Horizon Air CEO stepping down after troubled year

Wed Dec 20, 2017 7:04 pm

After a year of turmoil at Horizon Air, the regional carrier that’s part of Alaska Air Group, the airline’s Chief Executive Dave Campbell announced that he’s stepping down. Campbell conveyed the news internally via an email to employees Monday.

“As the year comes to a close, I have found myself at a crossroads,” Campbell wrote. “For personal reasons, I have decided to step down from my role with Horizon effective January 5, opening the door for a new chapter for the airline.”

Campbell only took the job in May 2016. AAG had already appointed some new leadership including a new VP of Ops at Horizon earlier this fall, so this clears the way for a new CEO to come in as well and provide largely a new leadership slate.

The meltdown QX had this year was one of the largest in the history of regional airlines.

Although I can't really blame him for it (Horizon's failure to attract pilots is a structural problem) someone had to be the scapegoat. Hopefully AAG respects the pilots more going forward.

I’d say sell off Horizon Air to Skywest and consolidate all AS regional operations under Skywest if Horizon is that big of a mess.

Would SkyWest maintain the QX brand a la EV if they were to be acquired?

I'm confused how the "Horizon debacle" is really most of Horizon's fault? Horizon has been trying, for years, to operate as efficiently as possible, and in the end, its Alaska and their shareholders who judge Horizon. Usually Horizon looks like it's losing money for the sake of Alaska's numbers. Horizon once had an amazing reputation in the pacific northwest both for customer service and as an employer. Now, it seems, Alaska has turned Horizon into your typical everyday "express" regional carrier with no real identity or great former brand traits... That may be cheaper for AAG, but in the end they've ruined a great asset and brand.

Skywest is some of the most expensive regional lift in the industry. Horizon is a mess because AS has disrespected it for decades.

No, there is no need to. It would just be Alaska operated by SkyWest as it is today.

Horizon is actually more expensive than SkyWest even with SkyWest being on the high end. Horizon has cost issues across the board which they are working on and starting to see positive movement on cost.

Dave came on shortly after I started at QX and he struck me as a genuine guy. Too bad he’s getting the boot (whether by his choice or not), it wasn’t entirely his fault that QX performed dreadfully this past year. I wish him luck, though.

I am hopeful that new leadership will help bring QX back to stability. This airline is a gem, and I would love to see it continue to be my go to for short trips around the PNW.

I remember the shock when Horizon went from feeding United in SEA to being bought by Alaska Air.

Horizon is not more expensive than Skywest.

Skywest's lift with AS is damn expensive. They merely use it to create whip-saw pressure against QX. AA/Eagle demonstrated that costs get out of control if you have too much centralized lift.

I'll point out that AAG executives including Dave have stated that Horizon is more expensive than SkyWest on multiple occasions. When you look at cost per block hour you see that Horizon is more expensive.

Expensive or not, if you don't have the lift, it doesn't matter what the cost is. And as DL and AA are demonstrating, they're quickly centralizing lift again to carriers they own and can control.

I can remember Horizon from the beginning, I remember Cascade CZ & Air Oregon JT. I know Horizon has had a varied fleet of props & jets throughout it's history. I can vaguely remember the DC-9's, but the F-27 & F-28's stick out in my head & their short lived Dornier aircraft were my favorite prop that they have flown. The United tie in, locked in UA as the big wheel in both SEA & PDX, my how times have changed since those days.

QX had DC-9's? I thought so...but (1) I have not seen any pics, and (2) many have said they never existed. But I thought at one time QX flew the DC-9 to SMF from SEA. I never flew on the original QX F-28-1000's, but I flew on several of the ex-US F-28-4000's.

They leased one prior to their Fokkers coming in. Or at least, that's what news reports from the era reports they were going to. Initial services were announced as PSC-SEA and PSC-BOI.

This isn't true at all. One of the reasons OO keeps growing at AS is because they are cheaper and they have better OTP then AS mainline.

It is stone cold true.

OO wasn't even in the picture until QX couldn't staff the 175's.

I had forgotten about the Horizon DC-9s.

Just out of curiosity, I pulled out a Horizon Air timetable dated September 9, 1984.

It looks like, during that time, all of the DC-9 flying could have been operated by a single aircraft:

QX 11 Boise-Portland 7:25am-7:35am
QX 12 Portland-Boise 8:00am- 10:05am
QX 9 Boise-Seattle 12:00pm-12:20pm

Interesting, they are not replacing the Horizon CEO with another person, but instead the board added responsability for QX to current AS CEO Brad Tilden effective December 28th.

Seems like a lot of work for Brad given from all perceptions he likes to be fully involved with whatever is going on.

If I were shaping the leadership at AS, I'd keep Brad as CEO of Alaska and have 2 additional people, one president of Alaska, and one president of Horizon. That way Brad makes the final call for the whole corporation, but each brand has it's own leader too.

They had his position posted internally until some time this week. The internal memo said they were temporarily having those that reported to DC report to BT.

Looks like they board did not want of leave the position open for too long given how they are still recovering from the Horizon meltdown. The 8-K has the wording until a successor maybe be named so this might be a stopgap measure until they find someone permanent.

I am sure that the DC-9 & I think there was only one, was brought in as a gap between when SMF was announced & scheduled & when the first F-28-1000's were obtained. So I think it ran SEA/PDX-SMF & once the F-28's came, but the short lease term was not completed yet, the DC-9 was used to provide lift on trunk routes at peak times. I bet that last segment of the day had almost zero passengers, but was needed to get the plane into BOI for it's busy AM departure to PDX. I flew it to SEA from PDX in 1984.

Another change in plans. QX will get a separate CEO.

Gary Beck former AS VP Flt ops, and leader of AS/VX integration team will become QX new CEO.
Joining him is Constance von Muehlen former AS director of airframe maintenance as COO at QX.

The DC-9-10 was acquired quickly to compete with Cascade and it's fleet of BAC-1-11's - before the F-28's could arrive. It was just 1 DC9.

Thanks for confirming that info, do you happen to know how long the lease term was & who they obtained it from, It had a Horizon sticker on the side, but I remember it being white. & it was a 10 series as you indicated.
