FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Surprised to see SY hang on to SJU, and though understandably, a pity to see the RSW service exit. This ends a period where second-and third-tier Florida cities saw nonstop service to SJU over the past few years (RSW, PBI, JAX), and now trims service back to the traditionally strong markets (MCO, MIA, FLL, TPA, and I suppose you can also count the G4 SFB flights as well).

The cruises will likely be back to cater to the winter MSP traffic, and taking advantage that DL won't be flying the Saturday-only MSP flight this coming winter/spring.

With the loss of AWI PHL-MKE finally sees E75's on AA.
PHL-RDU also gets a 319 and 738

Two weeks ago it was one flight reduced. Last week it was 4 more reductions. And this week yet another cut. For an airline that says they're committed to growth in SEA, it looks like a slow and steady reduction is in process.

That's a huge increase in the SMF market for WN. I'm pleased to see it.

2x daily on SMF-LGB one can only assume they are trying to push JetBlue out of that market.
6x daily on SMF-SEA is interesting as I think DL just up'd their game in this market and now last I read AS had added mainline again.

The DCA schedule change coincides with the 5 year settlement with the DOJ, could this be AA getting some of those slots back? Would we see the pulldown from other carriers yet or is it too early?

I have to wonder if the AS pullback in DL markets is connected.

Everybody else is so small that I think it would be really noticeable, and I haven't noticed. The only "junk" at DCA I am aware of is that DL has a few slots flying things like DCA-LEX. I can imagine DL letting those go, but hard to say.

I believe the additional AA DCA slots were leased from UA, who got them from WN when EWR lost its slot control status.

A Delta infographic from Jan. '17 showed 160 peak day flights to 49 destinations in 2017. http://news.delta.com/infographic-you-cant-stop-seattle

Is there a database guru who can give us the count for a non-holiday week July Monday, say, 7/16/18?

Aren't some of those new destinations from SJC new, since the last big announcement? For example, I don't remember GEG being added, isn't that new?

And yes, lots of added frequency at SJC on existing routes. The SJC buildup continues!

That is correct. Every summer (going back a couple decades actually) there is a seasonal weekly flight from California to the Azores.

We discussed it 11 years ago in this thread:
viewtopic.php?t=398059

There is a large population of Azorean immigrants and their descendants in California, going back generations. They settled in the Bay Area, Central Valley and Coastal areas. The flight handles a lot of summer VFR traffic.

Surprised to see DCA-PNS going to 2x daily. AA just restarted the route in April, so a second flight is pretty fast.

Overall AA seems to be making a push to grow in PNS. Mainline has returned to DFW-PNS and even CLT-PNS has seen mainline make a return.

so single digit reductions in SEA and Delta slowly reducing its SEA operations? As someone just also pointed out, a total of 3 less flights year over year. I would hardly call that a drawdown on its SEA ops. Rest assured, DL is not going anywhere at SEA. A wee bit dramatic with your assessment maybe?

I believe this is due to as taking over from vx starting in late April. They originally had increased it to 4 daily but has since cut it back to 3 daily for rest of April and most of may. I don't see how they can possibly do 4 daily on this route given the competition, but we will see if there is any further cuts here. They also cut back bos lax to once daily on some December days. These are really competitive routes.

Why is it everytime DL drops a flight or two at SEA, people come out of the woodwork predicting doom for the hub? They didn't spend all the $$$ they have to build up SEA to drop it so fast. I doubt they are going anywhere.

Some very close-in and rare cuts on LAX-SBA/SBP...both OO at-risk flights. I keep thinking these will be the next UA LAX routes to get cut if they want to relieve some congestion and open up some times to add some other flights. Looks like the frequency cuts are the PM ones that did not catch many connections besides redeyes, which can easily be pushed through SFO for both cities.

Did we know this one was ending with (apparently) no plans to resume? Southwest seems to largely have its way with the Austin market and summer is a definite travel peak for Seattle, never mind the tech connections and economic factors. Obviously they face competition but that they would bring back seasonal SEA-MKE against competition from Alaska and Delta (mainline) but not SEA-AUS seems odd.

I have a feeling Mexico cuts may be due to the violence spreading to beach destinations. I was in Cabo in June, and three weeks after we were there, people were killed on the exact beach we were on.

I suspect this could have to do with QX's shortages. A check of the route today shows OO operates both legs, and the afternoon flight is due to be handed over to QX in December. That is the flight that is being dropped.

Uh, what? DL actually have added 7 total flights and 4 destinations since the beginning of 2017. You obviously have no clue what you're talking about. Keep in mind MCO is a low yield destination given the stage length. Next time you should ask instead of assuming it's doom and gloom. Sheesh.

AS PDX-SMF FEB 4>2

This shows as going mainline (73G) for FEB. and into MAR 10 or so. I'm assuming temporary QX relief. Back to 4X Q400 after that.

6x daily on SMF-SEA is interesting as I think DL just up'd their game in this market and now last I read AS had added mainline again.

AS has been mainline SEA-SMF since the beginning, back in the '80s.
(Interestingly. SMF-SEA was the MD80 retirement flight, and from what was posted in the Washington State thread, it may also mark the 737-400 retirement flight too, though that is just conjecture on my part.)

PDX-OAK is 73G Dec 1-Mar 10; PDX-SMF is 73G Dec 1-Jan 2 then Feb 1-Mar 10. I think March 10 is just the latest extension of the actual planned flying schedule; I wouldn't read much into the default Q400 schedule after that for either route. Hopefully they'll both stay mainline.

For AS, the 3rd SAN-FAT flight has historically been a mid-day Q400 r/t added during the spring/summer. Looks like they might not have the aircraft available for that flight in March 2018. We'll see if it shows up later in the year...

(I just checked AS's online skeds and that 3rd SAN-FAT (Q400) flight shows up in mid-April.)

With WN cutting MDW-FNT are they completely out of FNT or still have BWI?

WN will be completely out of FNT, BWI was dropped quite awhile ago when they switched most of the flying to MDW.

Thanks! I know that was the lazy way of finding out. Very unfortunate, but not surprising, to see.

Enrilla, thanks for these posts!!!

Surprised to see DCA-PNS going to 2x daily. AA just restarted the route in April, so a second flight is pretty fast.

Overall AA seems to be making a push to grow in PNS. Mainline has returned to DFW-PNS and even CLT-PNS has seen mainline make a return.

Whoa really? I didn't know CLT-PNS sees mainline now? When does that happen and what do they use? A319 would be my guess.

Looks like the increase to 3 flights (from 2) for DEN-SBA comes at the expense of mainline service on the route.

Nice to see IAD (and DAY!) get a few adds.

I agree, It's good to see this increase. The only way for UA to expand the IAD hub as a whole is with more domestic feed.

Are these increases from the dummy schedule or adds from recent cuts?

Sure :)

I think I saw a thread about just FNT.

That looks to me a like one whole airplane added. I have to wonder if it is an operationally driven move. For example, a plane isn't going to be in maintenance when originally expected, or a lease was extended.

Agree this is interesting: I flew this with US back in Fall '09 and assumed it was still around. Does anyone know when US/AA suspended the route? Crazy how AA went from no presence in PWM to having mainline and CR9 services.
