David Neeleman purchases 32% of Aigle Azur

Thu Nov 16, 2017 5:27 pm

David Neeleman has acquired a minority 32 percent stake in the second largest French airline company Aigle Azur (and oldest private airline in Europe founded in 1946) by purchasing stake formerly held by family owned Weaving Group.

The family owners behind the airlines for several years had been looking for strategic partners to lead Aigle Azur to new stage which was part of reason for sale of 48% stake to China HNA group in 2012.

If you have the word blue in your airline's name (in any language), David Neelman is coming for you.

TAP doesn't have Blue :)
I think this is more a continuation of the Neeleman/HNA partnership: Azul, TAP, and now Aigle Azur.

Interesting and surprising move. Aigle Azur have been quietly doing a very good job - and for a long time. Given the rumours about the commercial agreement with Corsair, and the fact that TUI wants to shed Corsair, who knows if Mr Neeleman could potentially buy the two, and combine ops under one single brand... now that would be a big coup! The two carriers combined would offer a pretty large and interesting network, with fleets that would complement each other... Such a company could then become a real strong opposer to all the latest French market long-haul LCC contenders...

Let's see if we're looking at something with TP here?

I assume with HNA and Neeleman now involved in the company, we probably should see some decent expansion and growth.

Possibly for ZI ending their operation to LIS and OPO and leaving those routes for TP (while code sharing), and focusing in more yielding routes. With only 11 aircraft in the fleet (any known orders?), I guess there are plenty of new route possibilities to pursue.

If Aigle Azur and Corsair were ever to merge I wonder what name they would adopt as both companies have a strong heritage and it would be a shame to lose one or the other so perhaps a total rebranding would happen.

If Neeleman is involved you can bet it will have Blue (in some language) in the new name.

Well as mentioned before on this thread there is no 'blue' in TAP Air Portugal!

This is the end of the Tourmag report:

Finally, thanks to the Chinese group HNA, owner of 48% of the company, a true "privileged partner", according to the words of Frantz Yvelin, newly appointed head of the company, Aigle Azur prepares a new strategic plan for revive the long-haul activities of the company.

"We are lucky to have this privileged partner," he explained. "This allows us to look naturally towards the East, including the Middle Kingdom," the new CEO told us.
