Delta 747 @ LAX

Sat Nov 18, 2017 9:22 pm

Hi,

I see a Deta 747-451 on a sports charter from Buffalo to Los Angeles. I was wondering if anyone knew how long it would be in LAX and where it’s going from there! I have a helicopter tour over the airport tomorrow and was hoping to catch it.

Thanks so much for any info!

The game probably over about 6 pm local time Sunday so figure departure approx 2.5 to 3 hours after that heading back to BUF. Wish we could have gotten one into MSY but don't think it will happen. :D

Saw it in Buf today, pretty cool knowing that it's time is short. Didn't know they would use an aircraft that big for a sports charter

Unless Delta makes a change, the Bills will be the last NFL team on a DL 747 when they fly down to FLL to play the Dolphins on New Years Eve.

DL is actually "burning cycles" on the remaining B744 as they wind-down scheduled, revenue passenger flights as well as keeping crews active with disproportionately more military and sports charters on the fleet than usual in its final weeks. In past some of these would go the B763, A330, B772 but you're seeing these going to excess B744 capacity in its final weeks.

Any particular advantage of using the 744 for this? It's great they're doing it, but I'm interested to know why.

I am sure they are thinking why not use every bit of flying out of the soon to be retired a/c instead of adding time on a/c that will fly on. Plus using up crews that are getting guaranteed pay for the month.
Even if they are more expensive to operate it must make sense to Network and Accounting.
Plus making a lot of 747 crews happy to get to fly one last leg on them.

Maybe crews are on guarantee so they would get paid anyway? Either way nice to see them.
