Approximately AUG2018. That's around when the first 2 BNE based 789s will be delivered.

Dubbo Regional Airport continues to deliver

"Annual passenger numbers climbed in 2004/2005 to 148,000 and the significant growth has continued with over 217,500 passengers flying in and out of Dubbo in 2016/2017.

The Runway Strengthening and Lighting Upgrade under way will strengthen the runway surface so that it is suitable for Qantas Q400 aircraft and others in that size and weight category."

JETGO Australia whisks up Wollongong route offerings

"JETGO Australia has introduced the airport of Wollongong (WOL) to its network this week, beginning 11 times weekly flights from Melbourne Essendon (MEB) and a daily connection from Brisbane (BNE) on 30 October.

JETGO Australia are also considering other routes. They’ve talked about the Gold Coast and about going to other areas.

Both 634- and 826-kilometre routes launched by the carrier this week will be flown on its fleet of ERJ 135s when referring to OAG schedule, with neither link facing direct competition."

Hedland agrees to airport cost relief

"Port Hedland International Airport has become the second WA airport to reduce airport passenger charges.

Qantas has been publicly urging airport operators to reduce charges since it announced its one-year discounted flight trial for residents of several towns, including Karratha, Hedland, Newman and Paraburdoo, in September.

It follows in the footsteps of Kalgoorlie Airport which announced a reduction in passenger charges in September this year."

Potentially.

According to an article in the Canberra Times today, it could just be attributable to "falling profits and passenger demand."

Has anyone used Qantas' wi-fi product as yet and have any feedback? To date I haven't had a wi-fi enabled B737 when I've flown with QF, so was curious to find out how it stacks up? I've also heard that it is strictly only available currently on domestic routes within Australia.

Looking at the poster, is CMB-MEL daily from the get-go? That's ambitious.

Looks like the 787 just did a ring around Perth's CBD before heading East.

Yes, it's running daily. It's mainly to optimise the connecting traffic onwards to India and Maldives as well as capture the large VFR/O&D traffic and growing tourist/leisure numbers between Australia and Sri Lanka.

Tianjin Airlines is looking to start services to Brisbane with the airline applying to the CAAC for twice weekly services between Chongqing and Brisbane from October next year.

That is fantastic news - just when we think that we have seen the last for route development news for the year, more news keeps coming out.

This week has also seen some interesting developments in respect of SYD:

- UL is considering re-launching CMB - SYD flights - I cannot post a link, as it is on 'The Australian,' behind a pay-wall

- TG is increasing capacity to SYD, replacing 11x weekly 747-400s with 14x weekly A350-900s (an increase of 7% in seat capacity)

It is interesting that TG is finally dropping F seating from SYD (and therefore, Australasia) - the A350 C seating is a substantial upgrade, though.

See: https://blueswandaily.com/thai-airways- ... in-1h2018/.

^ Hey hey, thanks for that - I have two TG flights in 2018. With any luck I'll get to have probably my last ever 747 flight in January then get to enjoy the A350 in April. Although I wouldn't turn my nose up at two 747 flights. :-)

Interesting "capacity increase" SYD - BKK though - total seats increase by ~215 per week but J decreases by ~100. And F is no more as you point out.

Around 13% increase in Y seats is not what this route needs, given the EK A380 and the QF A330 also on the route. I suppose TG have to cater for the J they know they require, then try to fill the back of the plane.

Edit: TG have two versions of their 744. If it's the other version coming down here now, then the A359 swap means a very slight bump (~8) in J seats.
- for an overall increase of ~369 weekly seats.

Ah, if I had only read the article, they had already done the math. TG currently fly the "other" 744 BKK-SYD.

So 243 additional weekly seats with the A350 swap.
+ 8 J
+ 345 Y
- 110 F

On a route that appears to see perpetual discounting by EK and TG, 345 additional Y seats will be interesting.

Hey that's pretty cool. China-BNE market is growing pretty fast. In just the last year or two China Eastern and Hainan have started, with Air China starting in Decemeber and Tianjin looking into services there.

Was fortunate enough to be on 1 of mainy trial flights and can say the product is excellent. My understanding the wifi stick to the East-West flying & high spec routes such as ASP, DRW etc.

Finally SYD will have their 1st scheduled A350 carrier. On the same note this will mean QF to become the sole B747 passenger service carrier at SYD. (Hopefully Korean will keep the torch alight with their seasonal B748i services).

Congratulations on getting a picture of Kumar Sangakkara into this thread. (And Mahela Jayawardene, I think).

It's quite apt really, as Aussies tend to think of Adam Gilchrist as the greatest batsman-keeper of all time, even though Sanga was actually better in both respects.

So using him to spruik an Australia to Sri Lanka airline route is actually a stroke of true genius.

On a more sober note, I presume that the Melbourne-Colombo route will be a mixture of VFR and of package tourists to the Maldives.

QCCA MEL, QCCUK and eventually QAL/QCCA BNE. I believe also a domestic mixture of workgroups for MEL-PER-MEL.

Cheers, appreciate it. When you say QAL/QAAC BNE is that just because it isn’t yet clear whether QAAC will open a BNE base, or is there actually a decent chance QAL will get to fly the 787?

I think it’s all a bit more mixed now, less fleet based and more A/B pay scales;

I believe the international fleets are now split - 789/380, 744/330 & 744/330/380/738

789/380 -QCUK, QCCA and QAL who have transferred and accepted some not all QCCA conditions.

