Southwest and the 787 or 797?

Mon Oct 16, 2017 5:03 am

Tried looking through the threads in case it was discussed exclusively..but.. in the future (long term or short term) do you see Southwest ever ordering another fleet type? Maybe support farther international destinations etc? I think the 797 might be a step forward without going to crazy. I know their economics of the 737 have kept them quite profitable.

Seems extremely unlikely as they've been happy and exceedingly profitable with their current, limiting philosophy. As long as they are content being a big fish in (to this point) the biggest pond, without visiting the "outside world", I can't see it happening.

Oh, and heaven forbid they're talking to Boeing about the 797. 737 cockpit, anyone?

The inevitable fact is that eventually the 737 will need to be completely replaced. And Airbus would love to have WN's post 737 order. Boeing would not be so stupid to let that happen, much else all of the other 737 customers. The 797 will have to replace the 737 and somewhat the 757 too.

AS has already expressed interest in the Boeing MoM. I bet they will be a launch customer & I'd expect every 737 operator to take a look, but not the 787, that's too big for WN or AS.

Definitely could see them becoming a 797 customer...especially if they want to go to Europe down the road besides from just BWI and deeper into South America than the MAX can go. Not sure they need to be a launch customer for 2025 as I think they will still be busy expanding their network with the MAX as they still have quite a few places they can add and at the current pace they won't be done by 2025. Having an endorsement from a customer like Southwest would be huge for the model launch for Boeing.

Isn't Southwest one of Boeing's "go to" entities when it comes to discussions and ideas related to the development of the 737?

I thought the 797 was meant to be a TRUE 757 replacement (as opposed to attempting to further stretch the 737/A321) rather than a 737 replacement (which seems odd since they're starting a whole new line of 737s with the MAX). Yeah the 737 line will eventually close down for good (and WN will eventually need replacements) but assuming they don't push the 737 design even further, that's at least 20-25 years down the road. How far in advance do you expect these airlines and Boeing to be planning?

heya, whoa now. It's called "Middle of Market" for a reason - ie, in between 737 and 787. Its not meant to, nor will it replace 737.
Boeing will have to clean sheet a replacement for Ms Durable on the next go around, but 797 ain't it!
Having said that, maybe Boeing shocks us all with a dual platform roll out, ala 757/767 , but that seems extraordinarily unlikely.

If this 797 everyone is speaking of is Boeing's 737 replacement, good chance WN will go with it. The topic of the 737 being old has been beat to death on here. Its not a 737-100 anymore folks. I think in 15-20 years if Boeing even further morphed/advanced the 737 into a whole new lineup with further sophisticated tech and materials, the next gen of engines, and 787 style wings with a few aerodynamic tweaks here and there, I bet airlines around the world will still be buying 'em up. Shes here to stay for a while.

I for one hope that Southwest is not involved *at all* with the development of the 797. The 737NG could have been much, much more advanced (e.g. 777) than it ended up being, were it not for WN and their backwards thinking in the cockpit.

Be funny if WN ends up going smaller before it goes bigger.

Just IMAGINE if BBD/Airbus could score a C-Series order with WN.......... :spin:

They would most certainly attack that space like the US3 do, with subsidiaries. Their mainline costs are to prohibitive below 143 seats. I would think just as likely would be in house 787s to go long haul before going smaller short haul. But either would be cool to see.

Like said above, MoM might be their move, for us Aviation enthusiasts, probably not anytime tho.

IINM their current contract doesn't allow for such. Of course, that could change, but still.

You are correct. I think structurally a lot would have to change for WN to not fly the 737.

But would be cool to see!
