* QOB went into paint at TSV yesterday, so should come out in a couple of weeks with a shiny new Silveroo livery.
* NXE has been in maintenance in CBR since 17/11/17 and may or may not be the 12th 12J98Y aircraft (as in I genuinely don't know if it will be or not).
* I understand XZJ has had WiFi fitted, but I could be wrong... and, unless it's been put back on, XZB has had its WiFi (and the associated decals on the fuselage) removed.

-XZB was 1st aircraft to have Wifi fitted and sure the decal was promotional only now as more aircraft have it fitted no longer required.

An observation. The only state capitol that appears on an ac is SYDNEY. How ironic.

VH-OEF "Sydney" is one of the few remaining 747s in the fleet. This is because it is a 747-400ER making it one of the youngest 747s Qantas operates. Other 747s that have now been retired were named after other state capitals such as VH-OJA "Canberra", VH-EBB "Melbourne" or VH-EBW "Brisbane". It isn't because Sydney is where they are based or see as most important.

Does anyone know when Qantas is required to exercise 787 options?

They will be required to exercise options by the end of this year, but we will probably either see an announcement at the half year results in Feb or full year results in August

Thanks, do you know how many are up by the end of the year? Does Qantas intend to purchase any more for JetStar?

I dont know the exact number but it would only be a few at most. IIRC (it was quite a long time ago I saw the exact number so things may have changed) the 15 options expire over the next 2 years with the 30purchase rights going up to 2025. I am of the opinion that the 15 options will be used for mainly expansion while most of the purchase rights will be replace the A330's. Qantas did say back in October that they probably wouldn't use all the purchase rights to cover the A330's as neither the A330 or the 787 is the right plane for domestic use as the economics stand up, they are very interested in the 797 as the economics would be far better for domestic, so we may only see 15-20 purchase rights taken up.

Where JQ is concerned they haven't said anything though the may get them some more 787's as it is getting to a point where they wont be able to expand due to current utilisation of them

You are so right. The fact is that I am Melbourne based and I love perpetuating the Melbourne Sydney rivalry. I do feel that as QF is an aussie icon then they should ensure at least that all capitol cities are represented on the fuselage of a jet. Maybe something to think about when they buy the ulta long haul ac that are mooted.

TN486 does make a good point. While capital city names were on aircraft in the past, the first few 744's were all named after capital cities lets hope that the 778 or A350 gets the capital city names back after all it is the national airline not Air Sydney

I think that would be a good naming concept for the 777x or A350.. Name the first 8 after state and territory capitals. I feel it could be symbolic of the fact they are moving away from Air Sydney with the new fleet types including the Perth international base and extra US routes from Brisbane and Melbourne. They probably will be Sydney based though.

Those of us too old to still remember, the original 7 Boeing 707's in 1959 were named "City of Canberra, and City of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane Adelaide, Perth and I believe Darwin. the capital of each state / Territory.

The WiFi equipment was removed late last year - dome, the works. A mate of mine sent me a couple of photos of it (immediately after taking them), and I believe they're in a FB group somewhere.

Flew -VZZ on QF78 last week and it's also got the wifi bump installed.

Word is, -XZB was fitted with earlier wifi hardware hence it's removal.

Why is it only -VZZ and -XZA thru to P only operate the PER-SIN-PER, SYD-DPS-SYD, NOU and POM flights? I did read a few years back that the VY* and most of the VZ*'s were fitted with de-rated engines, but as far as I'm aware all QF B73W's are EDTO/ETOPS compliant.

My understanding the Wifi Fleet was briefly grounded due certification which was quickly resolved but wasn’t aware the Wifi hardware was updated to newer version.
The VZ* - XZ* fleet usually op the east - west due to their IFE interior fit out, high spec rated engines & as mentioned not all QF B737s are high spec rated as this adds a cost.

It's probably also to avoid complaints about the lack of IFE on a full service international flight!

I notice 738 VH-VYJ is stagnant in TSV (along with Q400 VH-QOB). Guessing 2 roos in for a paint job .

SBW is unlikely to be repainted as it covers for both QantasLink in Australia and Jetstar in NZ (and was only fairly recently painted all white for that reason).

Add -QOH to the Q400 list. Also have -NHN in Singapura, -NXE in CBR heavy mx.

Singapura - I love that :chat:

Re -QOB, I actually do think most of the QF 1984 liveried a/c looks worn out and tired externally so I hope more gets into the paint shop ASAP. I shot -QOF five days ago and it looked tired and faint.

Our national airline has always been Sydney first and the rest of Australia a distant second. This will always be the case.

