Status of ex-SQ A380 9V-SKA?

Wed Jan 17, 2018 4:04 am

I see the ex-9V-SKA has recently been re-registered as 2-DRPA. Usually this means the airframe will be parted-out and scrapped. Have the plans for this aircraft been finalized?

Really? last I heard it was still in storage. There was also a rumor about a leasing company converting 9v-ska into a freighter and leasing it to FE or UPS. Probably not.

Considering it was the first super jumbo in commercial service, it should be made into the likes of a restaurant or hotel :P

Reregistering a plane means it will be scrapped... really??

Where did you hear this 'so called rumour' from?

Why would either FX or UPS be interested in a single A380 what would be the point of that?

There would need to be a lot of cooperation with Airbus if it was ever converted into a freighter and to be honest I can't see that happening.

You already know the answer as to why Airbus abandoned their plans for a A380 freighter early in it's development.

THose first few 380's that had to be re-wired and have the rib repairs in the wings are probably
good candidates for the scrap yard. Besides, the parts could be valuable as this
would be the 1st frame to be scrapped.

Not even 12 years old and the sharks are circling to tear her apart.

There is a lot of value in the first couple of frames of any airliner type to go to the boneyard. Not too long ago 7 year old 73Gs from Easyjet were going to the breakers after just seven years flying.

The engines and many spares are worth a fortune as manufacturer sourced parts tend to be expensive. Why pay dealer price when you can get your part from the scrapyard for much less? All it takes is a breaker that is properly accredited and qualified and those spare parts will fly off the shelf, fully checked out by licenced engineers and ready for putting into rotation.

It was most likely reregistered as Singapore Airlines did not want to give up that registration number. So upon going back to the leasing company it was reregistered. Doubt it will be scraped right away. The leasing company is considering their options with aircraft. :old:

Guernsey is marketing its registry to aircraft in between leases. Just about the only conclusion one can make from the re-registration is that no commercial operation is planned, as that is not allowed on the Guernsey register.

I confess I have no knowledge of how this process works- what sort of parts are we talking? Landing gear, avionics? Is there a broker who sources them and then offers them to airlines or maintainence providers?
