I just checked Routesonline and found some updates for SEA service during S18:

-EK will downgauge SEA-DXB to 2-class 77L from August 26 to September 30

-Effective May 1 AC will change 5 of the 6 daily SEA-YVR routes from Q400 to CR9. Nice little upgauge, I still wish they could make YYC work year-round though.

-DL had previously listed one daily 738 on SEA-YVR then removed it in January, it's back now as a summer seasonal 739.

Does the EK equipment go back to a 77W in October?

Wouldn't count on anything substantial from GEG. GEG-ANC was apparently a huge disaster and was immediately pulled after the route started (although that's completely different from the possible routes you mention above).

GEG-ANC was a once weekly seasonal flight. They ran it the whole season and never brought it back.

Yeah. It's just a seasonal downgauge, even though IMO the downgauge would be more fitting in January/February when loads are typically at their lowest on SEA-DXB.

AS tried an experiment. They took a 73H that normally would've parked at GEG on a Saturday night inbound from SEA - and flew it to ANC and then back on a redeye - in time for a Sunday morning GEG-SEA. Never heard much about its performance but that it never came back, there you go. GEG folks are so ingrained that anything on AS must go through SEA. Plus an 8pm Sat departure to ANC just never seemed right.

I saw a comment on the One Mile at a Time post talking about Emirates cutting capacity to the US, including the SEA downgauge, and it said that the reason why SEA is downgauged to a 77L for a month is runway work. It goes on to explain that one runway will be closed and the other one shortened. So...
SEA has some more runway work coming up I guess.

I'm just summing up the route changes I've heard about for SEA recently:

-JAL is finally resuming SEA-NRT using a 788 in late 2018 or early 2019. In 2020 the flight will switch to HND.

-AS is adding a 3rd daily SEA-JFK on an A320, leaving SEA at 7:05 am, arriving at 3:35, leaving JFK at 6:55 pm, arriving back at SEA at 10:26. This third daily flight will start on July 6.

-On Oct. 28, LH will downgauge SEA-FRA from a 744 to an A333 for an unknown amount of time, probably just for winter.

Source for the JL flight: https://www.bizjournals.com/seattle/new ... liner.html It's behind a paywall, but the entire article can be read if you click the "loading" button as soon as you see text.

JL's resumption of SEA-NRT is pretty likely, but I won't really believe it until there is an official press release. LH downgauging their SEA-FRA flight from a 744 to an A333 seems more appropriate. Plus, LH is in the midst of retiring their 744 fleet. There are others that have expressed interest in flying to SEA like TG, QF and PR...but I'll believe it when I see it.

Those airlines (and any others not already firmly announced) would be better served waiting to start service to SEA until the international terminal/FIS expansion is completed late 2019
Why subject your customers to long wait times to get through immigration/customs/baggage claim?

Yes! I agree, it will be great to see another international flag carrier at SEA, and it's a great addition for the Alaska Mileage Plan. I'm just spitballing here, but with all the gate shortages at SEA and JL's partnership with AS, could we see them parking at S after arrival for customs then getting towed to N (I don't know if there's any 787 capable gates left there though) for departures and to make it easier for pax connecting from Alaska flights?

The inbound passengers would be ok if new airlines offset their arrivals to 2pm or later or earlier than 10am.

This would definitely work. I've been in the South Satellite at 8-10 am a few times and the only traffic I saw was a few DL domestic flights, the two HA flights, and the second daily EK flight back when it operated. There was about 3 or 4 available gates, and I think that if JAL arrived around 6-8 am and departed anywhere from 9 am to 11:30, they'd be fine.

Yes, that could definitely work. Didn't NW's flight from NRT arrive around 07:00 back in the day?

Couldn’t get Behind the pay wall. How likely do you guys feel this is going to happen within a year? Narita will be great, however haneda will make transfer difficult even though it makes more business sense considering both ANA and Delta fly into Narita.

The top 10 destinations traveled to from SEA that DL does not currently serve nonstop from SEA are DFW, IAH, PHL, STL, TPA, CLT, RNO, SAT, CLE, and ABQ. The lack of nonstop service to CLE from SEA on AS, DL, or WN is a huge hole, even though F9 has less-than-daily seasonal nonstop service to CLE from SEA. CLT also only has nonstop service to SEA on AA.

