That seems to make sense, as right now, the locals are looking for discounts. But we may see more business travel if WTI remains as high as it is...

Are they? I mean I guess everyone is technically looking for a discount but Houston is not a discount market. NK and F9 tend to thrive in markets that have larger domestic O&D. That makes the domestic garbage fare market bigger.

Look at NK's Central American experiment. They got their rears handed to them by UA.

Another thing I am keeping my eyes on has to do with domestic operations.

Something that grinds my gears has to do with the use of E145's to markets like IND, CMH, CLE, etc. What Im looking for UA to do is perhaps reduce the frequency and up the equipment. Instead of flying 5X daily on a route like IAH-CLE with four of the flights being E145's, why not make it 4x daily on E175's? That makes more sense to me anyway.

I don’t know about YX, but YV can barely handle what flying they have now..

Good information. This makes sense as to why there hasn't been more expansion.

Has anyone heard any updates about the new D and what is going on with old C North?

Also has the new B North been shelved for now?

Nope, I haven’t heard any news concerning over the new MLIT. Last I heard, the rebidding was successful and it was scheduled to start at the end of 2017 or start of 2018.

Though the link above does not specify the route (it is being formerly announced on Monday), a quick search on united.com shows that United is adding a route from Houston (IAH) to Dayton (DAY). It looks as though it will begin with a daily ERJ145 between the 2 airports.

Yep, were getting IAH-DAY and IAH-CAK. Someone at UA must have been reading this thread! ;)

IAH-DAY makes worlds of sense. Im more skeptical of IAH-CAK.

Interesting, I would have thought new routes would focus on Houston's immediate catchment area, routes for which IAH is best suited to capture new connecting flows for UA's network.
I think IAH serves two main purposes in UA's network, US to Latin America and east/west in the South and Gulf Coast area. Domestic expansion in Florida could feed resumptions in smaller Texas markets, and with United's statements that domestic travel is more profitable than international, Houston, Denver, and Chicago, all mid-continent hubs, would be best placed to grow UA's underwhelming domestic presence (for its size).
Memphis at only 4 regional jets a day? MEM-IAH-beyond would be a great option for many passengers, but UA doesn't have enough connecting seats to connect passengers onto (a problem at all of its hubs).
I could become the LH617 of IAH and United, and complain, but UA does seem to have shrunk in IAH since the merger.
What they should do is grow around 20% domestically, growing ORD to 70,000 daily seats, IAH to 65,000, and DEN 50,000.
Specifically in Houston, they should add.
Key West: 3x week E170
San Angelo: 13x week E145
Wichita Falls: 13x week E145
Waco: 20x week E145
Madison: 6x week CRJ700
Evansville: Daily E145

Increasing popular destinations like LAS, PHX, LAX, and Florida from IAH (and other hubs) on efficient narrowbodies like the 737-10 ( I still wish they had chosen the A321 though) will boost connecting traffic to small (currently AA monoply) markets, and grow the hub in a virtuous cycle.
Florida traffic is a huge component of most airport's O/D yet United has a very small presence in Florida, behind JetBlue and maybe even Spirit. Houston is the perfect hub domestically to serve connections from much of the west to Florida, and there seem to be opportunities in markets like Fort Myers (served only once daily this summer, or the Gulf Coast, in Houston's shadow geographically).
Mainline RONs anyone to MEM, ELP, ABQ, TUL...? Grow in nearby destinations and gain buisness share to become the airline of choice for the region.
Growth, but still, UA knows the demand better than I do, MUCH BETTER

Just thoughts,

Southwest also already serves both HOU and DAL nonstop from MEM, and Southwest could also add nonstop service from MEM to DEN, PHX, and LAS in order to connect passengers to destinations west of the Mississippi from MEM. Southwest can also connect passengers to AUS, SAT, MAF, ELP, ABQ, PHX, LAX, and SAN from MEM through both HOU and DAL, and in addition to that, Southwest can connect passengers to HRL, CRP, PVR, SJD, MEX, and CUN from MEM through HOU.

