Dakar, Senegal's brand new airport opens Dec. 7th 2017

Thu Dec 07, 2017 5:19 am

Today the brand new airport Blaise Diagne International Airport in Dakar, Senekal (IATA: DSS and ICAO: GOBD) opens with a delay of 7 years, with a new runway and a new terminal featuring 6 jetbridges. It is located 47 kilometres from the capital and it will replace the old DKR airport in the city. Dakar has quite some international traffic to Europe, Africa, Dubai and the US (IAD with SA and JFK with DL). The region is getting state-of-the art airport infrastructure as also the new airport with a new runway in Nouakchott, Mauritania opened in June 2016.

Senegal opens a flagship new airport on Thursday seven years later than originally planned but with ambitions to become a west African regional hub with a capacity for three million passengers.

President Macky Sall will cut the ribbon at Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD) at midday (1200 GMT) in the town of Diass, 47 kilometres (29 miles) from the capital of Dakar, while a plane from new airline Air Senegal will make the first symbolic takeoff.

Work began in 2007 on the 645 million-euro ($767 million) airport under former president Abdoulaye Wade, but unforeseen problems and a change of construction company have repeatedly delayed the project and ballooned costs.

Blaise Diagne — named after the Senegalese MP who was the first African elected to France’s parliament — is at the heart of Sall’s “Emerging Senegal” plan, which includes the construction of a new city, Diamniadio, close to the site in Diass.

As the country invests more heavily in tourism, Senegal is also betting on the facility’s strategic position close to several beach resorts that are already heavily frequented by European holidaymakers.

With a capacity of three million passengers, Blaise Diagne will still rank far below the busiest African airports and a long way off challenging Nigeria in the west African region, though plans for up to 10 million travellers are in the pipeline, according to officials.

Is the old airport going to be closed with the opening of this new airport, or will they be running both for the foreseeable future?

The old DKR airport will become a military airport, once all airlines have been shifted to the new terminal.

However, some local authorities claim that the old airport should remain open for domestic flights. Most of these are just 30-minute flights but from the location of the new airport it could even take up to 2 hours to reach the city centre, until a new rail link is available.

Is the planned new rail link part of the new airport development or is just planned for the future, if and when it is built what is the anticipated journey time going to be from the new airport to downtown Dakar.

Having been to Senegal myself I know that the roads can be a bit hit and miss but will it really take two hours to reach the new airport from Dakar city centre as it's only 29 miles.

Hopefully once the railway line is in place and the Senegal economy grows we may see further international expansion from airlines such as British Airways from London.

The new rail link that will connect Dakar with the new airport is already under construction, due to be finished in late 2018. 15 trains Alstom Coradia Regiolis such as these were ordered:

As per Wikipedia, it shows the following

The Train Express Regional (TER) is a proposed rail line in Senegal to ultimately connect Dakar with the Blaise Diagne International Airport. [2]It will be built by French companies Engie and Thales. The contract is valued at €2 billion and has raised some criticism due to the exhorbitant cost.

Travel time between the city and the airport is expected to be under 50 minutes.

The line will be built in two stages, with the first covering 36 km from the city of Dakar to Diamniadio, while the second stage covering 19 km more to the airport. Construction is expected to take 26 months beginning in the third quarter of 2016, completion in late 2018.

29 miles away from the city seems pretty distant but its not unheard of.

And there’s also a BER joke in here somewhere.

Good for Senegal.
I still think this new airport was unnecessary and exorbitantly expensive (they just needed a new terminal at the old site, IMHO) however the old airport was a utter and complete dump so I'll take any improvement.

Congratulations for Senegal. Nice to see new projects like this in Africa.
Not wanting to go too much off topic... does anyone have pics or news about the future new Luanda airport?

Agree, great to see new airport infrastructure but particularly in Africa, where many of the big cities are still using airports originally built by colonial administrations.

The new LAD seems to be shaping up nicely after a period a year or so ago where nothing was being built. The latest Google Earth images show both runways paved/painted, and jetbridges being hung at the gates. A Chinese consortium is leading construction, and we know how fast they can get infrastructure built.

Khartoum is also supposedly building a new airport - the site has been fenced off and is visible on Google Earth, but no construction is apparent.

Apparently for the time being there will not be any hotel at the airport or near the airport. Currently, the new Dakar airport wants to develop a maintenance area for planes.

One more picture with the front view of the new airport in Dakar:

As far as the new airport in Luanda, Angola is concerned, it will be a large terminal, with three piers each with 10 jetbridges. All three piers are now visible in satellite images, however construction is still going on.
