airBaltic grounds CSeries fleet

Wed Oct 11, 2017 6:18 pm

Due to issues related to the PW1500G powerplant, airBaltic has temporary grounded its entire CS300 fleet.

Latvian carrier Air Baltic is temporarily grounding its entire fleet of Bombardier CSeries jets pending technical checks on the engines.

The carrier tells FlightGlobal that it has issued a "temporary suspension" of CS300 flight operations pending inspections on an "external engine accessory".

Well I guess that answers the often asked question about whether PW's GTF issues affect the C series.

FWIW, Flightradar24 shows two Swiss CS300 currently in the air, HB-JCC and HB-JCE

Interesting that the CS300 fleet is grounded for "safety reasons". That didn't happen on the A320neo.

Right now none of LX's CS300 flights tomorrow are showing as cancelled, they are scheduled to be (first departure of the day for each aircraft):

HB-JCA - LX2800 ZRH-GVA
HB-JCB - LX1472 GVA-PRG
HB-JCC - LX2104 GVA-AGP
HB-JCE - LX352 GVA-LHR

There are no directives on the EASA or BAZL sites. The HB-JC* ships seem to perform quite normal.

Maybe it's jus a minor problem BT can't solve fast enough. Remember, they are just a modern skeleton company that has outsourced almost everything.

Hopefully these troughs for this great aircraft will make its ascent even greater!

Bombardier's asking price just went a lot lower.

No, let's use Commerce Dept logic. If this is something that costs BBD a billion dollars to fix, BBD is required to charge Delta $13.3 million *more* for each of the 75 frames on order, because every dollar of program cost has to be apportioned into that sales price.

I should have been clearer with my snarky comment. I meant the price of the company, not the plane.

RR should get into the narrow body market as GE and PW are fairly unreliable producers

All of you are nuts.
It's with an engine ACCESSORY.
So that means it's limited to things like IDG, hydraulic pumps, fuel pumps, EEC alternators.
Many of these devices are SHARED across manufacturers, so it's not like this is necessarily Pratt's issue to resolve in the first place.
AND it could extend to other engines on other aircraft, if it's a "parts bin" type of thing.

So everyone calm down and stop dog-piling the BS on Pratt.
At least, this time. They've got enough legitimate issues to deal with without the a.net peanut gallery creating more!

I would respectfully disagree. Pratt deliver a complete engine to Bombardier. They are responsible towards Bombardier to get this fixed. No doubt they will have to do so in close cooperation with their subcontractor(s), and probably the subcontractor(s) will be wholly or partially responsible for covering the expense. But Pratt bears full responsibilty towards Bombardier. Quality control is a bitch.

Say for arguments sake you have one of the cars that has been affected by the airbag problems and you go to your dealer to sort it out. Do you think they can get away by saying: "not our problem, here's the phone number for Takata (the airbag subcontractor), good luck with them".

Seems to be only a minor problem, fleet grounded overnight, while checks are done, and planes are expected to be back in service tomorrow October 12th

Is it? flight radar has it as heavily delayed with the follow on flight cancelled...

edit: https://www.flightglobal.com/news/artic ... et-442096/

The carrier tells FlightGlobal that it has issued a "temporary suspension" of CS300 flight operations pending inspections on an "external engine accessory".

Air Baltic has not elaborated on the specific nature of the checks or the components involved.

But it says it is "working closely" with Pratt & Whitney on the issue and is "anticipating" restoration of CS300 services on 12 October.

It's definitely in flight to GVA now. The next CS300 departure is to GVA in an hour.

Perhaps it's coincidence or done on purpose, but funny to see BT dispatching CS300's to 2 airports that are incredibly familiar with the type.

There are two Air Baltic CS300 in the air at the moment. Looks like they are progressively returned to flight after checkup

As written in the flight global article, they expected return today, so the gradual return makes sense.

My RIX-LGW flight last Friday (Oct 6) was changed to a 733 at the last minute.

Hope they sort it out quickly, it's excellent aircraft overall from a passenger perspective and Air Baltic appear to love it.

Actually, five of the seven flew today.
YL-CSA: enroute to TLV now
YL-CSC: RIX-MAD, MAD-RIX, RIX-HEL
YL-CSD: RIX-FRA, FRA-RIX
YL-CSF: RIX-GVA, GVA-RIX, RIX-CPH, CPH-RIX
YL-CSG: RIX-SVO

Indeed, based on first flight times today it appears checks were required on every aircraft.

All seven airBaltic CS300s are flying today. That includes YL-CSE that hadn't flown in a week. So I assume all is now well.

That is good news. Any idea if Swiss's CS300's were affected? None of their flights appear to have been cancelled.

Filter or fuel supplier? I've seen both. One mechanic was particularly gifted at incorrectly installing oil filters and almost caused a crash. If someone was not properly installing fuel filters... To improperly install filters takes strength and a will to not notice the error.

Since there was no change to any of the SWISS CSeries flying this week, I'm guessing it was an issue at airBaltic with their procedures, their maintenance, or their suppliers. SWISS appears to not have been affected.

Good on air Baltic to recognize the problem, address it, and minimize any lengthy operating delays.
