I think WN had their shot right after UA de-hubbed to start many of the routes that they run out of PIT and CMH (especially leisure routes like TPA, RSW, MSY, etc), but the ULCC's jumped in faster. For example, instead of WN flying a daily to TPA, F9 does instead. Although WN has bulked up quite a bit in CLE in recent years, they had opportunities to do more (and still do).

It is because WOW isn't running in CLE/CVG over the winter (at least they aren't scheduled) and that's when the India flights start.

Just wanted to test my skills at linking to a pic! Here is the inaugural Icelandair flight on 16 May 2018: FI837 KEF-CLE, 737-Max8, TF-ICY "Latrabjarg"

It is so great to have this flight in cleveland and I look forward to taking it when the need arises, but it sure takes wee bit of getting used to, seeing a 737 that crosses the Atlantic.

Disappointingly seatguru doesn’t have Icelandair 737 max seat config loaded yet.

Wow--that's crazy--Iceland may not be a big winter destination, but both Cleveland and Europe are as business doesn't sleep because its cold outside----WW will cede all that traffic to FI who may keep it for good, given that they are pretty much the same price once you add all of WW's little fees.

Just checked with WOW customer service and they indicated that they are still working on the fall/winter schedules, so CVG/CLE should still be operating year-round.

According to Flightaware, Swiftair is running 763s CLE-PUJ today and tomorrow. That's a step up.

Ahhh... I saw that aircraft as my flight departed CLE this morning and thought it was too big to be a 757!

They had a fleet shortage and had to use a Dynamic 763...probably won't be around for too long, unfortunately.

Why would they paint it in full Swift Air colors (with Eastern titles too!) if it wasn't going to be around long??

This may shed some light. https://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news ... -air-lines . Especially the discussion pertaining to Kenneth Wooley who happens to own 38.75% of Swift and owns Dynamic

Per the FAA the 767-300 that arrived as well as 2 additional 767-300's and 3 767-200's are registered to Eastern Airlines LLC.

They sent a second aircraft to CLE, a 767-200 out of MIA last night, which departed CLE this morning to PUJ as WQ470. The 763 that arrived as WQ471 may still be here.

Not sure who handles Swift, but do they have equipment to regularly handle wide-body containers or did they borrow if from another carrier? Did they use gate A14? Wonder what the loads were?

The 762 was parked on A14 overnight and was in Dynamic's "standard" red and white livery (N767DA). I did not see the 763 from the other day at the airport this morning.

471 flew back from PUJ at FL200 so I assume it has some mechanical issues which is why the 762 flew up last night.

What I originally meant wasn’t that Eastern wouldn’t be around for long (who knows what the future holds for this confusing recent history of rebranding and creating charter airlines in the Caribbean and Sunbelt) but that the 767s will probably go back to 737s as soon as possible.

From enilria's weekly reader:

WW DTW-KEF NOV 0>0.6 DEC 0>0.5 JAN 0>0.5
WW LAX-KEF SEP 0.7>1.0 OCT 0.5>0.7 NOV 0>0.7 DEC 0>0.6 JAN 0>0.7
WW ORD-KEF OCT 0.6>0.9 NOV 0.6>1.0 DEC 0.5>0.9 JAN 0.5>1.0
WW PIT-KEF NOV 0>0.6 DEC 0>0.5 JAN 0>0.5
WW SFO-KEF SEP 0.7>1.0 OCT 0.5>0.7 NOV 0>0.6 DEC 0>0.5 JAN 0>0.5
WW STL-KEF NOV 0>0.4 DEC 0>0.4 JAN 0>0.4

Is this WW's winter schedule extension? CVG and CLE aren't listed. I always thought CLE-KEF was seasonal for WW, but when I looked, I couldn't find it in writing. This perhaps makes it official. FI has always said they will be year round, which may eventually decide who's the winner on this route.

Sure hope FI survives year round. $581 RT in August to AMS. We need this!!! Interesting UA was at $776 (low for them) and DL at $830 (basic e).

Kelly said during the earnings conference call that WN was holding capacity in reserve to begin Hawaiian flying on short notice and there would be few additions anywhere else unless HI looked as if it might not happen this winter. So any CLE additions before next summer (2019) would be a nice surprise.

I'm always the naysayer on WN at CLE but their actions for years have said it is a trivial market for them-- not sure why now would be any different, even apart from Hawaii.

PIT and CMH have better service from WN. Adding the fifth gate in B and shutting down CAK (let alone the UA hub closure) really didn't do as much as I and others on this forum had hoped for.

Here is an article published on Oct 31, 2017 that stated that WN is already considering adding service to FLL and HOU from CLE: https://www.cleveland.com/travel/index.ssf/2017/10/whats_next_for_cleveland_hopki.html

If WW doesn't serve CLE year-round, I agree, they will have ceded most of the market to WW. If WW doesn't serve CLE, I hope FI goes 7x/week. It will also make it easier for another carrier to serve AMS/FRA/CDG/etc. 7x/week.

The FIS seems to be getting bad-mouthed pretty roundly by local users, although I've been in some real dumps (Rome!!!) and looong bleak corridors (IAD) and mob scenes (almost any big int'l airport). Is anybody familiar enough with the lower level of CLE to say whether B1/B3 could be converted to a workable FIS cheaply? DL could perhaps share B3 as needed

There is less room under B1/3 than A11/14 by a lot. The past idea of putting a new FIS under C would work far better.

When oh when is a new terminal going to be part of the civic dialogue, rather than patchwork solutions to the many, many shortcomings of the airport, including but not limited to FIS.

