Why No AA/LATAM Service JFK-BOG?

Wed Nov 08, 2017 8:29 pm

Looking at the combined destination list and strength of AA/LATAM from New York, it seems somewhat curious that there's no presence on the JFK-BOG route, as it is hub-hub. I can think of a few reasons why this might be so:

a) US-Colombia yields aren't what they used to be.
b) BOG's altitude affects aircraft performance and AA/LATAM don't have the right bird for the route (DL/CO do NYC-BOG with 738s/757s of which AA have plenty)
c) Avianca's the 800 pound gorilla on the route, and what marketshare is left is too fractured to support a nonstop.
d) AA would rather flow Colombian traffic over MIA/DFW.

Anyone else want to take a guess?

If I'm not mistaken, AA applied years ago for a BOG-JFK authority, however it never came to fruition and CO (now UA) got its current BOG-EWR route.

Lots of flights between JFK and MIA so my assumption would be is that One World is routing Bogota traffic through MIA.

AFAIK, DL doesn’t operate JFK-BOG anymore. I’m not sure when it stopped.

LATAM Serves 21 destinations throughout the Americas via BOG, so while it's no SCL or GRU, it's not nothing either.

LIM is a big HUB for LATAM as well. It flies 9x weekly LIM-JFK.

More like a focus city than anything else: only 9 international destinations and the rest are domestic.

AV on the other hand....
