FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way.

It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1.

Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over

year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not

appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Nice to see Frontier adding the new flights at ISP! But what's VR? You said they're closing PVD.

TACV Cabo Verde Airlines (http://flytacv.com). Looks like they currently run 1-2x/week PVD-RAI on a B757.

VR is TACV Cabo Verde Airlines, existing to serve the Cape Verde diaspora living in the Boston CSA.

Is VR moving operations back to BOS?

More AA SJU cuts. Will be interesting to see how they use the 330's. SJU averaged 2-3 330's a day in the winter and up to 4 on Saturdays.

MCO is not surprising. Before the WN/FL merger they had a total of something like 6-8 flights PHL-MCO. Now with just WN it hovers somewhere between 3-5. AA has added some winter capacity by way of upgauges and there are 2 NK flights. Without seeing the numbers I'd guess PHL-MCO capacity is flat or up slightly over the past 10 years.

VR could be a misfile, they have had higher loads, higher fares and lower costs than when they were at BOS, I believe they were over 95% loads westbound based on the july stats.

They have misfiled before (they once loaded PVD-SID), the only way I could see them back at BOS is if BOS really wants to boast Africa service and gives them an incentive, in which case they will be back at PVD before too long between.

This is YOY because when they pull something you don't know if it was a seasonal cut or not.

AAG adding CA-PHX is no surprise of course and was expected any time now; seeing Sky Harbor added from 3 or 4 cities in the Golden State will prolly be the case when the dust settles.

The surprise to me is this route has not been announced yet! The service actually starts on Feb 20, and is op'd with 737s.(not EMJs,,, or AirBi.) This is the first new route added by AAG in 6 months even though, as I said, it hasn't even been officially announced yet.

I wonder if we will finally be seeing some more new routes rolled out by AAG for 2018 now?! (With maybe a big announcement coming soon!?)

Regarding F9, that's a lot of changes -- mostly cuts -- at MCO. Two roués seem to be gone completely -- SAN/SFO-MCO. That makes F9 the first carrier to blink in the SAN-MCO market, a route that today has 3 cx flying it nonstop. (F9 flew the e/b as a red-eye that started a couple of years ago and has flown daily ever since.

Yeah, I don't get the switch, SFO was at 90%+ loads with daily service. There is competition with UA and DL on the route, but I find it hard to believe SJC is going to do better. CVG-SJC never seemed to do very well even in the DL hub days, with a 738/752, loads were routinely in the 30-70% range. I guess we will see...

I believe these cuts are to make room for the new flying coming online at around the same time.

Watch G4 for new routes either this week, or Nov, they usually trim a lot of routes right before a big schedule release....(check the OAG thread from 06/18/17)

They Cut MIA-HAV because they said they wanted an extra STL-DEN flight in a news report but now they cut that too? This constant adding and chopping of unexpected routes after just a single season of flying is not going to win over customers in the long run.

It’s a smart addition. After US left *A I always felt like UA didn’t have enough capacity on SFO-PHX. AS could do well on the SFO point of sale side.

Haha can’t I just be petty in piece :)

I actually don’t mind F9s route strategy too much, because at least it makes room for more reliable carriers to enter the markets they leave open.

For VR I hope its not related to the FI partnership. VR has done better at PVD than they did at BOS, but with FI calling some shots hopefully they don't try and consolidate for the sake of crews. It would probably be cheaper for them to shuttle a crew to PVD on their layover than switch back to BOS.

Well, if it takes F9 trailblazing for them, that's not a ringing endorsement of their business plan.

Pretty big hole in the VX/AS network they should serve anyways...especially since it can't be codeshared on with AA.

VR is the IATA code FOR TACV. Their only 757, which they run all long segments including the transatlantic to Providence was out of action starting in Sept. They have been operating their flights with a chartered 763 the last few weeks which is possibly the way it will stay.

Looks like it is scheduled on a 767 until Nov 8, when it switches back to a 757. I bet they just have not extended the 767 change, but they are still using the VR code for these schedule filings with the chartered 767.

I don't think Frontier is looking for constancy of customers. They're a bottom feeder and a very successful one.

Thanks as always enilria!!!

Surprised there's a cut with BOS-AUA since there's no SXM for the season and highly likely chance of future cuts to SJU. Also surprised they haven't tried to increase NAS/CUN/PUJ in light of this.

Are there Tier 1 Frequencies (PEK/PVG/CAN) now up for grabs for Chinese based carriers. Wouldn't MU or CA be better off finding something unserved?

For VR I hope its not related to the FI partnership. VR has done better at PVD than they did at BOS, but with FI calling some shots hopefully they don't try and consolidate for the sake of crews. It would probably be cheaper for them to shuttle a crew to PVD on their layover than switch back to BOS.

I wonder if the switch to SID is still on. Seems like FI group wants VR to do this. https://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news ... cape-verde

Is it possible there may be some cooperation with S4 as well in PVD with their entry into RAI?

Right now the intent is to serve the market for Cactus League Spring Training games (AS is the official airline of the San Francisco Giants) but may become regular service if it performs well.

AS press release on the aforementioned SFO-PHX seasonal service:

https://newsroom.alaskaair.com/2017-09- ... sco-Giants

Alaska will launch a seasonal, twice daily flight from San Francisco to Phoenix, Arizona for Giants fans to attend Spring Training in 2018. The flight schedule is being finalized and tickets will go on sale later this year.

Does F9 already serve PVD? Those are significant adds if they don't.

Yes, they already operate flights from PVD to Orlando, Tampa, Denver, Fort Myers, Miami, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and New Orleans. Enilria put YOY changes, nothing on there has not already been announced.

The reductions were largely unknown I do believe.

Looks like OAK could see more flying announced, http://www.standard.net/Transportation/ ... ng-flights

"flights to Oakland, California, are tentatively set to begin sometime in the first quarter of 2018" I assume the Ogden-Oakland announcement would coincide with a larger system-wide announcement.

Yeah, the reductions were all new, but all the increases such as at PVD were already announced (and some have already started).

I find it interesting that UA is adding more flights between ORD and ABQ. I wonder if UA and AA are putting pressure on WN. WN has been reducing their flights between MDW and ABQ recently.

All the F9 reductions here make sense in order to have enough aircraft to operate all the recently announced routes.

Just looked at fares online AS.com & $399 Y & 499 F are the only rates showing. I expect those will adjust? Since you can fly SFO-PDX for under $100 r/t.

Interesting changes at UA. CLE-SJU finally bit the dust. They are also starting EWR-HAM in April. Earlier than in May clearly.
BQN being reduced. More Puerto Rico cuts.

I actually don’t mind F9s route strategy too much, because at least it makes room for more reliable carriers to enter the markets they leave open.

Well, if it takes F9 trailblazing for them, that's not a ringing endorsement of their business plan.

Are you referring to a specific carrier? I wasn’t...

My "them" referred to your "more reliable carriers".

CLE-SJU is likely being cut moreso because of Maria than the focus city drawdown so I do wonder if it will return if things stabilize. There's no other carrier on this route and there is pretty decent PR diaspora in Cleveland compared to other Midwest markets. We'll see.
