LH DEN-MUC Switching to A350-900

Thu Jan 11, 2018 7:28 pm

Starting March 26th, DEN-MUC is switching to an A350-900 from the current A340-600. This will be the first scheduled A350 to DEN - looks like a slight decrease in capacity.

It will actually be about the same capacity if not slightly more (unsure what A346 configuration LH uses for the route, and which A350 configuration they will use). F will be eliminated, but I doubt that it was ever really necessary for DEN-MUC.

DEN ist mostly A330 at the moment, only occasional, max 2/7 is 346. This is an overall capacity increase!

What is the source for this? I just checked a date in June and it's still loaded as a 346.

at the moment its mostly operated by 333 with some 346 in between:

https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/lh480

If you have no flightradar premium account you'll see a lot of 346's this week, since November it have been far less. Might be different in the summer schedule...

Since November I count 18 346, all other days 333

Yep - you are correct

I wouldn't be surprised. Honestly, any MUC route is fair game. BOS and DEN have the A350, LAX and SFO have the A380, my guesses would be ORD, CLT, and MIA for future A350 routes in that order.

MUC-YVR is going 359 as well.

I wonder what the plans are for the FRA - DEN flight which is currently operated by a 747-400. I know Denver did get some 747-8s last fall so maybe an upgauge in the near future? Good to see some newer metal in Denver from LH. . .

Thanks for the source! I'm assuming this will be in additional to the already-announced MUC-BOS, DEL, BOM, and SIN flights... And presumably that will allow for parking another 346, or perhaps allowing it to replace a 343 that would then move to Eurowings/Brussels Airlines.

Any word on switching EWR/MUC (LH412/3)? I'd love to see that go A359.

Nice to see LH replacing the A346 with the A359. The A346 burns a lot of fuel and the A359 should lower that. So by April 2018, the A359 should be flying to YVR, DEN, BOS, EWR, BOM, DEL, PEK, ICN, HND, HKG, and SIN if I'm correct.

What is the long term plan for the long haul A330's at MUC? Are they planning on replacing the A330 on routes to YUL and CLT for example with the A359, or keep the A330 in the fleet for now?

Yeah, LH's A346 are amazing. Unfortunately they don't fly to BOS anymore. :(

LAX and SFO get A380s from FRA, not MUC. MUC-SFO and LAX is still A346 for the MUC route.

These are all interesting planes for DEN. LH is the first and only airline to bring the A330, A340, and A350 to DEN on regular service at various points.

So this summer are MUC-YUL/CLT the only North American routes from Munich flown with the A333?

No, I distinctly remember there actually being a bit of controversy some time back over this as LH decided to move some A380's to MUC to stick it to FRA, and I'm pretty sure SFO and definitely LAX got the A380 to MUC while FRA is swapped with the 346.

I don’t think it’s happened yet, NS season from late March I think?! I don’t no to much about LH. Although I’m not sure it was SFO, but LAX/HKG/PVG? Or PEK?

Saw this today on the official DEN Instagram, will be cool to have the A350 here even though it means no more A346.

With this change, I would assume that DEN-MUC must be doing well? I am sure having connections on both ends is part of it, but it seems like they’ve been very successful with both FRA and MUC from DEN on this go-round.

Winter 18/19 is MUC-PVG/MIA/SFO which is different to NS. I’ll find the link, bit hard on a phone.

For selfish reasons, by far the best part of this news is that I no longer have to fly to BOS to see a LH A350. Nothing against Boston, in fact it's closer to FL, but I despise Logan and it is a breeze to visit the Int'l terminal in DEN compared to BOS.

LH is replacing all of its the A346 routes with A359's exactly because they have the same number of seats. So capacity stays exactly the same.

That's a few too many routes. MUC-PEK is on the 388 through the summer, as is MUC-HKG. MUC-HND stays on the 346 for now. LH will need 9 or 10 frames in service to cover these routes.

In terms of up-gauging, LH has asked DEN before what it would take to do dual level boarding for the A380 (not much). While I could see LH taking the 744 route and going to a 748i, I don't see them going to a A380 anytime soon. I think they will wait to see what the three additional new European flights (Norweigan to Paris, Edelweiss to Zurich, United to LHR) does to overall demand before they get anywhere near to that change.

I fly the 787 from DEN to LGW all the time, even when I am going to FRA, simply because I feel much better with the higher pressurization and humidity, plus a business seat on Norwegian is typically cheaper then a premium economy seat on LH. I might have to try the A350 though, and see if I get the same benefit.