In addition to UA MEM-IAH nonstop service, WN MEM-HOU nonstop service, and WN MEM-DAL nonstop service, AA also serves its DFW and PHX hubs from MEM, UA also serves its DEN hub nonstop from MEM, F9 serves its DEN home base nonstop from MEM, and DL serves its MSP and LAX hubs nonstop from MEM, and there are options other than the UA MEM-IAH nonstop service for connecting to destinations west of the Mississippi River from MEM.

UA's next add should be BRU, it gives more needed connectivity to Africa than any other Star Hub which is useful for when oil prices creep up.

I'd expect Houston-Lagos to resume eventually, it will probably be in the long term, but even with Scott Kirby's stated intentions to shift growth to domestic, UA has announced or begun quite a few long haul, high ASM routes, LAX-SIN, IAH-SYD, SFO-MUC. Internationally, though, I think Lagos/Africa is the most likely to resume/launch from IAH. UA should focus on strengthening IAH by increasing capacity on high-volume Florida routes, leveraging TX's location for east/west flows in the South and Southwest. ATL for DL and CLT for AA are built on high volume traffic to Florida, lower yield, of course, but built on scale, UA through IAH could work similiarly.
It's interesting to note that UA is relatively a longer stage length east/west airline, AA and DL are a little more north/south short haul focused.

UA has a quite small Florida presence for its size, and expansion into Florida will help balance out its higher seasonality. Regionally, they could increase their Houston business market strength by launching such destinations as Waco, Montgomery, San Angelo, and Tallahassee. Of course, all expansion nowadays is dependent on having enough pilots, but UA seems confident thery can staff their regional operators, extending their ExpressJet contract for example.

Brussels was served in the past before the terrorist attack I think.

Does anyone have updated information on when the IAH Terminal D re-construction will commence? I was in and out of D last week, and saw nothing to indicate it was starting. I thought now that the new C North terminal was done, they would start demolishing the old C North gates and break ground. What gives?

As stated in another thread, Atlas/Sonair is ending the Houston Express route. Come March, IAH is out of the 6 continent club. I'd love to see UA resume LOS or ET or SA start a 5th freedom from somewhere on the continent. The large oil markets in Africa are LOS, CAI, LOS, LAD, and SSG. These would be the best shots for 5th freedom flights.

TWA772LR, I too think IAH will get some sort of n/s African service in the next 24-36 months. On my AF flights to and from Paris last week, it seemed that 30-40% of the passengers were flying under African ( mainly West African) passports. I've also seen decent numbers of African transfer passengers using LH and BA as well. I don't know the daily passenger numbers from IAH to Africa, but I'd assume it must be decent. SAA would be smart to fly a JNB-ABJ-IAH or JNB-ACC-IAH run if they got fifth freedom, however their business model is a crazy mess right now, and I don't think they have the aircraft to support a new long range route.

At this stage, a nonstop flight to African from IAH will depend heavily on 5th freedom rights. They are going to have to be able to tap two markets at once like SQ does at IAH or it wont work at this time.

Interestingly enough, I guess this is the first time AC itself has flown to IAH since, when, the 1990s after the TPG buyout?

I just flew IAH to DOH, lot of people going to DAR, NBO, and LOS. That sucks right after SYD started, Sonair pulled the plug, and IAH is kicked out the club lol. There banners around IAH saying we fly to 6 continents....

I am sure Air France is happy with those loads to Africa, cause Air France is one most struggling carriers out of Terminal D out of the wide body carriers.

I really hope Ethiopian Airlines launches a flight in the end of this year, if not the next. It would bring us back to 6 continents. I believe we are the next NA destination for ET.

ET will only make since from IAH IF it can route through LOS or ABJ. If its going to route through DUB, its pointless.

Agree with you re DUB. 4 years ago it was to be ACC, 2 years LFW. ABJ wasn’t even an option until recently. Regardless if the flight doesn’t land in LOS, there better be a reliable connection to it. Combined with connections to LAD and SSG would be even better—the problem being the inbound/outbound timings don’t work both ways.

If ET is more interested in barbell connections though, West Africa is a good ways out of the way and nearly impossible to time right for connecting banks on both ends without a good amount of time on the ground in Houston. MAD is literally on the great circle route and they probably would lose the same amount of money on that. LOS (or LAD) works well as a stopover from JNB.

