FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

NOTE: There were some problems with the source file this week, so take it with a grain of salt

WOW...we finally get a FAT-ORD flight..after nearly 30 years..surprised this was UA..I thought AA would have jumped in first. Either way, a welcome addition to Fresno's nonstop destinations.

Be careful what you wish for! The equipment is an E175 with a block time of 4 hours and 41 minutes westbound.

1) Isn’t March pretty early for CLT-CDG? I haven’t seen it that early IIRC. Maybe they’re trying to expand its season with lower frequency.
2) CLT-TUS is a much smarter and safer add than JFK-TUS. Here’s to hoping that it lasts.
3) STT takes another hit...Sad to see.

And thanks Enilria you have made a Sunday tradition for me.

CLT CDG usually starts in APRIL I believe.

ORD MAN says dropped but it is going summer seasonal.

The BFF, LBF, and LBL routes are Skywest at-risk EAS markets with marketing agreements with UA. These are the takeover after PenAir pulled out earlier this year. Not so sure on the COD route. Can anyone confirm? Skywest seems to have been on a tear recently getting into many EAS markets. Seems like the best chance for these routes to succeed long term. Seemless connections to UA with the normal every day passenger thinking they're flying a large airline instead of the likes of PenAir or Great Lakes. Be looking for the EAR (Kearney, NE) EAS contract to be awarded to Skywest as well once their runway expansion is complete Fall of 2018.

Peace :box:

US formerly did CLT-CDG year round, thrice weekly in the winter from around 2010 to 2012 or so. With AA being stronger in CDG now I’ve wondering if they could make year round work again.

US also used to do CLT-FCO from March until after Christmas. The route was originally planned to be flown year round but was curtailed for the Winter season.

That flight supplies the Q400 for the SNA-STS flight which brings up the question. Where is the plane for the SNA-STS flight coming from? Maybe there are going to double up on the SNA-STS flight.

I ran out of space to put that one in the headline. I guess airlines wanted to get all this out before the Holiday.

I don't know if I remember a point when both CLT and PHL had zero service to SXM and STT. Typically it is at least 2-4x weekly in the summer.

a lot of new capacity here

not really a surprise here. VX is getting killed on these routes. At this point, I'm surprised FLL-LAX is still at 3 daily. Those $100 O/W ticket isn't going to be good for yields.

Why is ORD-BZN an interesting note? UA ran increased ORD flights to Montana last summer with a lot of mainline.

BZN is starting to see Skywest jets for AS from SEA.

I don’t know if this has been covered but I saw an Elite Air SEA-GTF and didn’t know if they were subbing for Alaska or that was a one off. ?

I was going to say, perhaps the DTW reductions are switching out 50 seaters for larger RJ's or mainline, which is not a bad thing.

FAT-ORD is interesting, on an E70 its not a bad ride, they are mainline like aircraft.

Skywest/UA out of DEN seems to be taking a page from AA/DFW with going for smaller EAS cities in the plains to their large hub. AA has had a lot of success with this with DFW as their hub and in a good position to connect to anywhere, hopefully UA will too, although DFW/AA is a much larger hub at DFW with connections virtually everywhere. Hopefully it works for UA, DEN is a natural connecting point for these cities. I've noticed they have also been trying this at midwestern cities to ORD (Quincy IL, Cape Girardeau MO for example).

I didn't realize AA had been flying PHX-IFP at all. When was that added? I know as recently as a couple of years ago, IFP was charter-only, mostly just Sun Country casino charters.

I think most of the summer UA Montana adds called out with stars in this thread are actually regular seasonal resumptions (except perhaps LAX-FCA, which I think is actually new).

The LAX adds are interesting: LAX-MFR, LAX-RDM (not starred), and LAX-FCA. Also, the DEN EAS adds, DEN-JAX, and ORD-FAT + ORD-ELP are cool to see.

I'm guessing we'll continue to see incremental cuts to STT and SXM until the tourism infrastructure is back up and running.

I remember AX having issues loading the at-risk stuff a decade ago when I lived in STL and commuted to BDL and so kept a close eye on the PIT operation. I don’t think it has gotten any better, so there may not be anything to see here.

RDU shows up this week, going from 2x mainline & 3x 2-class RJs to 4x mainline (2x MD88 & 2x 717 starting in May. Its actually a slight increase in seats on one less frequency.
Again part of the long-term trend as 50 seat RJs come out of the network.

It might be an interesting exercise to look at the largest markets with 50 seaters and large RJs ex-DTW. You may know off the top of your head, but I’m virtually certain that the trend is significantly upward. Markets like PIT that routinely saw 50-seaters five years ago now are all large RJs with occasional mainline. I think it’s a positive for the passenger experience. I use DTW for both O&D and connections a fair amount and cannot recall the last time I had a flight from B or C.

UA has a bunch of new adds, but a hell of a lot of domestic frequency reductions. I wonder if they're up-gauging or if they're reducing capacity across the network. A lot of the reductions are for March and April, which usually stays fairly busy for spring break. Maybe they're seeing less bookings than expected? Or more likely just trying to appease investors.