Heck even the Clowns, I mean the Browns ownership has floated the idea that they will need to replace the late 1990's stadium with a brand new one in about 10 years. A challenging financial/tax environment isn't stopping Browns ownership from at least floating the need out to the community.

That's why I wondered if anything could be done quickly and cheaply. With the master plan coming in a couple years, I'm assuming it will point the way to a replacement terminal. in the mid-20s.

The Cleveland terminal situation needs to be broken down into 4 issues.
1. Restroom renovation (no new terminal needed)
2. Shuttle drop off (can be re-accomodated on regular drop off roads and valet moved to current shuttle area)
3. International Terminal moved to Concourse D --with a road on the east side to pick up arriving passengers. Departing passengers
use the main terminal. Plenty of room for customs etc. This would be like Atlanta/O'hare
4. Additional parking to be accommodated at Brookpark and Purtis RTA stations and lots (expanded)-with the RTA being fully utilized by
the airport.

While this will cost money to renovate "D" and put a front face on it -a separate International terminal would be great. The RTA offers great opportunity as
Hotels also can be added to the lot area by the RTA stops and tear down the airport Sheraton.

Terminal D, or at least it’s equivalent capacity, isn’t needed anymore. Yeah sure it’s the newest but it’s pushing 25 years old. An international terminal is and will always be overkill for cleveland.

The footprint to have modern restrooms isn’t there. They are punier than movie theater bathrooms by a mile.

I grant that a master plan in couple years will hold a lot of answers but there’s no reason the dialogue can’t be started now. Civic and business leaders are in denial, as it’s never on the political or civic agenda.

I hate spending a nickel making the idiotic ground transportation center more lasting.

Exactly right. Haslam's $1bn investment is worth $2bn based off the Panthers sale + what he made in the past few years. Surely, there's $100m a year to squirrel away for 10 years for a new joint + the league $$ that is given. I think his personal approach really rubs people the wrong way and it will be more likely to fail until he's out.

Back to the airport, if another "mainland TATL carrier comes into the mix next year, I don't see how FI, WW, charters and that carrier can use the same facility. While may be planned to be different landing times, that doesn't always work and it would be a nightmare with 2-3 planes full. But, look back at the 10 or 15 years of this thread and you'll see we've been saying that for year, so what do we know?

Not to mention the fact that all international GA aircraft use the same customs facilities. If they do happen to arrive when one of the air carriers are being processed, it could be a very lengthy delay.

]Speaking of int'l arrivals and needs of FIS at CLE, could someone clarify something about t-100 for me?

Year Month US Gateway Foreign Gateway carrier Scheduled Charter Total
2017 3 CLE CUN F9 7479 0 7479
2017 3 CLE CUN UA 2647 0 2647
2017 3 CLE PUJ EE 0 123 123
2017 3 CLE YYZ 13Q 0 2 2
2017 3 CLE YYZ C5 1816 0 1816
2017 3 CLE YYZ DL 0 40 40
2017 3 CLE YYZ ZX 6129 0 6129
2017 3 CLE ZRH CAZ 0 4 4

TOTAL 2017-March 18240

Looking at one -month---March 2017, the total pax were 18,240. Is that pax in BOTH directions? If so, that would mean 18,240 less 7,987 (YYZ) = 10,253, divided by 2 for about 5,100 pax cleared at Hopkins FIS. Please confirm! Thanks.

Does anyone know if CLE FIS has global entry?

Anyone out there have early reads on how Icelandair and WOW are doing? 100% anecdotal on my part but I'm noting in July WOW fares from Cleveland are substantially higher than PIT fares. Whether that's because planes are full-- who the heck knows.

^According to this list, CLE has global entry kiosks. https://www.cbp.gov/travel/trusted-trav ... /locations

I'm interested as well to know how FI and WW are doing. Hopefully all flights are packed in both directions!

^Why--is that a rumor? They already serve BWI-CLE. I'd much rather see MCI-CLE as that's a route with real demand and no service.

DCA-CLE seems completely random to me. I don't think loads are anything fantastic with the existing players on the route. Plus over the years WN has reduced frequencies CLE to BWI, so it doesn't appear to be an ace in the hole route for them.

The above is from a few days ago. Anyone able to respond to it? If not, I can ask on the general board, but as its CLE-focused, thought I'd ask here first....

The airport's own figure for March international arrivals AND departures was 18,208, so I'd say the feds number is for total traffic both ways.

^Massey--thanks. So that means, excluding YYZ for pre-clearance, 5,100 people processed at the by CBP at CLE. Divided by 30, that's only 170/day.... Was just trying to understand CLE's lack of movement on the new FIS. 170/day isn't that many people, of course that 170/day will be higher in summer, plus we now have WW/FI, plus the secret third TATL carrier in 2019.

^Looking at Cleveland's two other airports on T-100, not a lot of pax. For ALL of 2016 (direction-agnostic):

BKL: 230
CAK: 62

BKL has immigration (CPB) capabilities, not sure about CAK. But CAK's one flight was to or from YUL--so if it was a CAK arrival, pax would have pre-cleared at YUL. It was on ExpressJet---maybe it was a diversion.

If you think the airport FIS is bad, things could get worse. Mrs Brown and I are taking a St. Lawrence Seaway cruise that clears US customs in Cleveland. I believe the "facility" is an Army surplus tent near Dock 28. I'll let you know how *that* goes. :D

Airline conference Jumpstart will be held in Cleveland for three days next week. Thirty airlines are known to be attending. Why? Said the head of the Airports Council International, "That's one reason we picked Cleveland, because they've done a great job of recovery. My other answer is 'Why not?' It's a great city and it's easy to get to."

Airport folks are meeting with 7 airlines that already fly to CLE, plus Alaska and Lufthansa.
