that services.

Yeah, I am aware of the current existence of such service, which is why I asked why aren't more airlines placing their codes onto the ferry and/or did so earlier/to more destinations for a more seamless transfer.

codeshare costs airlines money. If their passengers can do so by themselves, no need to spend such additional money.
