IAH to become first airport in North America to have nonstop service to all 6 inhabited continents with launch of SYD

Sat Jan 13, 2018 6:02 am

In the past, many have debated the status of IAH-AKL as whether it is part of Asia/Pacific or Australasia, or even Oceania for that matter. Complicating things on top of this was the the eventual cutting of LOS service to Africa by UA. However, that gap has been filled in by Atlas Air for some time now which operates IAH-LAD 2x weekly with the 744, so IAH actually does maintain regularly scheduled commercial service to Africa. With the launch of SYD, IAH will have nonstop service to the continent of mainland Australia, and thus can unequivocally be named the first airport in North America to have nonstop service to all inhibited continents of the world.

Does freight really count?

Your average Joe walking in off the street can't get on a flight from IAH to any of the other five inhabited continents, can he?

The inhibited continents? Maybe they need to loosen up with a scotch or two or a skinny dip in the ocean...

IAH has already had and claimed this distinction for years, ever since NZ began service.

AKL is every bit as much the same continent as Australia or Oceania or WhateverWe'reCallingItThisDecade; that LHR is to Europe.

Same continental plate, same general geographic location, blah blah blah.

Ah, okay then. Have done a quick google, are bookings open to the public? Still a bit of a grey area IMO.

New Zealand is NOT part of the same continental plate as Australia, unlike the UK/Ireland and Europe. By a purely geological perspective New Zealand, Hawaii and the other Pacific islands do not belong to a continent per se. “Oceania” is a purely political construct to give them something to belong to.

The bulk of New Zealand does sit on the Austrlian Plate (Auckland included) The eastern part of the South Island sits on the Pacific Plate. NZ has always been considered part of Australasia.

You are incorrect.

Please pay closer attention before attempting to admonish; I didn't say "New Zealand"... I said Auckland, which (along with the rest of the north island) very much ~is~ on the same plate as Australia:

To be clear the Atlas Air flight called the "Houston Express" for Sonair is now fully open to the public for booking.

So yes, IAH will have bookable pax service to all six permanetly inhabited continents (of the seven as taught in the American system).

Can you aware me how? ITA Matrix can't find it, it isn't mentioned on the Atlas Air website and the Sonair website is dead.

Last I knew from associates that booked it a few months ago you had to go through a travel agent in the Galleria. WTA or Carson IIRC

There are not many other airports with service to all continents either; JNB, DOH, AUH and DXB are the only other ones that I can think of.

The whole point of this topic is that the status of IAH-AKL does't matter to begin with because IAH-SYD is undisputedly on as the Australian continent.

What's the link of where you can book IAD-LAD? I wouldn't actually do it, but searching for the website didn't work out well for me and I couldn't find it.

Also, EY cut AUH-GRU, so AUH only has service to five continents, not six.

As I said several posts up, you have to book it through a local travel agent.

I am not sure what "more legit" means. They have scheduled, bookable service to Africa. Just saw the plane again last week at D making its run.
Just because it is not bookable online does not mean the flight it is not there; one has to book it via a travel agent but it is still public.

now if United brought back IAH - LOS that would give them every continent at one airport which would be a good trivia questions :-)

Nah, if so someone would have already pointed out that Antarctica is populated year-round too and has been for years now.

Airports with service to all continents excluding Antarctica is a much better pedant avoiding approach, IMHO.

I guess this means I'm out of the pedant's closet!

So this is the annual topic where we discuss how in America there are more than 5 Continents, while the rest of the world uses the standard: Africa, Asia , Europe, America and Oceania.

Something about Australia being a continent and the rest of the South Pacific Islands being continentless doesnt make sense but hey to each its own..

I love it when people split hairs to create their own reality, location on a continental plate does not denote being part of that continent, your argument is stupid and wrong.

In your argument Europe and Asia are on the same continental plate so they are one continent, India is on a different continental plate to Eurasia so its not part of Asia? And half of Russia is in North America.

New Zealand is in Oceania but Oceania is a region not a continent, New Zealand is not a part of any continent.

Not even Zealandia?

Zealandia ( /ziːˈlændiə/), also known as the New Zealand continent or Tasmantis,[2] is a nearly submerged mass of continental crust that sank after breaking away from Australia 60–85 million years ago, having separated from Antarctica between 85 and 130 million years ago.[3] It has variously been described as a continental fragment, a microcontinent and a continent.[4] The name and concept for Zealandia were proposed by Bruce Luyendyk in 1995.[5]

The land mass may have been completely submerged about 23 million years ago,[6][7] and most of it (93%) remains submerged beneath the Pacific Ocean.[8] With a total area of approximately 4,920,000 km2 (1,900,000 sq mi), it is the world's largest current microcontinent, more than twice the size of the next-largest microcontinent and more than half the size of the Australian continent. As such, and due to other geological considerations, such as crustal thickness and density, it is arguably a continent in its own right.[9] This was the argument which made news in 2017,[10] when geologists from New Zealand, New Caledonia and Australia concluded that Zealandia fulfills all the necessary requirements to be considered a continent, rather than a microcontinent or continental fragment.[4]

Sorry Australasia is a also region not a continent, if you click through the Australia link on the Wikipedia page you will see that it does not include New Zealand. New Zealand is a weird place, it doesn't have states or counties either. There was a debate a while back if North and South Islands were even official names.

Actually there are multiple standards worldwide, not US seven versus five. To consider the Americas as one continent is just as absurd to many as to NOT consider Europe and Asia one continent.

There are five, six, and seven continent systems taught which vary all over the world (there is even a four model). There is no "standard". So off the high horse.

Plenty of Islands are not considered part of continents by the way; again these are theories all over on the issue.

Wikipedia (while often flawed, and not perfect in this case) does a decent job of explaining the various conventions used and geological vs geographical models.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continent

"The seven-continent model is usually taught in China, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, parts of Western Europe and most English-speaking countries, including Australia[22] and the United Kingdom.[23]
The six-continent combined-Eurasia model is mostly used in Russia, Eastern Europe, and Japan.
The six-continent combined-America model is often used in France and its former possessions, Italy, Portugal, Spain,[24] Romania, Latin America,[24] and Greece.[14]
A five-continent model is obtained from this model by excluding Antarctica as uninhabited. This is used, for example in the United Nations[25] and in the Olympic Charter.[26]"

Nice try but on the subject of New Zealand you will notice from the Wikipedia page you link that New Zealand is included in NONE of the continent models.

I agree with you theres no "right" answer, individual countries' education makes the subject too diverse, I do find the idea of several countries "continentless" hilarious and silly..

I am not sure who you are referring to with nice try, but I never mentioned New Zealand, nor do I consider it part of a continent, and I have geography degrees from Europe and the United States. So next time make sure to post to whom you are actually referring since it was not me as I did not mention it.
