New airline to RIC??

Tue Nov 14, 2017 3:23 am

Several new outlets in Richmond are reporting an announcement of a new airline to Richmond tomorrow. We have Allegiant (added) AA, DL, SW, Jet Blue, One Jet, United. Any insights??? Air Canada has been on again off again over the last 20 years or so to YYZ. Frontier/Spirit--seems unlikely?

I think the best announcement would be expanded Southwest service to STL/DEN/MDW--but this is obviously not it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Michael

According to the RIC website, they are showing G4 for Orlando and Tampa, not sure if that's new or not, but you didn't put them in your list.

NK is supposed to announce another new airport soon so it might make sense.

I'd put my money on Spirit. If it is Spirit, then that will confirm my theory of them targeting the smaller markets first, before the bigger ones.

For example: NK chose CAK and CMH over IND and STL at this point of time.

I’m guessing it’s either F9 or NK. The news article mentions multiple destinations. I assume we will see MCO, TPA, RSW, DEN, LAS, and maybe MIA if it’s Frontier and if it’s Spirit than switch MIA with FLL and drop DEN.

Usually F9 doesn't add stuff until its schedule extension time. NK tends to add things into their existing schedule. At least from what i've seen. Time will tell.

I had heard a rumor a little while back about southern air express growing and I think RIC was a city I heard, not as big of a splash as an F9 or NK but a few regional destinations with then could also be in the mix

I hope it’s not Southren air. IMO that’s not something to get very excited about. I hope it’s Spirit.

This is what I mentioned in the DC/VA/MD thread last night. I feel that Frontier is potentially more likely, but Spirit would also make sense. I could see Frontier going to Denver, or Spirit to Florida and maybe something like DFW or LAS. I'm certainly hoping for something west of the Rockies — United has proven RIC can sustainably support a western flight, so I would love to see some follow on adds.

This airport definitely stayed way on the back burner for me, this is completely unexpected and frankly I’m surprised.

It's a cool city actually. If you want to take an overnight or day trip on a cheap fare you should visit.

Good for RIC! They should do well on this route. FLL and MCO are very popular for Richmonders.

RIC is a pretty high fare airport with a very small LCC presence, so NK should do well there. They have pretty easy connections to MSY through FLL - hopefully we'll see a couple weekly nonstops added eventually.

Shoot. Would have been nice to have F9 add DEN to give United some competition. Flying my family of four to DEN and back the week after Christmas set me back $3100, and the flights were only 50% booked when I made the reservation. There are definitely cheaper options, but with an infant along for the ride, non-stop was a must. Hoping Southwest will add a nonstop to DEN one day soon.

RIC hasn't really been that way in a pretty long time. That certainly used to be the case — 15 years ago, it was one of the most expensive airports in the nation. When AirTran started service around 2005, that changed things significantly. JetBlue starting flights not long after helped as well. The Southwest merger reduced the pretty sizable AirTran operation, but JetBlue has grown over the years, and Allegiant started service a couple of years ago too. Spirit will go a long way towards bringing Florida fares down the way AirTran did, so it's undoubtedly a good thing for the city.

Will Spirit disrupt JetBlue's presence on RIC-MCO? JetBlue flies 2x daily but on E190 and I can't tell if it is accustomed to sell a one-way below $100 on the route. It might be subject to a much downward faring pressure from Spirit. Southwest tried RIC-MCO and then it was Southwest that pulled service, while JetBlue lasted, so I'm wary if all will co-exist will this time.

Great news for Richmond and this frankly shows the stupidity of WN. WN took over the MCO route form Air Tran and then abandoned it although WN said it was profitable for them.

Since then Jet Blue has taken over the route and made a tidy profit.....and now Spirit. WN has screwed over the Richmond market. To hell with them imho. Now we are getting some carriers who understand the market and are willing to take a little risk.

Anyone who lived in Richmond ten years ago remembers what a great little operation AirTran ran out of RIC. I realize that Southwest was short on airplanes when they dumped the B712 fleet, but they gave up a very successful operation when they pared down to the ATL flight. Southwest never had brand loyalty in the Richmond area despite having served ORF for many years, and I can't imagine they'd expand on that with one lonely route. Definitely a shame.

This makes more sense that starting something like IAD. Smart add by NK.

As a former resident of Glen Allen, I remember it well. I always thought Delta could have stepped into the void.

Interesting perspective.

From what I understand, when WN took over the FL operation, they wanted to streamline the operation into what WN operated with, this meant cutting routes where there was no availability for catering/non catering stations with few flights, and hence a number of flights from RIC were cut with the intention to later look at the options from there, hence why RIC still receives 3x daily flights but only from ATL which is very odd.

It's no argument that WN dropped the ball with RIC, I'm not a big fan of NK, but I'm happy to see them jump in and stimulate the RIC market, even if it's only Florida flying. I'm guessing within a year we'll see a number of new destinations from RIC.

I really think....based on UA's success on the RIC-DEN route.....that Frontier could be successful flying the same route. If you are flying UA and connecting to the west coast through Denver from Richmond, fares are reasonable. But point to point UA is charging a premium because it is the only nonstop service.

Hopefully Spirit will expand it's service as time goes on and RIC can add Frontier. All in all a good day for the Richmond market.
