First confirmed drone strike (B738 Buenos Aires Nov 11th)?

Tue Nov 14, 2017 7:45 pm

An Aerolineas Argentinas Boeing 737-800 smacked a drone when on approach to Buenos Aires. The aircraft received two minor bumps on the side of the fuselage, right below the left hand cockpit window. I know there have been reports claiming drone collision before, but I think this is the first one where it is more or less confirmed. I'm not sure if the remains of the drone have been found, but the pilots claim they saw a drone and then felt the impact.

As always, Simon is on top of things:

Right then, the proper way of doing this is install new firmware in all commerical drones enforcing a whole red zone or no fly zones by airports along STAR,SIDS and along the case of LAX with such specialized airspace. Just no. No.
Well uh, I obviously decided to refine this but i dont know how.

apparently, those approved by the aviation authority (ANAC) can detect if they are taking off in a no fly zone, but not if it was bought abroad.

A King Air hit one on approach to CYQB a couple months ago, scary stuff, could easily have been through an engine.