The top 4 destinations traveled to from SEA that do not have nonstop service from SEA on any airline are CMH, BDL, ORF, and JAX, and AS doesn't currently serve any of these 4 destinations. There is enough demand for either DL or AS to add nonstop service to at least CMH, BDL, and ORF from SEA.

DL is still expanding its SEA hub, and DL could add nonstop service to at least ABQ, CMH, CLE, DFW, BDL, IAH, OAK, PHL, and RNO from SEA. Will DL be announcing any new nonstop routes from SEA this year (in addition to already-announced SEA-IND, SEA-MCI, and SEA-IAD nonstop service)?

Yesterday F9 started SEA-AUS (A320) and resumed SEA-CLE (A321), and today they resumed SEA-COS (A320). On Thursday NK will start ORD (A321), MSP (A319), DFW (ditto), and FLL (A20N); all will be summer-seasonal. My apologies for the brevity of my post, I just don't have much else to say about this.

Your statements are probably indisputable...except maybe by DL and AS themselves, since they haven't started service to the mentioned destinations. Somehow DL is able to find gates space at SEA for these three (I presume) 1X daily flights. But it will become increasingly harder for DL (and even AS) to expand much further for maximum connectivity. If DL is willing to work some flights on hardstands and buses...maybe. Only time will tell.

FYI, for those who think the new IAF will be completed in 2019, it has been delayed into ‘early 2020’ at a cost (now) of $830 Million.

The Port of Seattle admits that they still don’t have a tight control yet on the budget or timeline. I expect at least one more budget increase and delay.

That's odd that they're doing it in the middle of the day. I'd have expected them to do a RON, especially with the gate issues at SEA and them having a 737 shortage. To be honest, I think they should have added a mainline flight to EUG first, but I guess we'll see how this does first. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Redmond/Bend is popular for PNW tourists when it comes to hiking (during the summer) and skiing Mt. Bachelor. But it wouldn't surprise me to see this for EUG and MFR in the future. It could be another reaction to DL's SEA-RDM service.

With the recent news about WOW Air planning to start Iceland-Asia flights, I did some research on Great Circle Mapper and discovered that, for example, SEA-KEF-BOM, while not a direct route by any means, is shorter than other options on the route by at least 1,000 miles. For this example, I chose two routes to compare it to that I figured were other popular routings, via EWR (presumably on United) and via AMS (on DL/KLM).
Image
So I'm just throwing this out there, but with the success of LHLC's at SEA, the large Indian population in Seattle, the sky-high fares to Europe during peak season, and the fact that 4 A330-900s are being delivered and this route is also doable with a A321N, is WOW Air adding SEA-KEF a possibility in the near future?

To me, F9's ULCC business model of adding new routes using the "dartboard" model is fascinating, so I thought I'd sum up recent F9 service changes in SEA and GEG. Hope some of you find it interesting and useful.

-It's too early to know how SEA-COS and AUS are doing, but what I can say is that SEA-COS is ending for the season on August 9 (ditto for CLE), which is too soon IMO; they should have ended it around Labor Day, but they probably needed the airplane for another route

-SEA-AUS is showing up until the end of the schedule in November, so it might be going year-round.

-SEA-DEN still alternates from once to twice daily, and that terrible redeye still exists.

-GEG-DEN is showing up until the end of the schedule, and F9 is even sending the A321 on most, if not all of the flights which is great!

-To add on about GEG, I think LAS and PHX would be good considerations for additional routes if DEN is doing well.

-Just an anecdote, but my family and I have been searching for flights to LAS in October, and there's a big gap between NK that has fares around $120-$140 RT and AS, DL, and WN who consistently have fares in the $250-$380 RT range, so when F9 eventually turns their attention to LAS again in a future route announcement, I hope they add SEA-LAS to help bring the legacies' fares down, and to compete with NK who must be doing well on the route since they're putting the A321 on a few flights and are 3x daily.

Yeah I saw that too on FlightAware. Really glad it's a larger A321. And AA A321 GEG - PHX.

F9 back into GEG is off to a good start...at least based on load factors.

