DL - ATL-DEN - 767-400 daily through Feb 15th.

Wed Jan 31, 2018 12:38 am

Hey all!

Planning a quick work trip to Denver and to my surprise my preferred AM departure (8:20AM) is a 767-400. Thought it has to be a one off for some special event in DEN area but it appears to be on the timetable from Jan 17th through Feb 15th pretty much daily except Sat which only runs Jan 20th through Feb 10th.

For a DL fortress hub to UA hub that has DL, UA and WN flying the route non-stop this kind of surprising. What gives with this oddball widebody domestic route? The only guess I have is ski traffic.

I lucked out this go around, only downside is my preferred return time I have to sit on a MD-90 with those awful seats for 3+ hours but the widebody outbound is worth it.

Sounds like DL is getting some more traffic from DEN and perhaps some slack sith the 767? It is odd that they are using a widebody on the route though given that it's not a repositioning flight or anything like that.

In addition to DL, UA, and WN, F9 also serves DEN nonstop from ATL.

DL has flown 767s on ATL-DEN on and off for years (although it was generally the domestic 767-300s). It's usually seasonal to correspond with ski traffic and widebody slack.
This is my signature until I think of a better one.

So just got back from this trip and holy ski traffic is all I have to say. Flight was 100% full and had a little over 30 standby passengers that did not clear. Quite a few large groups on board all probably going on ski vacation, baggage claim was at least 50% ski and snowboard bags. Made getting a sedan (vs SUV or Minivan) at National a dream as all those groups were looking for big SUV's or crossovers to carry them and all their ski crap over the mountain, ended up snagging a nice Infiniti Q50 3.0t AWD.

Return was much of the same but people on vacation hangover, flight was full but due to the snow that hit Friday->Saturday caused a number of no shows so had the middle seat free next to me.

MD-90 wasn't too bad for the 3 hour return, but that plane has the absolute worst seats of anything in the DL fleet that I have flown. They are like park benches, not bad for 1-1.5 hours trips to Florida but 3 hours the lack of basic padding starts to become very evident.

Ski traffic to Colorado from east coast and South is unbelievable. All the more easy to understand when there are no reasonable ski areas close by. Nothing that can match a Vail or Aspen

With the snow we've had this year (pretty much none), there's no reasonable ski areas in Colorado either. It's been BAD this year.

Way back, the 6am DEN-ATL was always a 767-200

Still way off on snowpack but the pattern has been a little more active over the past few weeks. A few smaller storms in the mix. Holding out hope for a strong finish!

I'm more surprised this isn't on ATL-SLC! I like the Utah snow way better (personally), plus its a hub of sorts on both ends.

Don't understand why people think they have to go to all the way to Colorado to ski when there are great ski resorts in the Northeast. Whiteface, where they had the winter Olympics in 1980, up in the Adirondacks is pretty great. There's several large resorts in Vermont as well.

The west has MUCH better snow and mountains, there's really no comparison.

I bet you could get an amazing lift ticket price with the whopping few inches we've had this season

Yes and no. I live in central Pennsylvania and to drive to New England is a good 8-9 hours easy, where one can fly out west in 3-4 hours. I’ve skied both, and the West is probably overall better, especially my personal favorite Big Sky, but Vermont certainly does have great ski areas too and New York.
That being said, I believe there is more skier traffic than a lot of people think, especially mid February thru March. I’ve been told that is not the case on the F9 threads before but I don’t buy it.

DL has 1x daily A333 on ATL-SLC that continues on to HNL so definitely has the lift there as well! All the other flights are mix of A321, 752, 753 and 737-900.
