Meridiana closes LIN "hub"

Tue Nov 14, 2017 11:19 pm

Not really a huge hub but IG will cease all flights out of LIN except OLB.
Noteworthy IB will be the only operator from LIN to MAD and has already added an extra daily frequency. AZ will also have a monopoly on NAP. Last but not least there will no longer be a connection between LIN and MUC. Only flights will be from BGY and MXP.
It seems the core business of Meridiana/Air Italy is to lease slots to IAG airlines.
Meanwhile the airline is still deciding whether to establish its main hub at MXP or FCO.

Interesting move, have we seen a firm business plan come out of IG? Be interesting to see what they plan, MXP is more suited to long haul, LIN is more preferred by local Milan business traffic is this correct?

Yes, LIN is preferred for business traffic. I wonder what they plan on using the 787’s for, will be interesting to see how italy plays out in the coming years.

All we know so far is that IG is slated to receive some MAXs for short haul and 787s and/or a330s from QR for long haul expansion. An FCO hub will be head to head against AZ which is not exactly a winning horse. MXP would be interested because it draws a lot of traffic from Switzerland. Yes the Swiss are rich, but apparently smart with their money too!

Wow.. shocking to see IG leave LIN....
The reason LIN is *still* to this day MUCH preferred by business/frequent flyers over MXP is simply because the connections to the latter are still weak...those 50 or so kilometres to Malpensa can pretty much be an insurmountable divide between flying and not flying when trains are slow, riddled with delays, plagued by strikes, unreliable, infrequent, leaving from the "wrong" station... and let's not even mention the motorway, the fog, the snow....
It takes some pretty good convincing to make a Milanese pick MXP over LIN....
