Nice milestone for UA and they will get these units pretty fast between now and April. So who is the "flagship" at UA then? 77W or 78J? Both should be sweet with Polaris/PE/E+.

How many 78J is united getting in the next 6 months? suppose to be 3 before the year ends right?

I think it's 9 by Q2.

3 or 4.. 3rd is on the FAL now. 4th is LN 548 from the J test program. Don’t know where that one is in terms of refurbishment. It may or may not be ready before year end.
3rd is LN 782, 5-9 are LNs 795,800,814,822,828. Info stops at LN860.

It appears it may be the “won’t it”. N14001 is currently doing a C2 off the Carolina coast. I’d be surprised if they proceeded with delivery today.... but.... :crossfingers:

The 789 is on the most interesting routes. The 77W is the biggest. The 78J is the best experience. It's a tossup. :-P

There's a flight built for tomorrow 2711-03. However, It all depends on today's test flight.

According to UA staff it will be delivered some time within the next two weeks.

Also, I noticed that a lot of the B39Ms have registrations beginning with "37." Is that a nod to the 737?

They’re going to wait two weeks? Probably because of the 78J delivery to pay for first.
Nx75yy is the overall pattern, ‘x’ being essentially random and ‘yy’ In numerical sequence. However ‘N37’ does appear six times in the first 11 registrations so there could very well be something to nodding.

You are onto something. We know the last 3 numbers in the sCO scheme mean the equipment number, but the first two are variable. This probably is because the letter "O" can't be used so "CO" couldn't use their code anywhere in their scheme. The 39M is the first aircraft where the second digit means something.

Here's probably more than anyone cares to know about sCO N numbers. There is a pattern to the numbers, understanding some numbers are not available. There are definitely favorite numbers to start with and if not available, they move on to other starting pairs of numbers.

sCO units first and second numbers of each N number:

73G: (700) All except 4 units start with a 1 or 2
738: (201-250), Most start with 1,2,or 3 (favorite starting numbers 13/14/24/26/27/33/34)
738: (251-299), All start with 3 or 7 (favorite starting numbers 73/37/33)
738: (501-542), All but 1 start with 7 or 8 (favorite starting numbers 76/77/78/87) - this scheme does interfere with 39M scheme listed below. Of course, they can't be a dupe, but you do have numbers like N87507 and N37507 with different types. 738's start with a 7 or 8 and 39Ms start with 6 or under
739 (400 range): Vast majority start with 3 or 7, (favorite starting numbers 37/38/39/75/77)
739 (800 range): all start with 6, (favorite numbers 68/63/69)
39M: (7500 range) Different scheme, second number starts with 7, (Note that 16 738 units have a second number starting with 7 and also in 500 range)
752: (100) Most start with a 1, (favorite starting number is 14 and 17)
753: (800) 10 start with 5, 11 start with 7, (favorite starting numbers 75 and 57)
764: (060/070) 15 of 16 start with 6 or 7 (favorite starting numbers 66/67/69/76/77)
772 (001-022) 18 of 22 start with a 7, (favorite starting numbers are 78/77), (those that don't start with 7 - 3 of 4 have 7 as second digit)
77W: (different scheme, but all start with 2, (favorite starting numbers 23/21/26)
788: (901-913) 10 of 12 start with 2, (favorite starting numbers are 27 & 26)
789: (950-999) 16 start with a 2, others with 1,3 or 4, (favorite starting numbers 24/27/26)

A number of the 789s were inducted here at IAD.

The 39M, 77W, and 78J are the first types where the four digit Ship#s actually have meaning. (7500, 2100, 1001) all other pmCO just had a ‘0’ added to the front of the existing three digit CO #. Wonder if they will ever deal with the 0/3 matter :scratchchin: Given it been that way from the start, probably not.

Is there some kind of event planned for the 78J at LAX and EWR? Water cannons? Tours? Anything?

It’s a big PR deal for UA to have her first in the USA.

If so it won’t be until the first flight with paying passengers.
N14001 is scheduled for delivery today and will ferry CHSIAD as UA2711 (if all goes well) for fleet induction.

Additionally, they confirmed the Q4 deliveries: 3 x 787 all J's, 3x 739Max, 1x 77W.

Not on the books.... yet. UA seems to be thinking these things though very carefully. See if anything happens when the thinking is done. :scratchchin: :airplane: :spin: :ziplip:

I agree UA will order more 78J's in time. I was pointing out the commonly accepted top up order is not there. Since that rumor was added to the site, we've seen an additional 789 order the rumored order for 78J's was not added. Therefore, it doesn't exist as financially UA would have to report it.

With that in mind, the UA capital plan in the 10Q looks like it's full for 2019 (primarily 78J's and used nb a/c) and 2020 (primarily 789's and used nb a/c) for aircraft. 2021 has some room for adds.

United Airlines is scheduled to take delivery of 14 787-10’s from Nov 2018 through 2024; aircraft nose number 1001 through 1014. Nine will be delivered between Nov 2018 and April 2019, and then one per year through 2024.

The fuselage is 18 feet longer than a 787-9: totaling 224 feet 1 inch
The wing span has the same geometry as 787-9
318 passenger seats
Additional cargo. The 787-10 can hold an additional 4 PDUs in the forward cargo compartment and an additional 4 PDUs in the aft cargo compartment.
240 Minute ETOPS

Seat count is -

44 BFirst / 21 Premium Plus / 54 Econ+ / 199 Economy

BFirst Polaris All Aisle Access seats are
manufactured by Zodiac Seats UK (ZSUK).

Premium Plus economy seats are MiQ series,
manufactured by BE Aerospace and are in 2-
3-2 layout.

