Is this a new config for their 77L? Two class only? Seems the perfect size to open long and thin routes just like this!

it's great news, but I think it's strange that EK will do this without traffic rights between GRU-SCL. I always thought that this will happen sooner or later but I thought that EK will have traffic rights.
Slowly EK is getting many flights back that were reduced, let's see if some more America flights recover the flights, or we can see some new destinations added.

It looks like finally the B77L is finding a good place, but EK is just using it like the B787, so why EK did not order the B787 before??

I would infer from the link that they do have traffic rights on GRU-SCL.
The article even outlines the possibility of Brazilians and Chileans travelling with their IDs only.

Sir the787-10s that EK has ordered are for the mid-to-long range (8 hours) missions. The 77Ls are still performing ULH missions with interim regional turn arounds.

Yup article states they do have the required rights.
Chile is going great guns at the moment,Particulary with their copper and now lithium deposits. This will imho work well and further strengthen Emirates overall aim to go from And to anywhere via Dubai.

I imagine this is likely to complete their South American network for the moment?
I guess they could try the old 'double stop' Venezuela and Peru? But I doubt it.

Another bit of ambition out of fort fumble, the current requirement is for a further 880 pilots from now until March 2019 to cover the 460 that have left in the last 12 months as well as the 300 or so who have tendered resignations with leaving dates within the next six months.
EK will struggle to crew this flight if things continue this way. Pilot numbers down from approx 4500 to below 4100 now.

Nah I don't think so - the new 77W's are 2-3-2.

The 5th freedom rights are a given. The fact they are not reflected in the GDS filing is just due to the fact that they have not have received all authorizations from both Brazil and Chile. It‘s just a question of bureaucracy, but there is no obstacle for the approval.

I heard about the 'pilot problem' also recently.I imagine they are busting a gut to rectify it.There has to lots of pilots who would like to fly with them considering the metal they fly.

What route will this flight take to SCL? East over Africa, or West over the Pacific and Asia?

What is the flying time for this flight?

It will be over Africa, it's much shorter, and think it will be around 14-15 hours to GRU and 2-3 more to SCL.

LupineChemist wrote:

No, the new business class was introduce like 1 year ago and it's 2-3-2 but in my opinion is much better than the old one, and the new First is also much better, introduced 1st December with an improved economy seats also, however first class is only 6 seats, old one in the same space can fit 8 seats.

I don't see Venezuela happening at all, the biggest market they can open now in South America I think is BOG, but BOG elevation kills the route non stop, maybe an stop somewhere in Europe could work.

I have just checked Amadeus and the GRU-SCL flights are bookable, meaning that EK has the 5th freedom rights and is exercising them.

For sure he is, but I think QR was planning to do the flight non-stop, so if QR decides to start they will have the edge, but if the market is good we might see EK trying to do it non-stop in the future, however it will be a really long flight.

I am really curious about this new product and configuration, because I don't understand how is EK going to configure the plane.

Well, KLM"s flights to SCL are from Argentina, not from Brazil. Different countries, different bilateral.

In any case, they do have 5th freedom rights. Without them, EK would not ever bother with this flight: flying a half (or more) empty 777 for 3 1/2 hours across South America surely is not EK's idea of a profit center.

To stop all the confusion re 777 business class seating. Straight from the emirates website. ALL Emirates 777s have 2-3-2 business class seating. Just different 'versions' of the seat.

I think BOG is on the Emirates watchlist. Hopefully sometime in the next 5 years, depending on aircraft technology advancements that would enable nonstops both ways, and of course market development.

Both MEX and BOG are challenging for now with respect to nonstop flights to DXB, because of their high altitude.

After problems with CCS, which included a suspension and resumption in February 2003, BA axed LGW-CCS-BOG in February 2004. There are so many problems with Venezuela that some airlines don't want to return.

Here's a 10 minute explanation of the revolutionary new Business Class concept on the EK 77L. Oops, sorry that's actually from 1992 at Continental. Oh well, "same same, but different" as they like to say... History repeats itself...

This is great news for chilean aviation industry, SCL finally has a direct link to Asia, which is very welcomed as our economy depends on our asian partners.
This will probably help to increase the amount of asian tourits, too.
Havent had the time to check, but are connecting times to mains asian airports good?

Emirates really shines with connections to India, Thailand, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Philippines, Indonesia, and up to HKG & parts of China, etc. Connections to points north, such as Japan, Korea, Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, etc. are all reached faster via the USA. However, pricing on EK, QR, TK and ET tends to be much more attractive, and that is where they have the edge.