I actually flew them last Friday and DEN-GEG went out Y229/Y230. The return was Y192/Y230. F9 is seeing lower load factors on the return since it leaves GEG at 7:15pm and arrives into DEN at 10:45. Seeing 90%+ loads out of DEN.

Current plan is for season service. GEG really takes a dump in Jan, Feb.

F9 lease with GEG is month-to-month so not locked in to next summer.

Yeah I saw that too on FlightAware. Really glad it's a larger A321. And AA A321 GEG - PHX.

Don't forget that EI's inaugural DUB-SEA service starts tomorrow (Friday, 5/18)!

I'm really excited about this flight! Between Silicon Docks, the AS codeshare, and the large number of connections available to mainland Europe, I think it'll do really well. In case anyone's wondering, the flight number is EI 142 for SEA-DUB and EI 143 for DUB-SEA. I assume it'll either park at A or S, and use the CUTE check-in counters. After this, we also have MT launching SEA-MAN on May 27 to look forward to!

I’ve noticed lately that the DI flight LGW-SEA-LGW has been running late the last few weeks... about an hour late into SEA and about two late into LGW on each turn. The flight is generally heading along the Canadian border until the Great Lakes before taking the great circle. I’m assuming this is due to the current RR ETOPS issues on the 787, but upon looking at great circle map the route isn’t even really limited by 60 minute diversion, let alone the current 140 restriction. Is there another reason that they are taking this significantly longer route?
Just curious because I’m flying the route next week.

Norwegian flights are almost always late. And yes, it's mostly due to the 787 RR engine issues...

For the 99% of us that couldn't go to the inaugural ceremony for SEA-DUB I saw a coverage of it on Sea-Tac Airport's Instagram story and I'll give a synopsis of what happened. (Not including pictures because Airline Reporter will most likely cover it and make an article on it, like they did with AM, AF, and DY.)

-As expected, they have CUTE check-in space, with EI balloons and a poster set up to promote the new service.

-For this flight, they used gate A12, the second-to-last gate on the A concourse, I believe. Me thinks they had to block off A13 due to the A330's wingspan.

-The managing director of SEA, the Port of Seattle Commissioner, and the Consulate General of Ireland in San Francisco spoke at a podium that was set up in the terminal.

-There was an Aer Lingus-themed cake

I didn't hear about any goodies that were handed out, but I assume there was at least something given to passengers. Overall, seems like a nice, low-key launch for EI.

It was pretty neat, I had a break in work and took up post next to the fire engines for the inbound salute

Went up to the park just above the north employee parking lot to catch its arrival and take a few photos (not a.net quality). Flight was nearly 30 minutes early so glad I got there when I did.

AS is axing PSC and BLI-PDX after this summer. I didn't really see it coming, but the routes most likely mainly were for connecting traffic, which can be pushed through SEA now, so it's not a huge loss IMO.

Wenatchee - Seattle has 4 flights now, 3 on Saturday. Still no Government money for flights to San Francisco. The city / private investors should use their own money.

Inaugural MAN-SEA by MT is well underway. Not a "proper" MT configured aircraft but one of the Air Tanker A330s and is due 1344 local.

Congratulations to MT and SEA! However, the Air Tanker A330s don't have IFE, so that might dissuade some passengers. I'm curious about what percentage of the pax would be from SEA, and vice versa for MAN.

I would imagine that most passengers would be from the UK (somewhere between 75% and 90%). Virtually all of their MAN long-haul is based on UK passengers using the flights; the good news is that other destinations have "survived" the lack of IFE on the Air Tanker A330s but if the premium configured ones turn up, then those passengers will be pleasantly surprised.

I don't think so. The market is way too small. People at small airports dream a lot but in reality, they come to find out that "dream routes" don't work out. Remember Delta Connection Yakima, Washington - Salt Lake City didn't work out either. Delta / Skywest left town as soon as the Government subsidy ran out.

Went to go see it come in - they ended up doing a go-around, I think the traffic in front was too close. They were on final and about 4 miles out or so made a 90 turn to the west and came back into the pattern a few minutes later

I've never flown out of EAT, but I've picked up/dropped of a rental car there a few times and I was the only non-employee in the airport on both occasions. I can't imagine that it can support anything beyond the AS connection-oriented flights to SEA.
