UA to ILM

Tue Nov 21, 2017 8:12 am

Wilmington Airport has a posting on UA's Facebook page.
UA is launching flights from ILM to both IAD and ORD.
It's not noted in the OAG thread either.
Will the market be large enough to support them?
Is F9 still at the airport?

Nice adds for UA and ILM. The market shouldn't be a problem. UAX used to serve ILM several years ago. My guess is four flights daily, either 2x to each city or 1x ORD, 3x IAD on CR2s.

F9 didn't serve Wilmington, NC. You're thinking Wilmington, DE.

I don't remember F9 ever serving Wilmington, NC.

whoever wrote that is confusing Wilmington, Delawayre and Wilmington, NC. Frontier flew to Wilmington, DE, but never to Wilmington, NC

Kind of surprised. I figured if UA was going to serve ILM, EWR would have been the most likely destination.

They would need to be careful... the last time UA tried a EWR-Carolina route it didn’t end up so well ;-)

Probably a big blow to Pitt Greenville Airport. They’ve been in talks with UA for a couple years trying to lure them.

Four flights isn't very many. Too bad they couldn't add IAH into the mix.

But we all know UA will dehub IAD anyway. (wink, wink, grin).

Assuming you're being serious... why would you need a lie flat seat on a ~2 hour flight?

Which flight are you referencing? The only debacle I remember was UA trying to fly RDU to LaGuardia.

Sarcasm isn't obvious when written, especially with no context about the writer. There are plenty of people on this board who say ridiculous things completely seriously.

The 2100 arrival into IAD still hits a number of notable connecting flights such as LHR, FRA, GRU, DUB, YYZ, YUL on the international side and pretty much every city in the Northeast and many major midwestern cities with IAD service on the domestic side.

One can hope that this time, the purpose of the route will not be a payoff to a government official. With Smizek gone, more likely there is a belief that it could actually work.

I reside in Wilmington and worked ramp here with ACA from station operators I 98 until we closed in 01. I'm excited to see my favorite airline come back. I plan on applying.

For that few flights, they'll probably just contract with DGS to operate the station. Or Piedmont, either way, I doubt they open a station operation in ILM.

About 25 years ago United had 50 states mainline flights. United flew 727 into ILM I think ORD-CAE-ILM. Not sure where flying from to ILM non stop was. I have United timetable in my storage.

Does Wilmington still have any movie making connections? I know several films were shot there, especially in the 80s and 90s.

Yes, although it is much quieter since the NC Legislature cut way back on tax incentives a few years ago. Much of the production left for Georgia and Louisiana.

More TV than movies these days. It's not nearly as big as it used to be. As another mentioned, the legislature cut way back on incentives. Personally, I agree with the move. It's not the job creator that people think it is. Almost all temporary work for locals. Most of the high skilled staff (including actors, directors, assistants, production) don't live in ILM. They come in for filming and then go home.

Nowadays its easier than ever to film anywhere, so production outfits go where they get the best deals. Recently that's been Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan, and a bunch of others.

ACA flew IADILM from 1998 to the early 2000s. Before that, UA Express flew it from 1991 to 1993, IINM. I have a few UA timetables referencing these services.

Clearly trolling. :D

Found it funny that the idea of UA closing the IAD hub has been a reoccurring theme here for the last 5 years. Glad you got it at least.

Yeah, I get it. I know quite a few shows and movies are filmed in Vancouver, BC.

In regards to the thread, didn't AA fly M80's there, before the RDU or BNA hubs? I want to say they flew DFW-CLT (maybe?)-ILM.
