Next in line with the "hip" airlines trend.. "Swoop"

Wed Sep 27, 2017 10:49 am

Westjet, the canadian LCC has announced that the LCC subsidary will be named swoop, starting with 10 73H's.
Based from calgary, it will offer ULCC style service with extra's suchs as bags, food, flexibility and other extra's for a extra fee.

Can we please stop with these stupid names we see popping up lately, purely designed by branding agents to sound "hip".
Level, Joon, Swoop, we've had these generic names already in the time of Ted and Song..and it didn't work.

Story in English:

WestJet today announced the name and logo for its ultra-low-cost airline (ULCC) in Canada. Named Swoop, the ULCC will begin selling flights in early 2018.

Swoop enters the Canadian ultra-low-cost carrier market. (CNW Group/WestJet)

"The name Swoop denotes exactly what we plan to do," said Bob Cummings WestJet Executive Vice-President, Strategy and the executive member responsible for the launch of Swoop. "It's a powerful verb that demonstrates we plan to swoop in to the Canadian market with a new business model that will provide lower fares and greater opportunity for more Canadians to travel."

This is an atrociously bad airline name. They might as well call it "money shot airlines."

Just as well they aren't using this name for flights to the UK. Swoop was a popular UK brand of packet food for wild birds. Imagine all those birds coming up to the plane for a snack. Could get expensive on engine rebuilds.

The funny part is that WS does not have too many extras included anyway. Food is BOB, seat selection and checked luggage is for a fee on lower fares.

At least Swoop is still an aviation/flight/bird related word. Some others aren't. I'm surprised now that SIA went for Scoot when Swoop wasn't in use yet...

Why not call a Canadian ULCC "Can_do"?

Then base fares can be called No Can Do and full fares can be called We Can Do...

I actually like the livery...
I do agree that these ULCC spin off airline names are getting out of hand. Jump, Scoot, Joon, LEVEL, now Swoop. It's fun to say, but it sounds weird for an airline name.

There is no airline named Jump. The LH Jump Project is just your standard LH A340-300s, operated by LH CityLine crews (cheaper), with more Economy, less Business and no First Class seats. Their version of an longhaul LCC for touristy destinations. But it operates as LH.

For the full charter / holiday / sun destinations they have EuroWings, operated under the own brand EW.

We already have an " UP " - El Al's LCC offshoot. But now we have an LCC of an LCC - the race to the bottom just continues.

No way. It definitely just happened to work out like that. There are only even .001% of people who even recognize LEBL vs BCN. Level is just a term sometimes used in aviation and it's vague enough to work for their branding. I would be floored if it ever came out that was even brought up for a millisecond in the room when they were naming the "airline"

Why? Airlines are all about getting bums on seats, and it's marketing which makes that happen. If you can gain some form of advantage from a name, as a business why wouldn't you do this?

Also think about Hop!, Vueling and Nok - customer awareness isn't exactly failing for them.

Here in the Netherlands Swoop is the name of a store that sells refurbished iPhones and iPads. That's the first thing I thought of when I heard this name. I wonder if there can be a conflict between the airline and the store for using the same name.

LOL...and the logo could be the poop emoji. In fact a "clean" Eurowhite livery would be a disgrace to poop.

Swoop - that'll be easy for Canada's 8 million francophones to pronounce.

Other than union-busting, starting everyone at year 1 on the pay scale and discouraging real competition, what does this offer WS that mainline can't? I guess that's where the costs savings come in.

I hate the name - it's atrocious and I feel almost underestimates the intelligence level of the market. I love the livery though - that is a work of art IMO. I've said it multiple times but I don't understand this move unless significant changes are made to WS itself to cement it as a full-service carrier. And if that's going to happen, it should start with the TATL flights - full-service, complimentary food and drinks, and free baggage allowance. Then move that to flights of 2.5 hours or more, while ALL routes will go WN and allow 1 or 2 free bags and then bam you have a product difference. Otherwise you have two LCCs because WS will nickel and dime as much as Swoop. Do I disagree with nickel and diming? No, that's what the market supports, but if that's the case then you don't need 2 carriers to do the same thing.

That’s easy. WestJet’s standard livery.

Sad thing is that this will replace mainline routes just as Rouge has done with AC as they continue to expand, so for us frequent fliers, choice will be slowly eroding away.

Pleased to see the new announcement. I hope they're successful. But I do agree that it's a bit bizarre to pick a name that's very difficult for a quarter of the country's population to pronounce.

Finnair, China Eastern and Iberia all spring to mind and WS itself has always been less than stellar and looks very 90s.

LOL if you want to use the UniTED analogy, Aer Lingus would establish Gus and British Airways could either have Tish or Ways or in reverse they could also have Brit (for Britney...think of the cross-promotional opportunities with Ms. Spears :P). Ways would help to keep things Level within IAG, lol.

Oh yeah the other differential to WS mainline on swoop with be 189Y in the 738 vs. WS' 168. They'll probably be able to maintain the same seat pitch by gone with slimlines on swoop.

Mind you, given current public perceptions of and industrial unrest at BA, maybe 'BAh...' would work best. And my alternative for Aer Lingus... 'AerYeGo'. Oh and I'm sure fellow West of Scotland members might appreciate a GLA based leisure airline called 'Get2'... ;-)

Not yet, none of the the 737-800s have been reconfigured yet. Still at 168. All 737-700s have been reconfigured to 134 however.

Depending on the seats they use, 189 seats in a 738 isn't bad at all. I recently traveled on a Ryanair flight that was fitted with their new slim seats. Was very pleasantly surprised! Felt much more roomy than the new high density BA short haul cabins for example. I'm 6ft 1 for the sake of comparison.

Disagree...any Aer Lingus spin-off should be named Air Fungus. (old nickname for them for those who don't know...started back in the 60's I think)
