NK doesn't seem to be interested in adding any additional capacity outside of Florida so maybe Sun Country? Even that I'm not sure would ever work as they would have to expand their fleet, service, and their new ULCC model.
It's also why AA charges outragous fares to PHL and DCA as well.
I thought Sun Country would consider it... but I wouldn't consider Pittsburgh part of the "Sun Country" (neither do they)
I saw Frontier was having a blowout sale last week, they had flights from KMSP to KCLE for $17 on way.
We priced out a trip from KMSP to KCLE... but tacking on a rental car to get from Cleveland to Pittsburgh doesn't make it a steal anymore.
I would think KPIT would be ripe for a discount airline to hub out of. It seems the discount airlines just have KPIT as a destination, and not a hub. MSP is a Delta hub, and a destination for the discount airlines... so to do discount from KMSP to KPIT you have to first fly to the discoun't hub, then off to KPIT. For MN, it's usually SWA to KMDW, then on to KPIT.
When USAir up and left, didn't they leave the facilities and logistics behind for an airline to swoop in and take over (offices, gates, hangars etc. etc.)
Instead it seems KPIT turned into a ghost airport for a few years and the massive void has just been picked at by various airlines over the years. I just can't believe SWA, Spirit, Allegiant, Frontier... none of them have a KPIT - KMSP route. I can't be the only person in MN who needs to get to Pittsburgh?
