Lessor sells 3 former IB MD-80 aircraft to Venezuelan airline

Sat Nov 18, 2017 8:42 am

I couldn't find this in any of the forums and it's a very interesting story. All of my information (at the moment) comes from Twitter, and there's much speculation over who's actually bought the planes. Some people say that it's either Venezolana or Turpial Airlines while others suggest that a start-up is buying them. There are pictures circulating of IB's ex-EC-FND flying for the first time in 9 years, quite a spectacular sight! It's a surreal apparition from the past. Here are some pictures

Don't hesitate to share some information if you know more.

Always thought the MD-80s IB stored at MAD belong to some other companies already (e.g. leasing companies)....

On a side note does anyone know why the former Iberia A300's that have been derelict at Valencia Airport for many years were never sold or at least by now dismantled?

I heard through the grapevine that these planes are for a start-up airline called VOR AIRLINES, that will be based in Porlamar (Margarita Island).
Further gossip claims that the airline belongs to a highly-ranked military person or persons.
Their plans include international flights from Porlamar "to bring tourists to the island".
Just so you know, under the present circumstances, nobody in their right mind would invest a large sum of money to start an airline in Venezuela, so there must be something fishy here. Something related to the exchange rate at which they receive the USD, etc, that allows money to change hands legally. Cannot elaborate because there's no evidence.

Certainly an interesting development. Miss those MD80’s and A300’s.

I've also heard of the VOR Airlines story. Awful name, by the way.
Their first MD-88 is scheduled to arrive here in Fortaleza for a tech stop. It will arrive in basic Iberia colors... not confirmed though. Hope they paint it before!

For sure they are very personal for me too as I flew all the fleet during my childhood back and forth between LHR-ATH. Sadly never got on the IB or AZ ones which would have been great. Loved seeing them at LHR T2 back in the day.

The planes we are talking here about do not belong to IB anymore (even though they have basic IB colours), they belong to a leasing company (don´t know which ones).

If the aircraft have been sitting for 10 years now do we think it will be expensive to reactivate them and not only bring them back to flying condition but commercial service condition?

you would be a little uneasy taking one out over the atlantic for hours that had been grounded for 9 years. Surely significant hard and software updates...

Either way, remind me again why IB ditched their iconic beautiful livery for Eurowhite and a bland, meaningless swoosh tail?

Uh no, Insel Air is definitely not from Venezuela. They're based on the island of Curacao, a Dutch Constituent Country. It just so happens to be 65 miles north of Venezuela.

I had flown on that particular aircraft on the MAD-VGO-MAD rotations, as well as on some flights to/from LHR. It is awesome that these old birds found a new home after years of being idle. Long live the MadDog!!

How many MD-80 did Iberia fly and when? Remember 727 and 757 and Dc-9-30 but no Mad Dogs.

When these fly in commercial service, I'll be impressed. Until then, I suspect any Venezuelan purchases as money laundering. Sorry to be a cynic... but that is where the nation is due to the nature of government.

Iberia operated 24 MD-87s and 13 MD-88s. Additionally, Iberia leased one MD-83 prior to the delivery of their first MD-87 and one MD-88 from Onur Air.
The MD-83 was leased between 1988 and 1990, while the Onur Air MD-88 was leased between 2003 and 2005.

The first MD-87 was introduced in April 1990 while the 13 MD-88s were inherited with the take-over of Aviaco in 1999.
