Azul sells 10 ATR-72-600s

Fri Oct 13, 2017 9:34 pm

Azul is divesting of 10 ATR-72-600 from its fleet and selling them to NAC - Nordic Aviation Capital. Five will leave the fleet before this year's end and the remaining five will leave over the first half of 2018. The agreement also includes leasing 3 new ATR-72-600s, to be delivered in 2018. Azul currently operates 40 ATR-72s, so after these changes the airline will have 33 of the turboprops in the fleet.

Azul says this is part of their plan to optimize its fleet and growth; it also reduces its total debt load to the tune of R$ 325 million (US$ 102.5 million).

Will NAC operate these 10 ATR's themselves or offer them for lease to other airlines? What's the logic or advantage of selling practically new ATR72-600's for the same type but fresh from the manufacturer? Is the saving purely a reduced fleet of the ATR? I thought that leasing a brand new aircraft is more expensive over time compared to buying a brand new aircraft(?) I'm sure I'm missing something here(?)

NAC is a leasing company, not an airline. They will simply lease or sell these frames out elsewhere. Sometimes it works out cheaper to lease something rather than to buy it outright. Less upfront cash to spend. A practice that's very common in the US with cars for example. Plus Azul would have had some cash in hand from the sale of these 10 frames.

Azul wants to reduce its debt foremost, and also at the same time get rid of some of its smaller planes at a time when the Brazilian economy is picking up. Some of those routes where the ATRs fly on can be flown by the EJets at a time when domestic demand is improving, Azul has a good number if E2 jets on order that could do that job.

Will this impact Azul's plans to develop an Uruguay airline with AT7?

Don't think so. The Azul Uruguay planes were, IIRC, coming from Toulouse. The ones being sold have been in service in Brazil for a while now.
