Regarding the 777 mod, it appears that DL loaded the first modified 777 into the schedule starting in July, to be used on DTW-PEK on alternating days with an A350.

The internal code for the seat map that shows is D7L and it shows the following layout:
28 Suites (1-2-1), 48 Premium Select (2-4-2), 220 Economy (3-3-3).

No idea now to post the picture of the seat-map, but you can search a DTW-PEK flight and find it in July.

LAX-PVG becomes a daily 359 on 7/2. A scheduled reposting flight is scheduled on 7/1 from DTW-LAX.

I am happy to have the Airbus aircrafts up at LGA instead of the MD-88/90.

Looking forward to the C-series coming on board as well.

It's only temporary for about 2 weeks looking at the schedule. Looks like it goes back to daily 359 on July 22nd.

I just returned from Amsterdam on DL 145. I went over to AMS on a DL 777-200ER. Very nice plane for its age. The return trip back to SEA was on ship # 196. She is a very old 767-300 and she shows her age. The toilets were literally falling off the walls and had several layers of latex molding trying to hide the gap between the toilet back and the wall. Does anyone know if this ship is due to be retired or are they going to redo the interior. She needs it badly...I was very surprized that Delta would fly a ship in that condition. My seat in Delta Comfort wouldn’t stay reclined. It was a terrible flight. almost 10 hours fighting the seat.

Next month there's going to be a lot of A321 movement at DTW so I could see where they're getting all of these A321's from. I actually see on DTW-BOS and SLC that the 757 and A321 alternate, assuming they'll catch up on deliveries.

Does anyone know why some of DL's original 757-200s were retired as early as 2009-2011 while others of similar age and older are still flying?

I noticed several ships 606, 607, 625, 626, 656, and 677 were retired in this early time range, while similar-aged sister ships (and even older ones) were kept flying?

For example, Ship 656, a -232 built in 1990, was retired in 2011, while N752AT, an older 1984 757-212 flew on until 2016, far outlasting ship 656... Were some of those early 6##s problematic frames? I'm sure there is a perfect explanation for this retirement schedule if someone could enlighten me. Thanks!

Well, recall what happened in 2009-2011...a major recession.

With the recession came a lot of lease renegotiation/similar activities across the industry. Speculation on my part, but I suspect some those 757s fell in that category.

As previous posters noted, the economy played a part. There are other reasons...

The ex-ATA birds were the only domestic ETOPS 757-200's in the fleet at the start of the NWA merger. DL needed them for Hawaii. And the ETOPS NWA -251's were still doing Atlantic flying on the old NWA network and several others were doing beach runs out of NRT.

Some of the 757-232's parked and retired and broken up were at D-checks which cost several million dollars per plane.

DAL also decided to keep the NWA 75N's (5500 series) after the initial plan was to retire them shortly after the merger. They got refreshed interiors and were painted.

Is there a plan to convert any more 757s to the 75P configuration? The currently loaded schedule on delta.com for the week of 7/23/2018 looks like it would require 7 frames to operate...

There is no such thing as the 75P anymore as they reverted them back to the 75G.

Some of them got the new NG overhead ceilings. DL standard sidewalls & bulkheads for nearly all of them. The lack of IFE was glaring. That said...there were original DL 757's that weren't much better.

To me, the old NW Recaro first class seats were more comfortable to me - and best part - they had tray tables that laid flat so I could work on my laptop without it tilting at a 10-20 angle or risk having my meal slide off. The only awful thing with them was when the person behind you tried to put their tray table up. That was bad.

No more 757s will be put in the 75P configuration as the only other DL 757 with the same 8 door exit layout is the D1 equipped 75S. DL really has no way to predict what bird will show up were especially with such a small subfleet so some of those will definitely change to a 75D/H.

DL really has no way to predict what bird will show up were especially with such a small subfleet so some of those will definitely change to a 75D/H.

I assumed that since it's a subfleet, they would be assigned to specific routes rather than covering for any 757 route in the system... Maybe they are more or less interchangeable with the 75Hs since those also have ETOPS, but I would assume that at the very least the 75H and 75P fleets would be scheduled separately from the 75Ds.

My guess is that this is because routes like SNN, KEF, and PDL have strong demand among well heeled tourists who are DL frequent fliers, but who wouldn't pop for D1 on flights that are quite short. There is more demand for the full D1 experience on the new domestic routes that are getting D1 757 service such as JFK-SAN and JFK-SEA because premium business travelers appreciate the extra space and quality food while on corporate expense accounts. Personally I could see paying for Premium select on any of those routes, but not D1. The eastbound is so short that if you had the full meal experience you would have little time to sleep.

If you thought the 75Ns were bad after the “lite” refurb post merger, you should have seen them prior. They were they definition of “ratty” by about 2007/2008.

Once NW exited Ch 11 there were tentative plans to refurb the 757 and 744 fleets. Both got put on hold with the merger and economic downturn.

Originally the 75Ns as said were not going to be repainted or refurbished and were originally going to be retired by 2010/2011, but that changed and some stuck around until about 2015.

A couple of things, why are there still a few 757's without Winglets, yet it states "mod complete"? is there any reason they would mod but not add winglets, I've been on a few 757s recently and wondered if my bird was destined for the desert.
Second, If I am reading correctly, thank god, the 737-800's are completed with updated interior, I presume, updated AVOD? Those TV's were ancient, if this is a correct statement, on my upcoming ATL-SJD flight I only have to be concerned if one of those GOL 737's shows up, yes? I will be beyond pissed if there is not TV on that flight.

Third, I thought the A320's were getting AVOD, but again, if I read correctly above it would seem not, can you provide input? Much appreciated on all. Great thread as well as I'm impacted by all of this, or I should say now, enjoying all of this a few times a month

The 757s that don't have winglets have some sort of wing repair that doesn't allow for winglets. Someone else may be able to expand on that.

As for the ex-GOL frames, they generally stay on short haul flights like ATL-BHM/CVG. You should be fine on your SJD flight.

Does anyone know why hardly none of the Airbus narrowbody aircraft have SAT TV installed but almost all of the Boeing narrowbody with IFE have SAT TV? I actually enjoy Live SAT TV whenever there is a game on or a major news event, but I haven’t seen it installed on any of the new A319/A320/A321s with IFE installed. all of the newly modded 757s and 737s got Live SAT TV installed but none of the Airbus’s?
