The concourses themselves are going to be quite narrow, at least until you get to the rotunda. Picture the width of the current Concourse C, then cut it in half...each half will be the amount of walking space up and down the concourse, with retail and dining in the middle. It’s going to get very congested based on the pictures I’ve seen. On the positive side - there’s going to be a Chick Fil A.

And they'll probably be closed on the busiest travel day of the week. Should be Cane's or Popeye's if they're going to do fried chicken!

Ah snap, I totally forgot about that.

Another reason that that stupid business should've never gotten in before the former two.

I would prefer Cane's or Popeye's as well if I had a craving for chicken before a flight. I refuse to support Chick-Fil-A.

i just dont get why you would choose a business for an airport that doesnt open on sundays... canes isnt open for breakfeast so thats a strike against them for an airport too... that said when chik fil a is open it will be packed im sure... what terminal is it going in?

Has an updated list of restaurants been made public? I don't remember it as part of the original selection. It seems as though there was space for one or two in concourse A - has that been determined? It seems like being open every day would be a basic requirement for an airport restaurant when space is limited. I imagine there would be some pushback from New Orleans public, especially if it bypassed the formal selection process.

I just heard that Chick-fil-A is in and all of the John Besh-affiliated places (Pizza Domenica, Johnny Sanchez, etc) are out. Not sure what is replacing those.

Not surprised by the booting of the Besh-affiliated restaurants, but, I hope they aren't all replaced by fast food. One of the really nice things about this new terminal is that it was going to showcase a lot of great New Orleans food/restaurants.

That sucks. Love the Besh Restaurants...especially Pizza Domenica and August. As long as they are replaced by some other great places like Mondo or Cochon, I'll be fine with it.

Incorrect.

Cane's does offer breakfast in airport locations, and has done so since 2015.

SAT was the trial/launch market.

On a personal note re: Chick-Fil-A. I wasnt a huge fan of theirs but I find myself working with them and their owner operators a substantial amount of my time.

The CFA corporate structure is impressive, and their priorities don't get the positive attention their deserve. They have really high retention of employees, pay their employees well and consider it to be problematic is a operator has consistent turnover at his restaurant. The company cares about its owners and its employees, obviously not when a person's sexual preference or gender is at stake. But compared to other employers, I feel Chick-Fil-A pay is above average and their benefits to employees are as well. With regards to owner-operators. They are a mixed bag, but the average Chick-Fil-A operator cares about his employees and his customers a whole lot.

I write all these things from the point of view as an outsider that works with the company and operators in an service capacity.

yeah im sure they arent being replaced by fast food.. i bet the chik fil a was just another get.. theres additional space because of new terminal compared to what was advertised in the original rfp

I agree.. its just fast food. I am sure it will make a nice addition to the new airport and be very busy... but surprised that Canes being a local company of sorts isnt making a bigger push to be in there.

anyways, Im sure we will see the besh restauants replaced by other local things

Because in fast food, both the revenue per order and the profit margin per order, is wayyyyy lower for breakfast meals than it is for their all-day menu.

That's also why McDonald's resisted serving breakfast-foods beyond 10:30am for so many years; it's why Burger King, KFC, and Wendy's still won't do it; and why other fast food places don't serve breakfast at all.

Load on the westbound LHR-MSY is back to what we like to see: completely sold out in J, only 1 seat available in P, and only a handful available in Y.

February was scary, January was terrifying... but seems like this flight's doing justtttt fine again now. :)

one good thing about them approaching a full year of operation is BA will know which months they will have to offer cheaper prices to get plane full

Concourse A is a bit larger than I was thinking. It looks to be about the same size as the HOU expansion for WN INTL.

I do love the way the roof extension of the terminal building curves outward - looks a bit like a manta ray. I wish they would go ahead and build a mirror image of that on the opposite side, even if they don't do a full concourse there.

I still can't get a definitive conclusion on how many FIS gates there actually would be.

From even the current drawings, it could be 2, 4, or 5.

Tough to tell. :(

Meh, what good does that do you, if your arriving flight has to spend an extra 1-2hrs sitting on the apron waiting for an FIS-capable gate?

When I passed through the current FIS area a few months back, they had 2 Global Entry lanes in addition to maybe 10 normal lanes. They have a lot of lanes compared to the number of passengers per day that they pass through, but that's largely a relic of the era before Katrina and 9/11. From what I saw many months ago, the new area should be about the same capacity, though I've heard that the arrangement is different. I've still not seen anything that says there will be more than 6 gates on A, and that some of them will be configured for domestic traffic (two were originally dedicated for GLO and others like them after all). I don't see where that will be a major problem though. Currently, there is never a situation where there are more than two international planes at gates at the same time. About the only time that MSY would ever see that is in a special charter situation, or a mass diversion incident (of which, there was one about a year ago).

Oddly enough, New Orleans is actually even better able to handle that then they were. I learned a while back that there is now an FIS at Lakefront (KNEW) airport again. Supposedly, its small and mainly for business jets, but, in a pinch, Lakefront can handle most anything that's flying into KMSY as long as it isn't pushing it's MTOW. I wouldn't want to be the one standing in line there however.

Do we have the final rundown of which airlines are going in which terminal? Last I heard, many months ago...

A: AC, BA, CM, DE, G4
B: AA, AS, WN
C: DL, UA, NK

Not sure about B6 and F9...but I assume F9 could end up in A thanks to its low number of flights.

Also, I'm thinking it's possible A could see a few originating flights from AA/DL/WN since there won't be enough gates for all of the RON aircraft in their respective concourses.

