U2 4319 LYS 1340 - 1505 RNS 32S ------7

U2 4320 RNS 1330 - 1455 LYS 32S 1-3-5--

I'm trying to understand the change of the CDG-CPT route from AF to JOON. Joon will operate this route in S18, 3 weekly, with their A340s it will be an increase for the season over last season's 3 weekly AF A330 operations. However currently in W17/18 AF is operating 5 weekly 777-200ER on this route...will Joon be able to match this capacity over W18/19, or will AF operate it again...will Joon by then be in a position to inrease frequency at least (I believe the Joon A340 capacity is slightly less than AF 777-200ER, depending which version AF use on the route)

I do not think that the plan includes airline switching according to the season. Joon is expecting 10 long-haul airliners in service by 2020 so a frequency increase would probably be possible for next northern winter season.

Thanks for the topic thread. I fly often to LYS, but always wondered why any city other than Paris has few--if any--connections to North America. There's only the LYS-YUL and seasonal NCE-JFK. Is it that premium traffic is just lower? Or that AF chooses to funnel everybody through CDG? I would imagine there are opportunities for Transatlantic expansion to at least NYC.

There are also MRS, NCE, NTE, BDX and TLS to YUL with Air Transat and NCE - YUL with AC Rouge.

Norwegian is exploring the possibilities of some TATL flights from BDX and NCE, see https://forex-1.info/main/norwegian-between-paris-and-the-west-indies-it-heats-up-really-up-for-2018.html.

Good to know, thanks. I guess because I leave from California, there are never any connecting flights with Air Transat. Still, it seems that there are some opportunities for point-to-point.

Twinjet operates these route twice daily on weekdays with BEH but targetting an all business customer base so maybe the two carriers can co-exist.

Flykiss operated this route a few months until ceasing activity earlier this year. Today you can connect these two cities via LYS, quite a long detour.

I believe it all boils down to the quasi-monopoly that AF enjoys in France, and their Paris-focused mentality. If BA is often jokingly referred to as Air London, then AF can certainly be called Air Paris!
I don't dispute the numbers or the lower yields of non-Parisian airports in France, but surely there is a lot of room for growth for long-haul flights from "The Regions". After all France is a large country, with lots of big cities.
Also, bear in mind that in the past even AF used to fly direct to JFK from Nice, Marseille, Lyon and perhaps Bordeaux, on the tri-class A310...

Toulon is getting some traction lately, also with new flights to CDG (double daily) and CPH.

I was recently in TLN for my first time and the terminal is quite big (specially when compared to some other "similar" airports like FNI) and looked quite deserted. Lots of room to grow there. Maybe it could be an easyJet / Ryanair airport in the future (specially now that U2 is venturing into smaller holiday airports). Weird enough, there are no flights to London, so a STN/ LGW/SEN/LTN-TLN would make a lot of sense.

I think CityJet used to operate that route until late this summer from LCY, but as with most LCY routes that have canceled it.
Maybe Flybe or BACF will give it a go on a seasonal basis?

Maybe even BA from LHR on one of those summer-only 2-weekly service. Hyères is a relatively posh destination so it fits well with BA/LHR.

TLN London has been tried so many times.

Buzz started STN TLN, until they went bust
BA had a short lived LGW TLN
Ryanair STN TLN
Cityjet für AF LCY TLN

None lasted. Maybe TLN is just too close, stuck between its big sisters NCE and MRS which have an abundance of direct flights to London.
It is a shame, I absolutely love this airport.
Looking forward to the CDG link starting in March.

No France is certainly not a large country : how long does it take to fly from Lille to Nice and from Seatle to Miami ?
France is not a small one either. Europe is a large one.

How many transoceanic regular flights are bound from or to Montana ?

AF is not the problem. The problem is the country structure of France.
The lone "Ile de France" region (around Paris) holds about 19% of the french people.
Travelling from Lille (a major city in France) city center to CDG requires less than 1 hour per train.
From Lyon it's only 2h and from Marseille it's 3 h. Compare with JFK express times, where are you within 1 h ?
Lots of people working in Paris reside in a 150 km (approx 110 mi) distance. Some people working in Paris have move to Aix en Provence just because of the train and the nice weather.

AF, and other airlines DL, LH, BA will change from their preferred Paris based scheme, if the nation economic structure change. Will it ever change ? That's another question.

I'll try to be as polite as possible, but you should work on your international geography and 'general sense of geographical awareness' a bit, as well as realizing Europe is NOT a country.
Also: define big. Could we perhaps agree that France is large, mature, western economy? Yes?

Does the US ALWAYS have to be the pre-defined benchmark for all and sundry in this forum?

I'm going to type this in capitals!

I AGREE TOTALLY WITH YOUR REPLY.

Phil Dur

I'm going to be as polite as well BUT your post is absolutely ridiculous and you just don't get it at all and your obvious lacking any knowledge of Geography and that France is the second largest country in EUROPE.

Have you ever heard of a TGV?

Even a 5 year old child knows that Europe is NOT a country.

Ohhh, dearie me, Mr Cunard...some of the people on this forum......... 'nuff said. :banghead:
Oh well, what can you do, really...

The main issue in France is the mentality of both people and politicians.
- People, for many french the sole and only one transportation hub for international long distance travel is Paris due to the huge offer that kills any competition from the regions because the demand isn't as much as it is in Paris (not talking about the yields).
- Politicians are located in Paris and fear the "competition" from "La province" (the rest of the country). The best example is Lyon. It is a fairly large city with good economy and a huge potential for at least some key intercontinental links (let's say daily US, ME3 and perhaps to the Caribbean) but everything is done to focus on connecting through CDG hub rather than developing LYS properly. AF killed its well-designed and managed hub ops in order not to compete with CDG. DL tried JFK from there but when you wanted to book the first options were always through CDG...
