More or less, the 321 runs PHL-SFO-PHX while the 320 goes PHX-SFO-PHL. The 320 flight gets into PHL after 7PM so not many connections to be made.

I probably should've said SFO-PHL instead of PHL-SFO because the eastbound has an A320 (AA855) but westbound is all-A321 and A332.

What would be the longest in both directions?

PHX-PHL and back. Outside of hub-hub, its likely PHX-BWI with CLT-UVF right behind that.

Updated Fleet Plan:

Highlights:
333s here through at least the end of 2020
738 retirements pushed back a year (now starting 2020)
50 MAXes deferred from 2020-2022 to 2025 & 2026
Expedited winddown of the 763 fleet in 2020 (down to 5 by end of 2020)
12 788 deliveries in 2020
49 ERDs showing as sticking around through 2020 but I doubt that.

I found the American Eagle fleet plan to be fascinating. There are some pretty clear trends, the CRJ200s are being drastically reduced (surprise!) the Dash-8 variants go away, and there are a few more E175s.

But the parts I found interesting were the CRJ700 trend:
2017: 110
2018: 119
2019: 111
2020: 111

That 2018 bump seems weird, are they switching operators who bring their own CRJ700s? or are they taking a few new ones in for 2018 and retiring the oldest ones come 2019?

Also the ERDs seem to show AA picking up a few more planes from outside. As of 2017 they have 21 in service, and "At the end of the first quarter, the company had 23 ERJ140 regional aircraft in temporary storage, which are not included in the active regional ending fleet count." which means they own 44 total, but they'll be up to 49 of them by 202, so where do the last five come from?

How many cr2 are flying now? Also, which others are leaving beside the zw aircraft?

An A321T, N116AN, is exiting TUL tomorrow evening with a new (temporary) special promotional livery. I’d assume probably going to LAX or JFK.

Why use a 321T when it sees all of six airports? Unless its promoting something in one of those cities, it seems like we would benefit from the livery being applies to a general 321.

This is the one off Facebook. It’s a promotional decal for their partnership with Stand Up to Cancer and Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War.

To my knowledge, reconfiguration has not begun yet. It is scheduled to begin in 2019 and finish in 2021. DL manages to pack in 192 seats despite having 1 more row of F, so I'm sure AA can figure out how to do 190.

Does anyone know if AA will be taking A321neo ACF? If so, the seating for the A321neo would still be different. Perhaps AA wants to get as close to 200 as possible to maximize returns on 4 FAs like they do with 150 seats in the A320.

According to that AA Fleet Google Docs site, N979AN was updated to the new interior configuration (16/156). Looking at FlightAware, it sat in Tulsa from the beginning of April and just now arrived back in DFW.
Anyone have eyes on it and can check the interior configuration?

It was the first of many 738 models to be reconfigured to the MAX interior. The cabin is identical to the MAX now.

I’ve seen photos, it’s indeed the same configuration as the max including space bins, sky interior, and the new lavs. Though the photos I’ve seen the aft galley is the current one just retrofitted to accept atlas drawers and carts, I don’t know if they swapped that out after the photos were taken or not...

Looks like they are refitting the older 738s with PTV first. Does anyone know if the 45 to 75 738s slated for retirement will receive the new interior?

Any other 738s refitted?

Will be interesting to see what becomes of the A321.

The MAX does not have PTVs and the PTVs on the existing 738A subfleet will be ripped out as the aircraft receive their new configuration. By the time retrofits are finished, PTVs will only be offered on the A321T and widebodies.

I know, but N979AN was a 38D, not a 38A. So perhaps the 38D is getting refitted before the 38A, even though both are planned to be eventually refitted.

It appears that the A332 rumor may have been purely for parts; however, if EY retires the A332 due to their own woes, AA could buy some for accelerated retirement of the A333.

I'm not feeling the removal of the PTVs from the majority of the fleet. Passengers perceive PTVs as "value." I know there are many arguments for the advent of streaming content to a PED but there are also numerous disadvantages.

I was traveling recently from LAX to CLT on a former US 321. I was on the aisle in Premium Economy, and when the window seat passenger sat down, he took one look at the blank seatback in front of him and said, "This plane sucks. Where's the TV?"

I really wish they would rethink their decision.

With Doug Parker around, it's probably not going to happen. I do wish they would keep the PTVs on a subfleet of A321s for longer routes, not just A321T. Perhaps we will see this with the A321neo if they decide to put flat bed J in some of them for Hawaii, Alaska, and South America.

By the way, there is no Premium Economy on the A321. PE is only on heavies.

I get on a plane and sigh when I see TVs in the seatbacks. (If a plane is old and still has them overhead, I don't find that as sigh-inducing.)

They just add so much light and motion to the view of an airplane. They especially suck on a redeye where they really light up the cabin.

The other thing is I find most live TV just not to be worth it. I'd much rather have streaming media to a PED, or airline provided viewing screen.

Re: AA Fleet Updates - 2018

A couple fleet related Q&As from this week's Arrivals newsletter.

Q. I’m really excited about our B787 order. With American’s continued growth, are there plans to not just replace aircraft but to expand the fleet, open new international routes and maybe even place an order for a larger aircraft like the B777X to take our network to new places? Or the B787-10?
A. Vasu Raja, vice president, Network & Schedule Planning: Our long-term plan is to grow about as fast as the U.S. economy grows. So, there is definitely some growth built into our fleet plan. Buying new planes is just one way to achieve that growth. Others include using larger aircraft, flying them farther [LAX-Sydney (SYD) was significant growth just from one route] or using our aircraft throughout more of the day, meaning scheduling them more efficiently. As for the B777X and the B787-10, those are both very large aircraft that aren’t in our current plan. However, our Network Planning and Fleet teams are always looking out into the future to evaluate our long-term needs.

Q. What is the timeline for getting our aircraft amenities/features and the look and feel “synced”?
A. David Seymour, senior vice president, Integrated Operations: Our interiors are not as consistent as any of us would like. There’s a project under way right now to fix that. We will be retrofitting our Boeing 737-800s to make their interiors the same as the new B737 MAX, including newer seats, larger overhead bins and power at every seat. The first of those aircraft just received the prototype installation at Tech Ops – Tulsa. We will start the production retrofit lines in late summer with completion scheduled for mid-2020. We’re doing the same thing on Airbus A321s, with interior overhauls beginning in early 2019 and done by the end of 2021.

Thank God AA identifies this aircraft separately - 7M8. Allows me to avoid this Hell Ship.

This is so disingenuous when the finished product offers less in every seating class than what is offered today. They must know that.

Sounds like the 78J is not the cards for quite some time. Another 787-9 order could end up replacing the rest of the 777-200ERs. As I have stated earlier, and I'm sure Vasu Raja would agree, the 777-300ER fleet is very young and will not to be replaced until ~2040. I think AA eventually operates both the 78J and 77X but the 78J will be introduced before the 77X.

How about syncing the 787-8 and 777-200ER fleets with the B/E Super Diamond seats instead of the Zodiac seats? The 22 787-8s on order will undoubtedly have the B/E Super Diamond product, making an inconsistent product. Its already inconsistent with the 777-200ER fleet. Yes, I know it would be expensive to order B/E Super Diamond seats to replace the Zodiac product, but its a terrible product with the motion across the ocean and unpopular.

The late MIA-DEN is one of the next routes to go to the MAX. They’re also running the 738K (the Oasis bird) on MIA-LAS exclusively for the next 5 days, will be interesting to see if that continues.