The arrival of the B787 has certainly proven you wrong with QF basing 1st 8 frames in MEL & BNE. Plus MEL & BNE have been receiving a lot of love with the launch of direct NRT services plus MEL-SIN upgauged to A380 equipment & MEL-SFO announced.

Yes, that's true with the 787s, but how long has it taken MEL to get a NRT service, still don't get a Bangkok service, nor Honolulu, how many years has SFO been connected to SYD no South American flights from our national carrier. Nor South African and I know that QF cant fly every where from all cities. Its ok for you in Sydney you have their entire network at your front door. To all of us outside of Sydney and NSW we all know and except its a Sydney based airline.

Unfortunately, Qantas neither has the fleet nor the demand to offer services to every major Asian city from Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, etc in addition to Sydney. Flights to South Africa and South America have to be run on either 747s or A380s making more than one route uneconomical. The reality is that Qantas is based in Sydney and whilst it has been improving its network outside of Sydney, it will be a long time until the network is not Sydney centric. Once more new 787s come online, MEL-BKK may become a reality.

Qantas operated up until 2008 but axed it due to rising fuel prices. JQ replaced mainline on MEL-NRT until a restructured, leaner QF was able to return to the route in 2016. Melbourne have JQ services to BKK,HNL,SGN,DPS,SIN. Yes it’s not mainline but they come under the same banner group.
HA don’t even serve MEL as it can’t support both on the route, VA didn’t last on the MEL-JNB route.
I’m confident once the B789 fleet grows QF will open new direct routes from both MEL & BNE.
Majority of carriers serve SYD ahead secondary cities, even QR operated their A380 ahead of MEL & going 2 x daily.

Thanks for that. Oh it is fun keeping track :) As I type Q400 -OQH is scheduled for QF719 TMW-SYD (10/01/18). Time will tell if its been silver roo'ed. Just gonna throw a 'maybe' into the wifi section of the game. A332 VH-EBK went into BNE on 01/01/18. Laying bets if it will the first 332 wifi aircraft. The rollout due to start 2018, so no better time that JAN 01 :D Please not this is pure speculation. Don't get your panties in a bunch if it doesn't happen! ;)

I'm guessing the 4th will NOT be named skippy as the Qantas article states skippy will join quokka 'later in the year'. In my mind FEB/next month when the 4th is due, is not 'later in the year'. Just my thoughts. HAPPY FLYING EVERYONE:)

Just thinking out loud, if QF never ordered the 380 all those years ago, do you think they would have gone for a 748i to replace their 744s ? And in the future do you think QF will just become a 787 airline for all their long haul flying, I cant see how the 777x, and A350 will fit into their plans in the future. What are your thoughts?

No, they would have ended up with a bunch of 77Ws instead. The 748i EIS was more than five years years after the A380's and would have been far too late for QF.

And no, I don't see QF becoming a 787-only airline. They have a clear need for something larger/more capable, even if they continue to shift toward more P2P routes. The 77X or A350 will be for very long routes (if they transpire) where the 789 can't make the distance and also for trunk routes where there will always be demand for 300+ seats in one hit.

Just wanted to add that I have just recently had a dinner with the Chief Pilot of Qantaslink and he said that they are adding two A320 aircraft sometime in Autumn this year. Can't find anywhere to confirm this but that is what he said, nothing more.

Gosh 789 deliveries are slower than I had anticipated. All this talk of QF expansion and new routes with 789 will take some time to come to fruition. But... it's sure a step in the right direction. What's with the change of Jetconnect NZ registered 738 onto the Australian register? Why bother? Curious to know.

Due the Tasman changes and more A330’s operating ex-BNE & ex-MEL there will be less B737 Jetconnect operated services hence the aircraft will be moved over to the VH register.

To enable higher utilisation of the fleet in-between trans Tasman sectors thus reducing the time spent dwelling on the ground. I've also noted several VH registered B738's operating QF14* routes recently to/from NZ.

Gosh 789 deliveries are slower than I had anticipated. All this talk of QF expansion and new routes with 789 will take some time to come to fruition.

Qantas takes a measured approach to aircraft purchases/expenditure. They spread their expenditure over each financial year. You'll notice its basically 4 aircraft per financial year. This keeps the 'stock market' happy as there are no 'big hits of expenditure' at any one time. Financial years in OZ run from June to June. It's quite sensible. HAPPY FLYING EVEYONE :)

That would explain why they haven't announced another route (existing) for the second frame that will be freed up from MEL-DXB-LHR

So with QantasLink receiving two ex Jetstar Airbus A320s, will they be repainted in Qantas Link colours?

Was the 380 reconfigure to occurs in FY19 or Calendar19? That’s going to be a significant period out of service for that too.

Looking forward to hearing the new route regardless!
