I actually thought some of China Eastern's A343s are gone already (their pilots mentioned this when they sent the bird to storage). I'm not in LDE though, so could anyone confirm this?

Also I thought the two oldest Finnair birds are there for scrapping as well.

The Air Berlin A330-200s will be heading over Virgin Atlantic early next year. I think we have one A340-600 leaving the fleet as well from Virgin Atlantic.

TC-JOC was actually written off less than a year into service.

American's A330-300s are reaching Golden Oldie status. It's all relative, of course, but they go back to the early oughts, when transat ops with them were a novelty. They also have Pratt engines, which were less popular with that bird.

There is talk that the influx of A350s will hasten their AA demise, but what if the latter are not taken up? Will AA let them soldier on? I can't imagine much of a used market for them.

BTW I went out of my way to ride one last week for the first time. It's a nice sleek bird and looks good in the AA livery, but every time we hit a dip in the runway or taxiway, the center overheads would rattle like a plastic chandolier. It's a uniquely A330 experience.

I wonder if similar to how NW flew DC-10’s until 2007or2008 if an airline can pick up some low cycle A340’s and fly them as long as fuel is cheap.

The A330 with the long exhaust cones are my favorite. Flew on Qatar Airways Olympics livery back in 2005. Cleanest plane ever.

VS's G-VNAP is no longer stored, it's in MNL being readied for service re-entry. One of the ex-MU 346's B-6055 is also out of storage, it went recently to AUH presumably for overhaul, but I haven't read about it's fate from there.

Also, you can take D-AIGY off your list of stored A340's as this one is currently in Rome being prepared for Eurowings service entry.

VH-EBI will become a KC30A for RAAF next year.

It's getting crowded in Twente:

AELS “taking off” at Twente Airport

AELS will welcome 3 aircraft at Twente Airport in January for disassembly, one Boeing 747 and two Airbus A340s. Air France will fly two A340-300s, one on the 19th and the other on the 22nd to AELS. The former KLM aircraft PH-BFF will also make its last flight on the 22nd of January. The flight of the Boeing 747-400 will be executed by KLM on behalf AELS, the new owner of the airframe. All three aircraft will be disassembled by AELS according to the highest environmental standards. Weather conditions might cause the flight to be delayed or rescheduled.

These are planes that are 18+ years old, with sharply declining values due to them being 4 engined, difficult to refit as freighters and likely due for a major check anyway so scrapping is the only financially sound choice to do.

I'm surprised that F-GLZR didn't transfer over to Joon. I also notice that the A343s that still have significant resale or lease value are the ex-SQ ones with a higher MTOW of 275t.

BTW, does anyone know what happened to JY-AIC and JY-AID? These two were MSN 14 and 22.

Two of Air France's A340's will be scrapped in Twente, The Netherlands. AELS will receive the on 19 January ( F-GLZI , 1995 build ) and 22 January ( F-GLZR , 1999 build ). These will be the 2nd and 3rd A340 the company scrapes, the first one was a former Swiss a/c last year.

Glad to say that flew on F-GLZR over the summer from DTW-CDG, nice ride with no rattling. All that aircraft needed was just a little TLC.

Fuel may be cheap(ish) but unfortunately maintenance isn't. It is still a large part of the cost of flying. Those high-thrust CFM56s need lots of love.

I'm pretty sure that's why the 2 TS 332s are there. They're parked during the winter and brought back into service for the peak transatlantic season.

On 03Feb2018 Airbus A-340-313X LV-CSF (msn 128) completed its last commercial flight, AR1133 MAD - EZE. Sister A-340-313X LV-CSD (msn 123), has been out of service since Dec 2017 and will be returned shortly to the lessor to be parted out. AR is down to only two active A340s, LV-FPU and LV-FPV.

You seem offended. Why? I simply shared a different experience in non-offending wording, which seems to be a reasonable approach in a forum.

On the topic: No, they won't be ageing backwards. However ageing for a modern turbofan is very relative. As is maintenance cost development. Over the years, most wear and tear components would have been replaced multiple times already. Especially hot section airfoils, combustion chamber liners, etc.. Consequently, apart from inflation and normalized for LLPs, which aren't the largest factor in long haul engines, cost musn't really go up dramatically, if at all. Especially if you factor in the sheer amount of surplus parts coming from tear down engines of disassembled A/C.
Hence, I simply doubt that CFM56-5C maintenance cost is the driver to retire those old 343s.

But as always, I could be wrong.

2020 IIRC. Yes, they were the only two that had their interiors and on board entertainment brought up to the A330 fleet standards, as all along they have been the two frames the airline intended to hold on to until it decides on the new type for the long haul fleet.

I think so. AR today announced it is increasing MAD to 10x w and there is no way they can meet the schedule without these 2 A343s. - which will continue to fly to MAD only, on the late evening flight. New day flight (leaves EZE @ 12:20 PM, arriving MAD super early around 6 AM) will be on the A332s.

Here's a pic taken earlier this week showing the last 4 340s @ AR's EZE maintenance base. LV-CSD & SF are awaiting their return to the lessor, while LV-FPU & PV (the latter with its Skyteam livery) await their new flights that evening.