Economy seats are Aspire series,

Main landing gear (MLG) is modified to
accommodate semi-levered functionality on
takeoff (SLG).
0.9º increase in rotation angle reduces takeoff
field length by ~300 ft.
SLG enables 787-10 to meet takeoff field
length (TOFL) requirements.
SLG is equivalent to ~2400 lbs. of payload on
a field length-limited mission.
MLG support structure is re-gauged to
accommodate increased landing gear loads.
No changes to braking system, wheels, tires.
Tire inflation pressures are adjusted for 787-10 weights.

787-10 radome supports both KU & KA band while the 787-8/-9
radome only supports KU band.

The 787-10 will have Gate-to-Gate Wi-Fi
functionality allowing connectivity access while
at the gate (based on geographic regulatory
requirements).

The 787-10 Onboard Media Loader (OML)
uses Solid State Drive (SSD) storage
compared to Hard Disk Drive (HDD) on the
787-8/-9.
All seat back monitors are 1080p resolution
displays and are larger than those of the 787-
8/-9.
The Premium Economy seats have different
sized monitors in the arm and seatback
locations.

The 787-10 is the first United Airlines aircraft equipped with Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast

What do you think about how they got around the 10Q? Delayed signing until after 9/30. Why keep it a secret if they didn't keep either 789 top up order a secret? Through a lessor? That's a shxx ton of capacity.

Many reasons why either side would want to push signing the deal into Q4 (Boeing already hit their Q3 targets and wanted to use this to make sure they meet Q4, UA to downplay CapEx, UA wanting to downplay the capacity war that they have started, part of a larger order where other components are still being negotiated, etc.) In the world of quarterly earnings vs. long term value, it's likely a short term reason why. I wouldn't read into it much.

Having seen the weather radar I agree that’s quite possible... it’s not like it had to be there at a particular time.

I cannot wait until the 787-10 is crossing the Atlantic on a very many routes...2024 for all 14! I’m not getting any younger! But I will be one happy flier on a 787 in a Polaris seat, after a a couple hours in a Polaris Lounge!
I have been doing far, far more domestic trips these days, and I am so eager for many 737MAX’s flying- how fast will they come on line?
Last: and we’ve discussed this before many, many times... but the First Class interiors of the 752’s are becoming worse and worse every time I’m on one.
Last week from Denver to Newark the 752 I was on was in such bad shape it would almost worry someone if she was air worthy!
In seat 1A, the wall panel down under the footrest was “missing” and the rubber molding around the top of the galley bulkhead was falling off and there were giant air bubbles under the blue-grey wallpaper. Scrapes and other repairs were sloppily painted over in a dissimilar grey/tan color- almost like someone who used nail polish on a car.
The FA’s were really, really great. Service was the tops!
But these 752’s must get a real serious renovation because it’s simply wrong to charge Polaris prices to fly this aircraft TATL and have the front cabin so conspicuously worn down. What will UA do, there is no way they can fly these planes in that condition for another 8-10 years?
The economy cabin looked good actually- but F was like it was for Walking Dead!

N654UA 763 Polaris retrofit is just over 2 months in the shop...issues? N660UA is still flying around as the last one in the old config...I would have thought it would have been in the shop already. Either way, it won't be long.

You do know we just don't send these Airplanes in for just Seat Mods. They are also schedule with their regularly & required Maintenance Checks. Yes the aircraft is late. No it's not because of Polar Seats. The aircraft also had it's C check. And the Check found issues. Which is the reason for the Check to begin with. Now planning back in Service around Nov 20.

Corrosion starts to become a bigger issue at this point in an aircraft’s service life (among other things) which require more extended maintenance visits.

For the record, I've been tracking the Polaris conversions:
The 11 non-STC 763s have taken an average of 75.4 days with a range of 57 to 84 days, so N654UA would have a range of 11/3 to 11/30.
The 8 non-STC 772s have taken an average of 61.5 days with a range of 58 to 75 days.
It appears all the 763s in service are flying, so N660UA hasn't gone to HKG for Polaris. Unsure if this was planned to reduce Mod by 1 unit, but EWR-MAD/BCN were changed from the 772A to 763 effective 10/28, leaving EWR-DUB as the only 772A TATL flight. Note that there are 3 ex-HA units at GYR and could be flown to HKG to keep 2 7763 mod lines open.

772:
N774UA exited HKG maint 2789/9Nov

788:
N27901 exited HKG maint 2795/9Nov

So, in the not so distant future, the 763 fleet will be fully Polarisized...will the 764 be added next?

As for the few Polaris 772’s, are they being used mostly for the longest and most competitive routes, Eg; to Asia vs Europe?

Completely random, but a lot of ORD Asia flyers are surprised a good # of times.

Good for Chicago! Until the nonstops to Asia from EWR are all Polarized, I’ll either fly through SFO to get a 77W or fly another airline. I don’t want a chatty seat (or worse) mate for that long. I require privacy and all asile access and window/s. Although the interiors of the 752 look like my dad’s 1962 Comet does today.

United's 787-10 at IAD is currently showing up on FR24 as "UNITED10" in the maintenance hangar. I wonder if it's just testing or if it's actually going somewhere? I assume the former.

I am looking at an internal United program called Concourse Manager. I "see" it (A/C 1001) sitting on parking spot HA1 in front of a hangar at IAD. It is not routed and there is no maintenance being performed on it. They have not set up a maintenance shift turn-over page for the induction process yet.

Concourse Manager gives you a visual representation of where each United airplane is located at various airports. It also gives you routing and maintenance information.
