And now, the only route I know about the downgrade is that 1 daily 777 and 2 daily 737 for the GUM-NRT route will all be the 737-800 on the GUM-NRT route.

We heard that the other day in the office. Im not sure if its true or just a rumor. My buddy over at 9K was mum on the subject.

Good luck living in Hawaii on 9K ATR pay.

Good luck also finding somewhere in HNL to stage this supposed operation.

If WN can make it happen I’d be fairly confident 9K, on behalf of UA could find the requisite space they need.

That said.. it’s really a nonstarter. There isn’t so much as water cooler talk about inter island service at UA. If UA were to start inter island service I doubt it would be with those derelict ATRs.

Now the flight is pure O&D which there is some of but not enough for a daily 737.

A thought out of left field: how about a 50/76 seat RJ?

Yeah, if UA wanted to, they could have done an inter-island operation long ago... and it would have been with larger equipment. You're right, those ancients ATR's aren't the right plane.

I still think it will be difficult for Southwest to find space at the peak times in HNL and OGG. But... considering the State is fawning over the prospects of WN entering the market, I'm sure they'll find a way.

Dropping Guam-Sendai means United will be out of Sendai altogether, right?

Will Saipan be better off without UA? They might as well just cut Saipan?

Then how are you going to travel between Mariana islands?

For travel between Marianas Islands there is still Star Marianas Air operating on some routes.

I don't think these Piper would be better than whatever UA is to offer.

Speaking of the Cape Air ATR's. Any truth to the rumor they are relocating them to Honolulu and operating UA express interisland?

This is anecdotal but my understanding of the Cape Air operation is that it was plagued by mechanical issues with the ATRs - can anyone confirm or correct this perspective? I highly doubt UA would want to move to inter island ops - what would that give them that their inter line with HA doesn’t? The market is much smaller now with so many direct flights to the islands from the mainland - I think it would be an exercise in futility. Not to mention if the ATR issue I mentioned is true, that rumor is DOA because locals are very very savvy when it comes to things like that - part of the reason WP had such a bad rap before the Q400s.

I left Micronesia years ago - who still flies between GUM and ROP/TIQ/SPN? This move will obviously cut frequency on GUM-SPN, probably twice daily to connect to the main banks.

One of the biggest challenges for 9K is that they only had two aircraft out there and, when one was in heavy check (stateside), that left no operational spare. So when you have an older ATR, flying in a marine environment with a lot of cycles, reliability takes a hit. These were vintage Continental Express ATRs that flew in the US years back. 9K has a heckuva solid mx program, as evidenced by the great work they do with the 402s in so many entities in which they fly, but the ATR thing in GUM was just a tough thing to do sustainably well.

They had Pacific Island Aviation doing NW Airlink on SPN-GUM in Shorts but did not last after 2005. That whole corridor does not seem to historically sustain regional airline contract flying?