About those banners (they are gone now, replaced HLS&R Rodeo banners). Did anyone (who either uses Will Clayton as a shortcut to Beltway 8 or flies frequently) note that when those banners were first put up in November after Thanksgiving (well before the Sonair announcement), that a banner showing Africa was missing? Also of note, was that the Middle East had its own banner and not part of the Asia banner and yet the lead banner was promoting the "6 Continent" services, I thought it rather interesting. They were temporarily removed and replaced by Christmas banners and returned after the holidays.

According to the HAS website, they are still there. If B6 had indicated that it was cutting HOU, trust me, there would have been a thread posted here almost at the moment that it was announced.

Mar: 4.3% / 1.7%

Apr: 10.8% / 8.8%

No, the maximum number of flights they operated was 4--2 each to JFK and BOS. They're now down to 1 to each, so a very, very small station for B6.

I confirmed on T100.

B6 started HOU in Sept 2006 with 2 A320 flights to JFK.

By Feb 2007 it became 1 A320, 2 E190.

By Apr 2007 it was 2 E190.

The A320 was reintroduced on 1 flight for May-Jun and Sep-Oct 2008. From May-Aug 2009 it was 2x A320. Until BOS started in Sep 2013, it was off and on A320-E190 mix.

BOS started Sep 2013 with 2 flights and all flights were E190.

Both routes were 2x daily until Oct 2014, when BOS went to 1x daily and JFK stayed at 2x daily.

JFK went to 1x daily in Jan 2015.

Since Feb 2016 both routes have mostly been 1x daily A320.

FLL was never served.

The only route other than BOS and JFK that B6 served on a scheduled basis was a single flight to PVD in Feb 2017, I'm sure for Patriots fans to fly to the Super Bowl in Houston.

Strong YOY growth in seats for UA for 1H 2018. Flights also increasing too at a slower clip so not purely upgauging.

WN will be starting HOU-SJC nonstop service on April 8th and HOU-SDF nonstop service on October 3rd. WN will also be extending HOU-CMH nonstop service to daily year-round nonstop service, with HOU-CMH nonstop service resuming on October 3rd.

Here are my predictions for WN expansion at HOU within the next year:
  • WN bringing back HOU-PHL nonstop service (There is enough demand for WN to bring back HOU-PHL nonstop service with the O&D demand for HOU-PHL being almost as big as that of DAL-PHL).
  • WN bringing back daily year-round nonstop service to LBB from HOU (LBB is one of the top destinations traveled to from HOU that doesn't have daily year-round nonstop service from HOU, and the demand is also clearly there with connecting opportunities to Florida, New Orleans, and international destinations).
  • WN adding nonstop service to CVG, CLE, and SMF from HOU
  • WN adding a 3rd daily nonstop to SAN from HOU
  • WN extending HOU-SEA and HOU-PDX nonstop service to year-round
  • WN adding nonstop service to PUJ from HOU (I am surprised that WN hasn't already added HOU-PUJ nonstop service with HOU being one of WN's main international gateways)

Here are my additional predictions for WN expansion at HOU within the next 2-3 years:
  • WN adding nonstop service to BUR, DTW, MSP, ONT, and SFO from HOU
  • WN extending HOU-SLC and HOU-TUS nonstop service to daily year-round nonstop service
  • WN bringing back HOU-EWR nonstop service if demand is there for additional HOU-NYC nonstop service
  • WN adding nonstop service to additional international destinations from HOU

If WN is going to start any route from HOU, I would love to see a nonstop flight to ONT after UA cancelled theirs.

I'd love to see a return to IAH for selfish reasons.

Me too. Conecting via DEN/SFO bites big time... but not as much as to SNA and dealing with the 55/91 traffic :banghead: :biting:

Not sure what's driving the close-in changes but the YV pilot shortage may be driving much of it.

Still, strongest growth in years.

As long as Kirby's "allowed" to do what he wants to do, that'll be the case for the next 3 years. If not, well, then I'm sure stagnation will return unless another hub is closed.

Lets hope that Kirby will continue to be allowed to do what he wants to do then.