744/330 - QAL, QCCA new hires.

744/330/380/738 - Jetconnect NZ, not sure if they will be 789 trained.

So crews are mixed all over the place, I’d imagine common to have QAL/QCCA/Jetconnect or QCUK all on the same aircraft.

Isn't Korean flying seasonal A380's now? There's simply too much demand from Korea.

EY has put the 77L into the MEL route on an ad how basis, but this is certainly interesting considering the amount of capacity they have removed from here recently.

The reality is that EY’s reputation in the industry seems to have taken a battering. It’s once highly regarded premium product has been watered down over time, taking with it some of its customer base. The reality is that I do know a couple of corporate travel agents that now steer their customers in other directions.

On another note though, the MEL-Europe market is certainly experiencing a few changes lately.

These are:
- EY’s downguages
- EK’s upgrade to an a380 on all 3 services in March 2018
- QF ceasing their MEL-DXB-LHR services in March 2018. Replaces by MEL-PER-LHR 789 and also a move to double daily MEL-SIN (including 1 x a380) to connect into services in SIN.
- QR’s upgauge

Seems to be an interesting time, with most of the love currently being focused on SYD.

KE operated the B748i during this years seasonal upgrades & only switched to the A380 end of Oct. Was speaking generally of passenger B747 services hopefully KE will continue the trend of sending their B748i & A380 otherwise QF will be last man standing once TG switch to A350’s.

Your right, EY had a one-off due to a marketing campaign when they unveiled the revised livery. The carrier has certainly slipped whilst EK & especially QR gaining traction (even with the airspace bans in place).

The ME3 will be interesting bunch to monitor the next 12-18 months with the capacity reshuffles.

... And Qatar is gaining some important attention in Canberra with the start of flights there only months away now. A smart move? Mightn't be very financially rewarding for QR but the move to start Canberra has garnered some important attention from the 'hipsters' and 'movers and shakers' in our nation's capital. Just like Singapore Airlines did a year ago! Only Qatar as a nation needs that attention arguably more so than the nation of Singapore does.
To me, Etihad definitely does seem to be on the decline. The launch of The Residence may well have been their high water mark. I always ranked them above Emirates and Qatar but now the latter seems to be out-manoeuvring the other two.

Little bit of random news but Emirates is ending its naming rights deal with the Melbourne Cup. No new announcements during speech.

Even though it might not be financial viable to op via CBR it has allowed QR to increase capacity bypassing the bilateral rules. Once they are granted rights to increase services CBR will without a doubt be dropped unless they opt to serve BNE.

I’ve always regarded EY prestige carrier whilst EK quantity not quality carrier. Then EY began acquiring carriers which quickly panned out to a complete failure.

Hey mate, a good catch!
i wonder if any other naming rights may be dropped by the belt-tightening ME3?
I heard that Turkish Airlines may be sniffing around to land a significant naming rights 'thingy' next year!
I remember when Northwest Airlines was a sponsor of the Rabbitohs to publicise their launch in Australia! And if I am not mistaken, didn't Etihad get naming rights for a certain stadium in Melbourne BEFORE they had launched flights there?

Has anyone flown on the QF789 yet? Be keen to hear reviews on a normal standard flight not a delivery flight. When is from two due?

Qatar was looking to expand Australian sponsorships not sure the Qatar Melbourne Cup or Turkish Melbourne Cup work thought. Saw footage of Alan Joyce and the VRC chairman talking in footage from today, maybe we can have a Qantas Melbourne Cup

Hobart airport is closed due to a helicopter crash. One confirmed fatality and another in a serious condition.

The airport could be closed until tomorrow.

I flew through SYD last night on QF, and noticed that a lot of the old QF branding is still yet to be updated - this particularly struck me on the screens throughout the terminal (like at boarding gates), which should have been easy to re-program, from day one.

I wonder what is taking QF so long with the re-brand, which was first announced over a year ago.

Has anyone else noticed this too, at other airports?

Yes that's the current Etihad Stadium (called Telstra Dome beforehand). Per Wiki (I know it's not the best source), the name change occured on 1 Mar 2009 and should last till 2019. However there could be the possibility that EY sells the naming right just like what Telstra did beforehand.

Don’t travel through Melbourne Airport then! QF domestic is in parts two brands behind ans the 90s one still is on the front of the terminal - I suppose they are waiting for the lease to go back to Melbourne a airport for some basic renovations? Otherwise lazy?

Digital signage at airports can be surprisingly hard to change, it’s linked with Airport management at systems, and in typical Australian Airport fashion many are very old and daisy chained to numerous systems- with no complete solutions. Perhaps this is it? Or again lack of attention to detail?

You are, of course, exactly right that CBR was a neat way of increasing SYD to double daily (although, technically, within the bilateral, not bypassing it). I'm pretty certain their plan with any increase in bilateral capacity is still to commence BNE (I believe they're champing at the bit for that route), so CBR will very likely remain in order to keep SYD at double daily.

On EY, my personal opinion was always that The Residence was an ego decision, not a true business decision. I never expected it to go down well in the market outside of the richest families in the Middle East - at a time when most airlines are either removing F altogether, or reducing it significantly. SQ's new A380 F suites are a good solution in today's market, IMHO, not something like The Residence.
