Video of DL 744 low-pass over MSP

Wed Dec 20, 2017 9:42 pm

This is not my video, but this was posted to an MSP spotters FB group this afternoon.

This is one of the coolest aviation-related things I've ever seen. And it definitely was not at 2000 ft, like the initial report indicated.

Very nice thanks for posting. Personally I don’t think it can compare to the final L1011 ATL flyover (gear up)

NW, and DL, operated the 747 (safely right?) for 45+ continuous years. MSP is where the fleets were purchased, where training occurred, many flights originated, and where many/most of those crews and ex corporate employees still must live today.

The 747 visit, and proud climb out of the aircraft, are a positive symbol of this rich history.

Must have added an extra ‘0’ because you’re right, that certainly looked closer to 200 feet.

It did a pass over the city 2,000 ft AGL. Started by overflying the airport northbound at 4,000 MSL then descended while overflying the city and then joining the downwind for the first approach captured in the video above.

I had heard there was supposed to be one, as well. Not sure if it happened farther out over Minneapolis, or if it never happened.

The pass at MSP was a go-around... gear down on approach, then gear up. The 2K AGL pass was over the city.

All due respect, you're kidding yourself if you think this is the case.

Well known that this is a final tour - this was Delta's version .

I agree that they should have done the same thing with the 747 that they did with the L10. I don't know the details, but it was probably done this way because there were pax on board?

Nice video but gear down, really?
I like South American and African low passes. Gear up, very fast and very low. Americans and (some) Europeans seem to be scared and always do slooow, boooring passes.

Anyway, at least it's good to see the Queen being enjoyed before being retired. That's a beauty for sure.

There is always a critic. I for one who flew LAX Asia 22 times on NW 747's enjoyed the video immensely.

The plane passed over us, we were on the end of the landing runway 12R in the dog park spotting location, at 2000 feet during its initial approach and flyover of the airport from west/sw to east/ne before it did a downwind leg over St. Paul and Mpls and began the missed approach maneuver to 12R. It was all fantastic.

There’s a pretty decent United 747 low pass in Frankfurt buried someplace deep in the Internet. Complete with wing wag.

Why is the number 2 engine, noticeably smokier than the others?

Have noticed this before on UA B744's, but don't recall seeing it on non US registered B744's with PW4000's.

WOW! It's the end of an era. Amazing aircraft, even more amazing to think that I've been flying in 747s since 1970. I've stopped wearing the sack cloth and ashes regarding the 748i, did get to fly in a Korean aircraft last year. But I guess it's time. The queen is dead. Long live the king. Thanks for the posting.

Very nice and graceful. I only have the pleasure of flying on one once several years ago from HNL to ATL. N676NW I think it was.

We were supposed to do the same in ATL after take-off that morning, loop around and do a fly-by before heading to MSP. The weather did not cooperate.

Not to be blunt but Americans and Europeans tend to have a safety orientation, it comes from placing a value on human life ;)

Invitees were probably in the pax cabin, as they were in the TriStar final pass over ATL, but my logic for calling it a missed approach/GA is that only tower permission would be needed for a MA/GA (but gear must be down passing over the threshold), rather than ATC special permission for a low, gear-up pass over the Twin Cities (or a low, gear-up pass over an active runway).

ATCsundevil or other ATC, correct me if I'm wrong.

No pilot asks permission to do a missed approach or go around. They do it if they need to, or do it if they're ordered by ATC. And when they do such a procedure, it's generally a go-around thrust maneuver, to get the heck out of there. It's not a leisurely pass over the runway.

Ok..... Non pilotS. ATC is NEVER allowed to let pilots break the rules. Fly bys with a plane over 12,500 are prohibited by US FARs. Gear/flaps down shooting a practice approach is allowed. Nuff said. Look it up if you are a nay sayer/flamers non pilot. Just a fact. Great low approach. Good practice.. Remember. Pilots control the sky's, ATC helps direct the traffic. Proof? How man hours do pilots have without ever using ATC? I have thousands. Now, how many hours does ATC have directing air traffic with no plane in the sky....ZERO...

I am direct and I admit it. Other countries have different rules ....great. This is what it is in the US, so this is what it is...
My wife is an ATC controller and pilot so ATC, don't try to spout off. We know the big picture. ATC in 1000% essential, but I have 2 planes with out radios. Never will have radios and always legal FAR wise, and I fly them all the time.

ATC aids pilots. ATC cannot tell a pilot to break FARs. Emergency is the only way to have an "excuse" to breach an FAR. You Better have a valid excuse too. I love ATC. I use them when I need and I know when and where I can fly with out them .

Great Retirement flight. I wish I did the flying but had to bid off prior to the last flight. Great pilots were left to fly it and they are living up to the planes reputatuon. Nothing better!

Naysayers and flamers, cleared for attack! I will not respond.

Well a couple posts prior there's some real deep you know what. But its not worth addressing directly as it appears the person has run and hid. Anyway, as a group, can anyone find the FAR referencing fly by's and aircraft weighing more than 12,500 lbs? If I could see it for myself maybe I'd quit the airshow act at work with pax on board.

Thanks for posting the video. I retired from NWA Dec. 2005 as a B744 Captain. After retirement I noticed I often had sleep problems with dreams of difficulty commuting to work. Loved the video as it brings back all of those hours on that wonderful plane. Hope it doesn't bring back the commuting dreams too.

Agreed, my point is an intentional low pass, gear up, over an active runway would need tower permission, at least in the US. A "practice approach"/"missed approach", gear and flaps down, would not need the special permission, although I'm sure MSP tower and flight deck were talking.