It is 3 gates connected to the sterile corridor on the drawings posted back in December. Gates A1, A2, and A3 all have access to the corridor. That should be enough FIS capable gates for now.

Since there are three domestic gates available in A, I could see G4, AS, and F9 all end up there. UA is only leasing 5 gates now, so B6 could use that gate that UA gave up in C.

Heck, multiple UA Central American diversions into MSY just little while ago, January 16th to be precise.

No jet would ever be at MTOW at Lakefront, even on a diversion; so that point's moot.

BNA-SFO-58.1%, SFO-BNA-62.3%

BWI-SFO-74.0%, SFO-BWI-69.5%

Of course LFs are only part of the story, but encouraging that MSY is holding up nicely compared to other routes that were announced at the same time.

Those load factors can change drastically with frequency changes.

Examples would include removing weekend flights and having United cut back down to 1x daily on the medium market routes.

They have a good bit of buffer between them, and only rarely do delays cause even two to be at the gates unloading passengers at the same time. It should also be noted that, save for BA and Condor, the flights into MSY are narrowbodies. With the capacity that FIS currently has, those flights can be rapidly cleared. It's just not a big deal, and if it ever becomes one, the renovations required to convert one of the domestic gates won't be insurmountable. Scheduling wise, it's incredibly unlikely, excluding charters.

We can't roundly criticize government for overspending on things that they rarely or likely almost never need, then criticize them for not doing that in this position. Three gates is enough for almost anything forseeable in the near term. In the long term, if the airport is really running at such a high capacity that they absolutely have to have more capacity, there are more gates nearby that can be converted by extending the secure corridor. If the whole airport is gate constrained to that level, concourse A can be extended another 20-30% and then extended onto where the hardstand spots are just beyond A. Those plans are already on file.

>>>Not all diversions require deplaning and clearing the passengers. In the last few years, there has been ONE major diversion incident requiring passengers from multiple widebodies to be deplaned and cleared to be rebooked on other flights to other domestic destinations that was big enough to warrant any sort of publicity. Yes, there are occassional diversions. That's a given. But those diversions are very rarely on the scale that three gates won't be able to deal with it in a timely fashion. More gates would be nice, but it isn't essential.

LightningZ71 wrote:

They aren't ever going to do it, but, say another major incident such as 9/11 happens and they put everything down in the nearest airport, it could potentially be used if there was an issue with using KMSY (perhaps being too full, or there was a landing incident, etc).

I want the airport to grow as much as anyone. I'd love for there to be more gates, both domestic and international. The airport is lucky to have gotten the funding and capacity it has already. If they REALLY want to handle mass amounts of international charter flights without having to build out an additional concourse, they already have something that they are legally obligated to use for much of the next decade, old concourse D. They stated publicly that it will be used for charters. It's a MUCH less expensive project to just do minor renovations to make the whole thing able to be sterile enough for flexible operation as both a domestic and an international concourse. The only additional work would be to actually build an FIS area into it. The city already has cruise terminals that they only use once in a while, or seasonally, so this isn't without local precedent either.

From the Silver Airways thread, Silver has published an update to their "Branson" network that includes CVG-BKG-MSY(-CUN).

It's just BKG-MSY.

The route you are referencing is one that Orange Air dba Brason AirExpress flew for a time.

Nice to see Silver give MSY another shot. My guess is there is some type of subsidy involved for the BKG service. Wouldn't mind seeing EYW or RSW as one of the airports served from MSY.

Would be shocked if there wasn't. Especially without them preemptively adding a connector flight into their greater overall network

2017 full year domestic stats and international stats through September are below.

For the full year, WN's LAX route had the highest load factor at 93.8% and G4's PIE route had the lowest load factor at 68.4%. DL's ATL route continued to carry the most pax, but the route experienced a 5% decline in seats and pax from the previous year. The overall domestic load factor in 2017 was 81.5% for the year on the back of a decent 7% growth in seats and pax.

On the international front, AC saw a drop from 2016 in September with declines in seats, pax, and load factors year over year. CM had a drop in seats, but an increase in pax and load factor. BA had a solid month for the slow season with a load factor of 74.8%, and DE had a lower load factor of only 68.6% in September.

All of the international deplaned pax numbers for last year are incorrect. Hope they fix that soon. I'm friends with the C. Robinson that reviewed the report, so I'll make sure to tease her about it next time I see her.

Silver actually codeshares with almost everyone. They are particularly close with UA. For example you can already buy BKG-MSY-IAH/SFO and a few others, also BKG-MSY-SFO/SEA on AS. This is a reason I've been hoping they grow MSY - UA has been stagnant or shrinking at MSY, so 3M can help them fill seats and hopefully grow again - same for B6. Silver is also a rewards partner with UA and B6, so those FFs can earn and redeem on Silver flights.

I would bet that the BKG flights will continue to MCO to provide a one-stop option from Branson to Orlando - not only a big market and a target for the BKG folks, but a crew base for Silver. I think JAX is the next priority for them from MSY as it is usually over 50 PDEW even without a nonstop, might even be enough for twice daily. I don't know if it would fit into Silver's strategy, but I think TLH could be a nice add - they have no UA, AS, or B6 service, so they could use MSY to connect westward (not that far out of the way for BOS, JFK, IAD, EWR either), especially in the North Terminal.

I think a link to RSW or EYW would also do well. I don't see 3M only operating to BKG from here, so it will be interesting to see what links we get to the Florida network.