It's probably easier to push AS off LAX-MFR with all of the QX problems than it would be to try to go against AA on LAX-EUG.

Before they "upgraded" this piece-of-crap site you wouldn't have had to.

If we're going to spend money on EAS then this is the way to do it. A legit regional with seamless connections to a major at a large hub. People will actually use this.

Wow. I missed the LAX-Montana adds. UA has been doing SFO-Montana but I don’t think those do as well. They never get too much upgauge and additional frequencies like the ORD and DEN flights. Maybe BZN had an LAx last summer. I wonder if EwR-BZN is coming back.

DL has tried and has run (still?) some random seasonal LAX-Montana. Allegiant has, I haven’t kept up.

FCA is booming in the summer from the appearance. I haven’t checked stats but I know Glacier hit 3.3 million visitors. I even saw WestJet q400s there this summer. There were a lot of mainline of mainline flights.

ORD and DEN have been seeing steady increases in capacity each summer.

I'm a bit surprised they're back to ELM so soon as well, but I think EWR will work better than ORD this time around. I wonder if adding ELM will affect Ithaca's three daily flights to EWR -- I guess time will tell.

Wow with all of the PDX cuts as of late the airport will definitely lose it hub status soon for AS..............

It’s worth remembering that these are all planned to be back as of May versus being permanent drops. Perhaps just continued fallout of the Horizon squeeze — long routes with limited competition and/or softer demand that give a lot of bang for the buck to cut when resources are tight.

A little (apparent) Portland love: the new 2017 seasonal PDX-MKE which ran June until late August is running through the current booking window which is mid October 2018. Either a longer season or perhaps permanent.

All of the reductions in DTW are a product of upgauging some flights to mainline; mostly 717, with the Cseries coming online in this time frame.

Yup and how about counting ATL or JFK in May, which are both a net -1 in frequency. I know the excuse will be that it’s caused by the post-hurricane Caribbean cuts, which are probably temporary. Still while DTW is cut the most in terms of frequency, they’re certainly not alone and most routes are getting upgauged with small net capacity increases.

If my memory is correct, this reverses the filing from a week or 2 ago.
I;m wondering about this one...*AS ANC-DUT DEC 3>0 JAN 4>0 FEB 2>0 MAR 2>0 APR 2>0 MAY 2>0 JUN 2>0 JUL 2>0. This was operated by a Penair Saab.

not really a surprise here. VX is getting killed on these routes. At this point, I'm surprised FLL-LAX is still at 3 daily. Those $100 O/W ticket isn't going to be good for yields.

I do a lot of flying to Florida via AS/VX/AAG - you'd be surprised how many bookings come in at last minute and not necessarily at $100 fares.

WOW...we finally get a FAT-ORD flight..after nearly 30 years..surprised this was UA..I thought AA would have jumped in first. Either way, a welcome addition to Fresno's nonstop destinations.

Good to see. I just had a run to New England a few weeks ago and had to go via 2 connections (DEN and EWR) to get to my destination. This flight will make that run easier with only 1 connection.

Lots of rumors are flying around that there will be many new routes at FAT in 2018 from multiple airlines. Supposedly AS, WN, and more have FAT in their planning. More announcements may be on the way.

This flight was one that was among those that were forecast in the new airport master plan as part of future terminal requirement planning. AA E75s to ORD are also forecast as an addition in the next few years in the master plan.

Not so much. These have normally been E175 routes, and have long been stated most likely temporary reductions until their pilot issues are resolved.

I just checked the new schedule, looks like they are starting it as a late flight. I'll have to check the banks to see what connections it provides:

FAT-ORD depart 11:01pm arrive 5:12am
ORD-FAT depart 7:35pm arrive 10:16pm

Apparently not enough to make the flights work in the middle of the winter.

They need to be a lot higher than $100 O//W. For example, similar distance transcon out of JFK/BOS are normally around $180 to $225 O/W for cheapest fare. It's also how much FLL-LAX/SFO had been going for until recently. And JFK-LAX/SFO also have $400+ last minute booking and $1000+ premium seats to cover the $200 y fares.

VX operates very high CASM aircraft on these routes and B6 with the better and cheaper product has taken up all the premium market. Remember, they also offer very weak schedule vs B6 out of BOS and AA out of MIA, so don't get nearly the same number of close in bookings or corporate contracts. So these are huge money loosing routes.

And btw, adding 4 more FC seat on the A320 (I believe that's the current plan) don't lower the CASM, but will result in even fewer paid first class seats and fewer paid upgrades at gates.

It's a pretty typical redeye schedule that should connect to virtually anything east (and some places west) of the Mississippi River in a reasonable fashion both directions. Westbound schedules will connect reasonably well with a lot of European itineraries as well, eastbound international connectivity wouldn't be the focus of this type of schedule.

Kind of shocking to see AA drop JFK-STT. I know it's hurricane related, but I always thought they had operated that route almost continuously since their acquisition of Trans-Caribbean.
