Who else will order the 787-10?

Mon Jan 22, 2018 9:09 pm

Now that the 787-10 has FAA certification, I was wondering who else will order the 787-10?

Aside from the 11 current companies (AF/KLM, ALC, ANA, BA, EY, EVA, GECAS, SQ, UA, Unidentified, and EK-pending) who else will order? Who will surprise us and NOT order?

Thoughts?

CX+KA may be a contender. They have dozens of A333s between them that can be replaced by the 787-10.

Possible problem for the 787-10 is Boeing's *alleged* unwillingness to discount prices enough to sway airline's decisions.

Any existing 787 operator is a possibility and there may well be those (like SIA) which has have not been 787 operators before, (even if the type is operated by a subsidiary airline).

I could see the following airlines being possible:

Turkish (has already ordered the -9, so I'd be very surprised if the -10 doesn't feature in its plans).
Saudia (high capacity medium hauler always welcome)
Air India (down the road, a strong possibility, once it work out which way is "up").
Thai (well, it has the -8 and -9 and again, a medium haul high capacity aircraft is always a strong possibility)
Qantas (if the -10 can cover most of its Asian routes, highly likely that it will get the nod)
ANZ (for the same reason)
Ethiopian (harder one, this, as it already operates A350s, but always a possibility, given commonality with the -8s and -9s)
Brussels/Austrian/Swiss/Eurowings (I could see a strong possibility of Lufty ordering 787s for its subsidiary carriers, mostly -9s, but -10s possible down the road).
Chinese Big 3: As CA and CZ already operate them and both they and MU will be looking for an A330 replacement in the next few years, the -10 must be seen as a strong possibility

Depending on what AA does with their A359 order, I could see AA ordering the -10 to begin their 77E
replacements middle of the next decade -( 7-8 years from now )

I think AC has a lot of potential. Higher capacity from YVR-Asia Rim and YYZ-Europe

I think so too

787-10 can replace the A330s and provide a slight bump in capacity as well. Currently they don't anything between 300 seats (A333, B789, B77L) and 400+ seats (B77W)

Lufthansa was at some time very interested in it. Maybe they will look into it when it comes to replace the A330.

The unidentified order is Saudia through the Saudi Ministry of Finance. And Vietnam Airlines will lease them from ALC.

contenders who haven't ordered yet:
Air China (already rumored to be close to placing an order some years ago)
Korean Air

Qantas did say when the took delivery on the 789 the 787-10 would be the likely replacement for the A333's

I could see TK and LY ordering the 787-10 if it can fly without having payload hit on heavier demand routes like IST-JFK,IST-ORD, TLV-JFK.

I see American as a likely customer, deploying the 787-10 trans-atlantic from all hubs except PHX and LAX. It would replace the B772ER systemwide across the Atlantic and to South America.

As for TK, I don't see them ordering the 787-10 as the 242t A330-300 can do every mission a B78J could do, minus a few hundred nautical miles. LY could use it to and from JFK though; however, I would expect that they may lease some through Air Lease Corporation.

AA has A350 on order which can replace the 772ER. If AA decides to cancel their A350 order, I could them operating the 787-10.

John Leahy is going to put his crystal ball up for sale on eBay when he retires. The lucky winner of that auction should be able to tell us every order going forward in time.

Delta's former CEO Richard Andersen said favorable things about the 787-10, but I can't see Delta ordering it for at least 15 years when it may be time to start replacing the older 330-300's.

Problem with the 787-10 is similar to the A35K: the targeted replacement aircraft is still very young. (A333 for the 78X and 77W for A35K).
TK, TG, QF and many Chinese airlines are candidates for the 78X, but only if they have short term leases on the A333. They might order 787-10s for growth though.

Can't see ET being interested in the 787-10, they use 789s for medium haul due to the high altitude of ADD. If they need something larger I think they'll order A359 regionals.

I'd be very surprised to see DL ordering 787s, they're going A330neo.

Talking about the A330neo, it will be very interesting which aircraft will be ordered first by CAAC, A330neo or 787-10. Neither model has been ordered so far for a Chinese airline.

I'll throw in my wildcards: CI, I'm quite sure they need to follow EVA Air's example. And a controversial one: EI. Now that IAG apparently has reallocated EI's A350s to IB, I think there is a good chance IAG will convert some 787 options for EI. The 787-10 can offer growth, which the A339 can't.

What about AM? I can see some from MEX to MAD, CDG, GRU and EZE, as well as some domestic (TIJ, for example) and Mexico-US flights.

Hey guys,
Yes I see Qantas as a good chance for Dreamliner 10s but not a big fleet.... Mainly Asian and perhaps a few peak 'premium' transcontinental services. Despite what some in the Australian Aviation thread think, I could see Jetstar operating a small fleet of larger Dreamliners (9s or 10s) for Japan, Honolulu and perhaps Bali services.
Yes I agree that basically every current and planned Dreamliner operator could potentially operate Dreamliner 10s. Those operating A350s however may be less likely...
Cheers

Now that really would be something! It would be like WN ordering A320NEOs.

LY could easily use them on TLV - London, Paris , Moscow and Barcelona
And of course if they can make NYC and BKK work
