Hmm, very interesting -- historically (I fully admit that this isn't based on any factual data, so I'm certainly not arguing that I even could remotely be right!) I always thought the domestic birds were interchangeable with the 77Es on TATL routes. Thanks for the clarification.
Are there specific routes that are flown by 777-200As, or are the routes [that end up with 772s] themselves fairly random?
Either way, I guess from calpsafltskeds' post I have nine planes that might allow me to get into Premium Plus

That selection time frame to get this seat for free is determined by your status. The other option if there is no status is to simply purchase an economy plus seat and perhaps when you are checking if you are on an aircraft that has Premium Plus installed then try to change your seat into one of those seats.
Ever since United rolled out the Premium Plus seats I've been noticing at least half of the seats are being taken by paying customers and the remainder are going to nonrevs who didn't get a business class seat or are going out empty. Once United starts selling the seats and the upgraded service launches I'm not sure if that trend will continue or if we will see a higher number of passenger purchasing Premium Plus seats.
I grabbed a seat in row 22 just in case the plane ends up being one with Premium Plus (I'm measly Premier Gold at UA). I knew it wasn't officially being sold as a distinct fare class yet, but I also didn't think an upcoming flight would be on a type that would have Premium Plus at all. Now it's just wait and see if the specific 77E (if it's a 77E) has it...
Interesting observation about the seat utilization. UA Y+ -- at least on flights I've been on -- hasn't been too full, so with the new product I'm not sure if paying passengers will move into PE if the pricing isn't right.
On the other hand, I've been on six SQ PE flights this year and in every case the PE section was completely or one or two seats shy of full.
