LH introduces revised livery

Mon Oct 02, 2017 10:07 pm

A user on german airliners.de suggests that LH will introduce a revised livery in 2018.
(http://forum.airliners.de/topic/45349-a ... ent-780581)

Thoughts? What do you expect from LH?

Didn't see anything that you mentioned in the thread (though I don't read German so that may not help). Could you please provide some pics here?

Hopefully, Lufthansa will retain their livery IMO. The Corporate ID is a masterpiece and needs no change.

Some years back A380 promo impression showing white engine nacelles give it a cleaner look.

You mean the retro livery is being rolled out to the entire fleet? ;)

But seriously; unless we can find some more sources, I'd be a little hesitant to believe this. The first A350s have already been delivered with the current livery. Seems like they might have introduced a new livery with a new aircraft type - though I could be wrong of course.

Hope they can bring a wavy line between white & grey, same style as KLM or UA B787.

My only hope is that the new or revised livery retains the current one's charm. I would have a hard time adjusting to a completely new livery that replaces one that's been around for so long.

I knew this day would come.
I really like their current scheme and IMHO there's no need to change. It's still classy after all those years!

I hope they change to something good, but I fear they might get rid of the grey belly and engines... and that's all. Ultra boring.

I hope its just a slight tweak, that livery seems timeless. Simple and modern after multiple decades.

Hey guys,
Keep the font, keep the tail design, maybe enlarged or chopped off like Turkish and Tarom .... And then:

.... Introduce a blue cheat line from underneath slightly enlarged titles .... With the cheat line expanding downwards as it approaches the rear fuselage and introducing a yellow portion that expands with it ... And the blue and yellow wrap around the rear fuselage ....

Or
.... Same cheat line arrangement but it expands upwards as it approaches the rear fuselage and blends in with the leading edge 'angle' of the tail.... And the yellow portion is also introduced to wrap around the upper rear fuselage ahead of the tail....
I have in my collection of aircraft models a Lufthansa 737-200 in an experimental yellow and white scheme. It looks awesome! Even that would be better than the bland current scheme. It may be a classic, but it needs a Qantas/Air France style tweak... A word of caution to the crane however, look out! If Qantas can chop off the arms of the roo, I guess Lufthansa could chop off the crane's wings!
Cheers
Bunumuring.

Say it ain't so. I love how LH's livery is so practical and straight forward with such an iconic logo. How quintessentially German!

IF they do anything so dramatic with rebranding themselves, I pray they don't do anything as dramatic as AA.

There’s a highly recommendable book about Lufthansa and its design history from the 60’s until today. It shows the development of the Lufthansa brand design from boarding pass design to aircraft livery and its changes over the years. After reading this it becomes pretty clear how much thought is put into LH’s design.

There's nothing really to change. No need to change the logo or the font. Maybe a KLM like refresh, but that's about it. KLM has had their logo for years.

The billboard one doesn't work.

The last one with the yellow engines reminds me of Icelandair, or an orca with the waves on the fuselage.

Here's my take on those three linked.

#1 - Pretty clearly the best of the three. Not sure about the straight line separating the blue from the yellow tailcone. Either make it an aft rising swoop to be consistent with the rest of the livery or ditch the yellow tailcone altogether. The titles below the window line looks unique kind of reminds me of the old 80s AN livery on the 737/767, my only concern from a branding point of view it is probably too inconspicuous compared to the traditional position. Lastly on the tail I'd keep the current yellow disc/blue crane rather than reversing it. But all in all not a bad design.

#2 - NO WAY!!! Looks very cheap would suit a LCC/Holiday charter outfit though. It would also date very quickly.

#3 - Not as bad as #2. But even today it looks something from 10-15 years ago. Reminds me of the old c. 2000 Lanchile livery before they become LAN.

Out of the three #1 by a (nautical) mile!

Thanks for sharing your information! I can only recommend this book too! The update in 1988/89 was a good one to ensure a timeless design for the future. No longer a black nose, no cheatline, a "warmer yellow"etc.. It´s amazing, how the design team went into the smallest details. For example, they used the "Helvetica" font but altered the "L" in the interest of a nicer appearance and retained very strict guidelines how to use the logo, the brand image and so on.

I tend to say that some of the newer liveries show that the designers are no longer able to keep an eye on such details and the results would have been only drafts of former designers. It´s not the fault of the designers of today. It´s like asking a modern film maker with a modern actress and a composer to do an opening scene for "Breakfast at Tiffany's". The result won´t be the one we know (and there were many negative comments on the result but in later years "experts" discovered the fantastic result) and we "can´t expect" such work because times changed.

Regards!

I hope they pull an Air Canada and not an Iberia...or a JAL. I won't be fond of anything that ditches the crane or makes it way too abstract. The logo fine the way it is.

Unfortunately I feel like the only likely "modern" revise is to make it too simplified and bland, although perhaps they could make the titles large and across the fuselage, and make the blue tail extend to the bottom of the fuselage?

C'mon Lufthansa, lead the world with corporate branding just like you lead in engineering! (sorry if that's a bold statement)

Coming back to the OP's link:

nothing there really indicates a livery change (and by the way: please no more wavy liveries!). The discussion is about the IL check of an A380 in DRS. Other posters are asking if the plane can be painted in DRS, and the answer is no. Then somebody asks when a painting hangar can be expected in DRS, and somebody says "next year".

So, the timeframe "next year" refers to the new hangar, not a new livery! (At least in the discussion in the link)

Different strokes for different folks my friend. Personally, I think the 'random wavy line' craze is awful. I think KLM have made, what was a fantastic refresh of an iconic livery, look cheap by adding the wave/curve. It reminds me of TUI. It's too contemporary and too "hipster-ish". I think the wavy line liveries will date quickly.

Am not too fond of the negative space logos either. If you have a classic logo like LH does, please don't decapitate it! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Just my 2c.

Hey mate,
I will second that. In my opinion, Singapore Airlines need an updated livery more than Lufthansa. Maybe they will introduce a new/revised livery with the introduction of their new batch of A380s? Doubt it though.

I hope they don't mess with their timeless and universally recognized design graphics....

On a side note I am a strong detractor of the KLM wavy line. They've ruined a perfectly executed design. It does nothing to enhance the design flow of the fuselage. It now looks generic and cheaper and I am sure this wavy-line thing will date quickly.

I think Lufthansa's livery is one of the most clean and professional ones around. If they change it I hope they do something subtle and don't use any gimmicky waves or extraneous colours (I could see a nice livery based around the colours of the German flag, but it would clash horribly with their shade of blue, IMO) and keep the typeface.
I'd be surprised if they do alter it, though.

I think the KLM livery really depends on which plane it is applied to. It looks great on the 787/737/Fokker 70, alright on The E175/190 and pretty awkward on the 777 and 747.

LH's livery is Eurowhite yet for many folks it's ok if they go this route.

I could dig a change from white fuselage to silverish grey like NW had. Picture their planes but with a blue tail instead of read. Now that'd be a nice sight, without being a major change to their "timeless brand".
