Do you mean do higher cycle costs out weigh the potential revenue earned by having an aircraft that can carry more payload or fuel or both?

Of course it all depends on the mission the aircraft is going to be sent out on. If the airline realises that it isn't ever going to reach max take off weight why but an aircraft certified for a higher weight.

As for what makes sense it's a case by case basis. Airlines do their math and figure out what they need. But I would say that if the aircraft can be filled up it's generally the case that the revenue earned out weighs the cost of the higher certified weight. I mean the manufacturers also do their math. If they're going to sell aircraft with higher weight they need to be sure there are airlines out there that would want the aircraft.

Have to admit, I had a bit of trouble initially distinguishing this one as an A35K versus an A359.

Normally, I'd look straight to the gear for the dead giveaway, but this one was a bit of a challenge.

The dead giveaway is the number of windows between doors L1/L2 or R1/R2. There are 15 (minus any blanked off) on the A359 and 22 (minus any blanked off) on the A35K!

A350 might be the first wide-body that looks better with the smaller variant IMO. Other smaller variants of different wide-bodies look kinda overwinged.

Perhaps that’s because A359 wasn’t initially supposed to be the baby of the family.

I actually like the A35K better. It has a bit of that slender elegance of the A346 which I most liked about it. Sort of like a supermodel. :hearts:

Not sure about the "supermodel" analagy, but I`m with you on the A35K being better proportioned. I believe a stretch of this
aircraft would look pretty decent too, it might also give the B777-9 some added competition if AB were to consider it :)

That’s because it is the first? wide body where the varients have different wings. Look at the 787/777/330 etc all have the same wing on all length varients. The A350-900 has a smaller wing than the A350-1000 so I guess they look more in proportion.

Well, not quite. I think the A345/A346 have enlarged wings compared to its smaller sisters.

Yes, the A340-500 and A340-600 did have a three-frame insert in both the wingbox and the wings as well as a 1.6 extension to each wingtip.

And I believe the A350-900 and A350-1000 share the same wing, with the A350-1000 having an extended trailing edge that adds around 4% to the total wing surface area.

Oh yes of course. I was sort of thinking of them as two separate families in my head. 342/343 shared and the 345/346 has the same hence why the 345 looks over winged because it’s the same as on the much larger 346.

Just forwarding information observed on the google list, but I think it is interesting nonetheless:

Two deliveries for QR today:
- MSN110 (A35K)
- MSN163 (A359)

Also, this is the 6th delivery of an A35K (3 for QR and 3 for CX so far).

we're sitting on 195 and there are 4 frames at the delivery centre (CA/PR/SQ/CI). PR will go 196 or 197 depending on that CA frame. Other frames due to the delivery centre imminently include CA/SQ/QR/HU. So i think we can say with 100% certainty that the 200th will go to one of CA/SQ/CI/QR/HU. Pick your horse & wait and see!

for those in this forum obsessed with delivery flights rather than deliveries, we're currently sitting on 193 with those two 3U frames delivered in Dec 2016 still sitting @TLS.

Nice to see Qatar deliveries finally caught up. With the exception of 2 or 3 -1000s.
After looking at the production list, looks like -1000 activity is increasing too. Should be roughly 7 frames sitting around?
4 ULRs around (1 at the delivery center and the rest in flight testing?), with 3 more in the FAL?

QR has caught up a lot but is still behind. To put it in perspective, Airbus is delivering MSNs in the 230 range right now. There are still 8 QR frames undelivered of MSN 215 or lower. The QR 359 backlog should clear by year end. The QR 35J backlog should clear by Q1-2019.

On the A35J front, CX has (1) in flight testing, (3) in cabin fitting, (1) in re-work and (1) in FAL. QR has (1) in flight testing, (1) in pre-flight testing, (2) in cabin fitting, (2) in re-work and (1) in FAL. VS has (1) in re-work at Bordeaux (ex-prototype) and (1) in FAL. BF has (1) in re-work at Hamburg (ex-prototype). Total = 16

On the ULR front, SQ has (1) at the delivery centre, (2) in flight testing, (2) in cabin fitting and (1) in re-work (post flight testing). Total = 6

If you want to be pedantic then technically no you are wrong. The ICAO is A35K and the IATA is 351.

So technically A35J/A351 and 35K/35J are all incorrect.

Thanks hkcanadaexpat for the updates. Wow, it seems like SQ will receive their 7 ULR successively pretty quickly.

Also VS taking ex-prototype for A350-1000? I haven't heard of this. Sorry, been away for some time from this thread.

Total = 6

Thanks hkcanadaexpat for the updates. Wow, it seems like SQ will receive their 7 ULR successively pretty quickly.

Also VS taking ex-prototype for A350-1000? I haven't heard of this. Sorry, been away for some time from this thread.

Good move for A. If the ULR will prove performing well might receive more orders. And maybe we can see a A350 1100.

The ULR is a very niche plane, I would not expect many more orders for it (which is ok since it was cheap, SQ’s planes probably paid for all ULR unique development on it).
