Delta Widebody Thread - 2018

Wed Jan 03, 2018 4:01 am

A new year, a new thread to cover the widebody activity at Delta. 2018 looks to be a busy year ahead.

Anticipated highlights on the fleet side:
1) Retirement of the final 744, N674US, imminently bringing to an end decades of the Queen at Northwest/Delta
2) Continued delivery of 359s with the brand new Delta One Suites; 6 on property now; 5 more due in 2018
3) Beginning of 772/77L retrofit where Delta One Suites will be installed; first frame due in mods Jan/Feb
4) Retirement of the final 2x 763 (domestic) frames; currently due in Fall 2018
5) Continued slow pace retirement of oldest 763ER frames; 3x due to be retired in 2018; pace to pick up in 2019 when 339s arrive
6) Beginning of 763ER high J -> 763ER low J retrofit; 14x frames are expected to get the retrofit

Anticipated highlights on the routes side:
1) Continued migration of AsiaPac routes out of DTW to 359; DTW-PEK/PVG to join NRT/ICN; ATL-ICN, DTW-AMS (1x daily) & LAX-PVG also migrating to 359s in 2018
2) New widebody routes announced to-date: ATL-LIS/PVG, IND-CDG, JFK-LOS, LAX-AMS/CDG, MCO-AMS
3) Widebody routes disappearing: EWR-AMS, JFK-AGP/DKR/SNN/SVO, NRT-PVG
4) Migration of 763ER-high J routes to 763ER-low J begins: ATL-BRU/DUS/SCL, CVG-CDG, MCO-GRU, PDX-NRT & SLC-CDG

I wonder why it's taken three weeks already to get N505DN ready for entering service. I would think that it's ideal to use for flight crew training, while the first four are flying to ICN and NRT.

Did the 747 do a fly by after departure? I see its enroute to MZJ now, I know the weather in the SE is dicey today to say the least.

Yes. I was there. Would post a pic or a video if I knew how to do so - or was granted attachment rights.

Apologies - must have missed this. How man "high J" 763ERs does Delta presently have? Is 14 the entirety of the "high J" 763ER fleet? Put differently - is this conversion program going to ultimately result in Delta getting to a single, standard 763ER configuration?

DL currently has 36x high-J frames so only a subset is getting converted to low-J. I think the near term rationale is that both the 359s and upcoming 339s are being delivered in "higher-J" configuration. Thus leaving the need for low-J aircraft to cover routes that warrant it (ie. Japan-Hawaii as well as low premium transatlantic/south america). This retrofit restores the necessary balance and fleet flexibility given the routes and the retirement of some of the oldest 763ERs which happen to be low-J (the ex-gulf air frames). Longer-term, following the first batch of retirements of 763ERs (to be replaced by 339s), i suspect only 7x high-Js will remain (the 76Ts - frames with crew rests), the rest will be low-Js. So the 763ERs will become the low premium long-haul frame for DL longer term.

Thanks for the insight - makes sense. So it seems like the logical place to concentrate the smaller "high J" subfleet going forward will be missions with relatively shorter stage lengths but relatively higher premium demand. That sounds, to me, like LHR - first and foremost - and maybe a few other places in Europe?

I'd tend to agree. time will tell. The 76T fleet is currently based out SEA doing transpac flights which are obviously primed for the 339s (if they can fill the extra seats). At that point, the 76Ts should go on routes that are shorter distance with high-J demand as you indicate. The wildcard obviously will be J product. Unlikely the 76Ts will be retrofitted with the Suites. So will LHR see 764/772/77L/359s with Suites products to compete with the BAs of this world or 332/333/763 with current J product? That's the unknown.

That's exactly what the plan looks to be. Based on the current June schedule, the high-J 763 fleet (which should be ~15 aircraft) will be flying the following routes:
PDX-LHR (4x weekly)
SLC-LHR
MSP-LHR
DTW-LHR (3x weekly)
DTW-CDG
DTW-FRA
DTW-MUC
ATL-FRA
RDU-CDG
EWR-CDG
JFK-GRU
JFK-FRA
BOS-LHR
BOS-CDG

All those appear to be routes with premium demand. As stated above, the 7-strong 76T fleet will be flying SEA-NRT-SIN, SEA-ICN, SEA-PEK, and SEA-PVG.

I wonder what's been going on with the sixth A350, N506DN, which arrived at ATL four weeks ago today? I know that it was delivered there for induction, but I'm surprised that it hasn't been doing some flight crew training flights, as the induction process probably only takes two weeks.

I noticed that B772, N864DA, has ferried to QPG today (tomorrow in Asia!) Is this for mx, or could this be the first one to get the Delta One Suites mod?

Maintenance. Its replacing N866DA which was there for 16 days.
N863DA is the scheduled prototype for the Delta One Suites.

Since it was the first time ATL has done a PTS on the 350, it took a little more time. The plane is done, and it's scheduled to do a few Air to Air video shoots on Monday-Wednesday.

I tell ya what, when I saw N706DN pass over about a week ago, it sure does look good in the new paint with the belly logo. Beautiful bird to look at.

Is there a reliable way to determine DL's domestic widebody schedule without dummy booking? For AA and UA I look at their Domestic Widebody Cargo timetables, but appears that DL Cargo doesn't break out their timetable in this way.

77L: DTW-PVG flight cancelled - technical issue (N707DN)

So I had a friend on this flight, ofcourse he was bashing and I tried to explain this is extremely rare, it was rescheduled for 8am the following morning, was it the same bird? Apparently It left around 11am. I happened to be in DTW Thursday and noticed the normal pm PVG #583 was boarding about 2 hours behind, I presume just playing catch up. Would love to hear any info though.

Btw this thread is awesome, love it and please keep it up. Seeing some A330's into CUN now is nice, although MSP got downgraded for like a week straight, bummer for them. Last year one of the MSPRSWMSP was an A330200/300 for the winter. Would love to see an aircraft swap like that on my next RSWDTWRSW segments this week ;)

Any idea when the N863DA will enter mods?

Looks to tentatively be around February 15th. It will take about 60-70 days to complete.

Will the aircraft receive a heavy also during the mods,or that's just how long it takes for everything to be approved?

All of the 777s are coming due for a heavy check, so they are doing the mods since the interior has to be torn out anyways.

The 777s are also getting the AIMS2 avionics upgrade as well.
